Overview
The Piper PA-28R Arrow is the retractable-gear member of the PA-28 Cherokee family, in continuous production since 1967 -- one of the longest production runs in general aviation history. With nearly 7,000 Arrows built across all variants, it is the most widely produced retractable-gear single-engine airplane ever made. The Arrow's primary role in general aviation is unmistakable: it is THE complex endorsement trainer, alongside the Cessna 172RG Cutlass and Mooney M20 series.
The Arrow adds retractable landing gear and a constant-speed propeller to the proven Cherokee platform, creating an airplane that meets FAA complex aircraft requirements while retaining the docile handling that makes Cherokees popular trainers. With 200 HP and cruise speeds of 130-143 knots depending on variant, the Arrow also serves as a capable cross-country machine and personal transportation aircraft. Its unique automatic gear extension (AGE) system -- designed to prevent gear-up landings by automatically lowering the gear at low airspeed and power -- is one of the most distinctive features in general aviation, though many operators have disabled it.

The Arrow III is the most desirable variant for most buyers. The tapered wing improved both handling and performance over the Hershey bar models, and the conventional tail is universally preferred over the T-tail Arrow IV. The Turbo Arrow III commands a premium for high-altitude operations but brings Continental engine maintenance complexity. The original 180 HP Arrow is lighter and cheaper but noticeably less capable than later 200 HP models.
Performance

The Arrow III's 1,113-lb useful load is good for a four-seat retractable but less generous than the Dakota's 1,392 lbs. With full fuel (432 lbs), 681 lbs remains for occupants and baggage -- comfortable for two adults with generous bags, tight for four.
