Cessna 172 / Skyhawk: Which Year Should You Buy?

The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is the most-produced aircraft in history — north of 44,000 built since 1956 and still rolling off the line in Independence, Kansas today. It earned that crown not by being the fastest or the cheapest, but by being the most forgiving four-seat airplane ever drawn: high wing, tricycle gear, a stall you have to work to make scary, and an airframe that shrugs off decades of student abuse. It first flew in June 1955 as a tricycle-gear evolution of the tailwheel 170, and roughly 1,400 sold in its first year alone.
The airplane evolved in clear, collectible steps. The original fastback straight-tail (1956–59) gave way to the swept tail in 1960 (172A), the wraparound Omni-Vision rear window and one-piece windshield in 1963 (172D), and electrically actuated flaps in 1965 (172F). The pivotal change came in 1968, when Cessna dropped the thirsty six-cylinder Continental O-300 for the four-cylinder Lycoming O-320 (172I) — cheaper to overhaul and the engine family the type still uses. Tubular spring-steel main gear arrived in 1971 (172L), and the drooped-leading-edge 'camber-lift' wing that tamed the low-speed handling came in 1973 (172M).
Then came the horsepower-and-refinement era: the 160hp 172N (1977), the retractable-gear 172RG Cutlass and 195hp constant-speed Hawk XP, the fixed-gear 180hp 172Q, and the well-sorted 172P (1981). Production stopped in 1986 under the product-liability crisis that gutted U.S. light-plane manufacturing. The line restarted in 1996 with the fuel-injected 172R, the 180hp 172S Skyhawk SP followed in 1998, and the G1000 glass panel arrived mid-2000s. Which year you buy comes down to three things — engine, useful load, and how much panel you want to pay for — and the spread runs from a $35k straight-tail project to a $300k-plus glass SP.

Which year is the smart buy?
The value sweet spot lives in the Lycoming years, 1968 through 1986. For the most airplane per dollar, a 1973–1976 172M is hard to beat: it pairs the near-indestructible, cheap-to-overhaul O-320-E2D with the improved camber-lift wing and the largest supply of any 172 on the market — meaning you can afford to be picky and wait for a clean, corrosion-free, well-logged example instead of settling. If you want more useful load and a slightly more modern airframe, step up to the 1981–1986 172P: it carries the corrected O-320-D2J engine and the 2,400 lb gross weight, the highest of the carbureted fixed-gear line, which makes it the most genuinely usable four-seater of the bunch. Mission-specific buyers are well served too — the 195hp Hawk XP climbs and floats, the RG builds complex time — but only if you accept the higher fuel burn, insurance, and (on the RG) gear-system upkeep. If budget is no object and you want zero compromises, a used 172S Skyhawk SP with the G1000 gives you fuel injection, 180hp, and modern glass; you simply pay for it.
Approach the 1977–1980 172N with your eyes open. It shipped with the Lycoming O-320-H2AD, an engine built to a Cessna spec that suffered chronic camshaft and tappet spalling from poor cold-start valve-train lubrication, made worse by a single-drive dual magneto — it carries ADs 77-20-07 (tappets), 78-12-08 and 78-12-09. A religiously maintained H2AD, or better yet one already converted to the O-320-D2J under the Air Plains STC, is perfectly fine; a cheap N with a runout, original H2AD is a money pit waiting to happen. The 1958–1962 175 Skylark scares buyers with its geared GO-300, but that reputation is largely undeserved — the engine failed mostly because pilots lugged it below its required high-rpm cruise; the real catches are parts scarcity and the discipline to fly it by the book. Finally, two things touch nearly every 172 regardless of year: the seat-rail AD (worn rails can let a seat slide aft on takeoff rotation) and, on all the carbureted models, carb ice — budget for both, and always weigh condition, corrosion, and Cessna's SID inspection status over the model letter.
