Overview

The Cessna 177 Cardinal is a four-seat, single-engine high-wing aircraft produced from 1968 to 1978, with approximately 4,295 built across all variants (fixed-gear and retractable). It was designed as a modern replacement for the Cessna 172, featuring a cantilever wing (no struts), an all-flying stabilator instead of a conventional elevator/stabilizer, wide cabin doors, and a more contemporary appearance. Cessna built 1,543 retractable-gear 177RGs between 1971 and 1978.

The Cardinal's story is one of Cessna's great what-ifs. Intended to retire the 172, it was torpedoed by early handling problems (pilot-induced oscillation from the stabilator), Cessna's own Marketing Division fighting to keep the best-selling 172 in production, and a cantilever wing that cost significantly more to manufacture. The 172 never retired, and the Cardinal — after significant improvements that resolved its early problems — ended up competing against the very airplane it was supposed to replace. The Cardinal lost.

Today the fixed-gear 177B is a rewarding cross-country touring airplane with a wider cabin, better visibility, and more modern feel than a 172, often available at similar or lower prices. The 177RG is a different airplane entirely — a 200 HP retractable that competes with the Cessna 172RG, Piper Arrow, and even approaches Cessna 182RG territory. The two should be evaluated separately.

Critical note on the original 1968 177: The first-year Cardinal with its 150 HP O-320 engine was genuinely underpowered and suffered from stabilator-induced porpoising during landing flare. Cessna's response, Operation "Cardinal Rule," involved 23 inspection and modification instructions including slotted stabilator leading edges and full counterbalance weights. All post-1968 Cardinals should have these modifications incorporated. Any 1968 model that has not been modified should be avoided.

Performance

177B Fixed Gear (180 HP)

The 177B cruises at 124-128 KTAS at 75% power, which is comparable to a Cessna 172 with the same 180 HP engine. The performance similarity is expected — both airplanes have essentially the same power, similar gross weights, and fixed tricycle gear. Where the Cardinal gains is in its cantilever wing, which eliminates strut drag but adds wing weight, roughly breaking even aerodynamically.

Real-world cruise is 122-128 KTAS depending on altitude and leaning, with fuel burn of 9-10 GPH. Rate of climb at 840 fpm is adequate. Service ceiling of 14,600 feet is functional for mountain crossing in the western US.

The stabilator provides noticeably crisper pitch response than the 172's conventional elevator, particularly in the landing flare. This is an advantage for experienced pilots but contributed to the porpoising problems that plagued early Cardinals in the hands of transitioning 172 pilots. Post-modification, the stabilator is well-harmonized and a genuine pleasure to fly.

177RG (200 HP, Retractable)

The 177RG is a meaningfully different airplane. The IO-360 fuel-injected engine produces 200 HP, gross weight increases to 2,800 lbs, and the retractable gear delivers a cruise speed of 148 KTAS — 22 knots faster than the 177B and competitive with aircraft in the next class up.

The Cardinal's wide cabin and large doors make loading significantly easier than a 172. The 177RG's combination of 1,135 lbs useful load, 60 gallons of fuel, and 2,800 lbs gross weight makes it one of the most load-flexible four-seat retractable singles in its class. Four adults with luggage and enough fuel for a 600 nm trip is a realistic 177RG mission profile — something the 172RG cannot match.

The fixed-gear 177B has payload-range characteristics very similar to a 172 with the same engine, which is expected. Where the Cardinal gains is in cabin comfort during long flights — the wider cabin and better door access make the same payload feel less cramped.

  • Flight Training (5): The Cardinal's stabilator and wider cabin are fine for training, but it is not a standard training platform. Flight schools chose the 172 because it is cheaper to operate and has more forgiving handling. Not a bad trainer, just not the optimal one.

Stabilator AD History

The stabilator is the Cardinal's most important AD topic. The original 1968 design was prone to pilot-induced oscillation during landing flare, prompting Cessna's Operation "Cardinal Rule" — a comprehensive modification program including:
