Overview

The Rallye is a family of French all-metal low-wing light aircraft originally designed by Morane-Saulnier as the MS.880, which first flew on 10 June 1959. Production passed to Socata (Societe de Construction d'Avions de Tourisme et d'Affaires), a subsidiary of Aerospatiale, when Morane-Saulnier went bankrupt in 1965. Around 3,300 Rallyes were built in France between 1961 and 1984, with final deliveries in December 1984. The design was also license-built in Poland by PZL-Okecie as the PZL-110 Koliber and its derivatives, which continued in production into the 2000s.

The Rallye is instantly recognizable for its large sliding bubble canopy, fixed tricycle landing gear, and — most distinctively — full-span automatic leading-edge slats that give it genuine STOL performance from an otherwise conventional low-wing tourer. Pilots who fly them love the unmatched low-speed handling, forgiving stall, and the feeling of a "mini bush plane" with four seats and a greenhouse view. Detractors point to slow cruise, French-language documentation on early examples, parts scarcity in North America, and mechanic unfamiliarity. In Europe it is a popular club tourer and glider tug; in the US it has a small but devoted following drawn mainly to its short-field and backcountry capability (see backcountry-bush and local-fun-flying).

Performance

Book cruise numbers are modest — the Rallye trades cruise efficiency for low-speed capability. A Rallye 180 will true around 115 KTAS on about 9 gph, noticeably slower than a Piper Archer on the same engine because of the slatted wing and draggy fixed gear. The 235 bumps cruise to about 125-130 KTAS but burns 12-13 gph.

Where the Rallye shines is at the bottom of the envelope. The full-span automatic leading-edge slats deploy at around 60-65 KIAS and delay airflow separation to extreme angles of attack. The published stall in landing configuration for a 180 is around 44 KIAS, but with slats out and full flaps the airplane effectively mushes rather than breaks — many pilots report it is almost impossible to stall in the conventional sense. Slat deployment is entirely aerodynamic (no hydraulics or electrics) and the slats can be seen extending and retracting during slow-flight maneuvering.

Short-field numbers are remarkable for a low-wing four-seater: a Rallye 180 will lift off in under 600 ft at gross and clear 50 ft in about 1,100 ft; landing over 50 ft is typically quoted around 1,000 ft. A Rallye 235 with full slats and flaps can use strips that an equivalent-HP Cessna 182 would not touch.

The low-wing configuration plus substantial flap area make the airplane squirrelly in strong crosswinds close to the stall — pilots learn to fly it with power carried into the flare. Density altitude handling is better than most 4-seaters in the same HP class because the slats keep the stall speed low as TAS climbs.

Payload & Range

Using the Rallye 180 / MS.893 Commodore 180 as the archetype (1,257 lb empty, 2,315 lb MTOW, 1,058 lb useful load, 45 gal / 270 lb usable fuel):

  • Full fuel + 2 pax: 1,058 - 270 = 788 lb available for people and bags. Two 180-lb adults plus ~50 lb baggage easily. Range with reserves ~540 NM at 115 KTAS / 9 gph. A genuine two-person touring mission.
  • Full seats (4x170) + bags (40): 720 lb people + baggage = 338 lb available for fuel = ~56 lb short of full fuel. With full four-seat load you can carry ~35-36 gal (210-215 lb), giving about 3.5 hours endurance and 400 NM with VFR reserves. Realistic for one-leg family trips.
  • Short-field mission: With three adults, short-field departures from 1,500 ft strips are comfortable; at 2,315 lb gross the book ground roll is under 600 ft.
  • Rallye 235 (O-540, ~1,100 lb useful load, 58 gal long-range): Can carry four adults with bags and still put ~45 gal in the tanks — an honest four-seat 450 NM airplane. This is the Rallye variant that best competes with a Cessna 182 on mission capability.
  • Rallye 100/Club (100 HP, two-seat effective): With two adults and bags the airplane is essentially a two-place tourer; the nominal rear seats are usable only for children or baggage.

The slats and flaps mean payload-range numbers translate directly into usable short-field performance — unlike most four-seaters, a fully-loaded Rallye does not lose its STOL ability.

Mission Suitability

  • Flight training (5): The forgiving stall, bubble canopy visibility, and docile slow-flight make it a superb primary trainer in theory. In practice, North American schools avoid it because of parts logistics and A&P unfamiliarity. European clubs still use them. Cross-link: flight-training.
  • Backcountry/bush (8): Among certified low-wing aircraft, only a Helio or Maule rivals its short-field numbers, and both of those are high-wings. The low wing makes loading bulky gear harder and gives less prop clearance on rough strips, but the slats are unmatched among four-seat low-wings. See backcountry-bush.
  • Business travel (3): Too slow. A Rallye 235 cruises at about 125 KTAS, roughly 20 kt slower than a comparably-powered Bonanza or Mooney.
  • Aerobatics (2): The Rallye 100S and some 150ST models are certified for limited aerobatics (spins, lazy eights, steep turns), but the slats make hard-edged aerobatic maneuvers awkward and the airframe is not stressed for anything beyond basic maneuvers.
  • Cross-country (5): Range with optional long-range tanks (58 usable gal on the 235) is respectable at ~650 NM, and the bubble canopy makes long flights enjoyable, but slow cruise limits it to regional touring.
  • Cargo hauling (4): Useful load on a Rallye 235 approaches 1,100 lb, but cabin volume is modest and loading through the sliding canopy is less convenient than a Cessna door.
  • Local fun flying (8): Bubble canopy, benign slow flight, and STOL performance make it a joy for weekend flying, glider towing, and strip-hopping.
  • Surveying (7): Excellent slow-speed stability and panoramic canopy view make it an under-appreciated photo/pipeline platform.

Avionics Ecosystem

Most Rallyes sold in the US came with minimal factory avionics and have since been re-equipped piecemeal. Panel tiers:

  • Budget ($25-45k airframes): Original King KX-155 or Narco stack, single VOR, steam gauges, minimum IFR or day-VFR only. Often with failing or obsolete French instrumentation that is hard to replace (French-metric altimeters, variometers in m/s).
  • Mid ($45-75k): Garmin GNS 430/W, digital transponder with ADS-B Out (uAvionix tailBeacon is common), modernized engine monitor. Standard 6-pack preserved.
  • Upgraded ($75-100k+): Garmin GTN 650, G5 attitude/HSI pair, EDM-900 engine monitor. A few aircraft have been converted with full Dynon SkyView or Garmin G3X Touch under the non-required-equipment STC path used in Europe.

Autopilots are rare. Century I/IIB wing-levelers are occasionally seen. French-equipped panels with ARC or SFIM radios should be replaced at purchase — parts and service do not exist.

STCs & Modifications

The Rallye has a small STC library compared to Cessna/Piper:

  • Long-range fuel tanks — Factory option on many 150/180/235 models, extending usable fuel from ~45 gal to ~58 gal. Adds about 150 NM range.
  • Vortex generators — A European STC drops already-low stall speeds by 2-3 kt.
  • Towing hook — Rallye 180 and 235 are widely used as glider tugs; factory tow-hook kit is still supported.
  • Auxiliary baggage extension — Extends baggage area into the rear fuselage.
  • Metric-to-imperial instrument conversion — Commonly done at import; budget $3-6k.
  • ADS-B Out compliance — uAvionix tailBeacon and Garmin GDL 82 are the usual solutions.

There is no STOL kit for the Rallye because the factory wing is already a STOL design. Conversely there is no cruise-speed mod — the slats are the defining feature and cannot be removed or locked.

Maintenance & Support

See maintenance-ecosystem. This is the Rallye's weakest area in North America:

  • Parts availability: Fair. Daher (current TC holder) still supports the type through their Tarbes facility but lead times for airframe-specific parts can run 4-12 weeks. Lycoming engine parts are unaffected. Franklin and Potez engine parts are the binding constraint for the earliest/MS.894 variants.
  • Mechanic familiarity: Rare. Outside France, the UK, and Poland, finding an A&P who has seen a Rallye before is difficult. First annuals by an unfamiliar shop routinely run 50-80 hours labor.
  • Annual inspection: $2,500-$4,500 typical when an experienced shop exists; $5,000-$8,000 at shops learning the airplane. Budget higher if nose-gear or wing-fitting ADs are due.
  • Expensive items: Canopy ($6-10k), slat assemblies ($3-5k each side for overhaul), nose gear fork ($2-4k), Franklin engine cylinders on MS.894 ($1,800+ each if obtainable).
  • Support network: Rallye owner groups in France (AFRM — Association Francaise des Rallyes et Morane), the UK, and a small US group (Rallye Pilots Association) are essential for parts sharing and knowledge.
  • Documentation: Ensure the aircraft came with English-language POH, MM, and IPC. Retrofitting English documentation after the fact is tedious and sometimes impossible.

  • Orphan discount: Rallyes trade at a 15-25% discount to equivalent-HP Cessna/Piper because the buyer pool is small. This is both an opportunity (cheap entry) and a warning (hard to resell).
  • Price tiers (2026 market):
    • Rallye 100/Club (100-125 HP): $28-45k
    • Rallye 150 / MS.892 Commodore 150: $38-65k
    • Rallye 180 / MS.893 Commodore 180: $45-75k
    • MS.894 Rallye Minerva 220 (Franklin): $35-60k — discounted for engine orphan status

  • Avionics premiums: Same dollar-for-dollar as other GA — a Garmin GTN 650 + G5 panel is worth ~$15-20k over steam gauges.
  • Long-range tanks: Add $3-5k to resale value.
  • Documentation in English: Aircraft with fully translated maintenance records and manuals trade at a meaningful premium over ones still tied to French paperwork.
  • Recent nose-gear fork compliance with the 2016 AD is a must — uninspected aircraft are borderline unsaleable.

Key active/recurring ADs:

  • FAA AD 2016-08-08 (from EASA AD 2014-0272): Repetitive visual and dye-penetrant inspections of the nose-landing-gear wheel axle fork for chafing and cracks. Applies across the MS.880B, MS.885, MS.892, MS.893, MS.894, Rallye 100S, 150T, 150ST, 235C, 235E fleet.
  • AD 77-15-06: Fatigue cracks in engine mount assemblies on certain Rallyes — engine mount inspection at intervals.
  • Rudder clevis wear AD: Following an in-flight rudder clevis failure, recurring inspection required.
  • Wing spar corrosion checks on aircraft operated in coastal/high-humidity environments.

Common pre-buy red flags:

  • Slat hinge wear and corrosion — the automatic slats ride on small hinges that need lubrication and inspection; replacements are slow and expensive from Daher.
  • Canopy crazing — the one-piece sliding canopy is expensive to replace (US$6-10k) and cracked canopies are common.
  • Franklin 6-cylinder engines on MS.894 Minerva — parts supply is very limited. PZL-Franklin rebuilt engines are the usual solution but add complexity.
  • French-specific hardware — some fasteners, bearings and control-rod ends are metric and Morane-specific; imperial substitutes are not approved.
  • Wing bladder leaks on older airframes.
  • Tail stinger corrosion from glider-tug service.

Insurance Profile

See insurance-underwriting. The Rallye sits in the standard fixed-gear single piston category but carries a modest surcharge because of its orphan status:

  • Typical hull-only premium: 1.1-1.5% of agreed hull value, higher than a Cessna 172 at the same value.
  • Typical annual combined premium on a $60k hull with $1M smooth liability: $1,400-$2,000 for an experienced pilot; $2,500+ for low-time pilots.
  • Underwriters want pilot time in type or at least in similar slat/STOL aircraft. First-time Rallye pilots often face a 5-10 hour dual-instruction requirement, which is itself hard to satisfy because instructors familiar with the type are rare.
  • The Franklin-engined MS.894 is the hardest to place — some underwriters decline it outright due to engine parts risk.
  • Glider-tow operations require an endorsement and raise premiums materially.
