Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. Annual inspection is the shop's labor to open and inspect — what they find is the maintenance line, which covers oil changes, plugs, tires, brakes, hoses, lights, a battery and vacuum pump amortised over their life, and the unscheduled squawks that are the largest and least predictable part of it. The Piper PA-28-235/236 lineage represents the biggest engine ever installed in the PA-28 Cherokee family, producing 235 horsepower from various Lycoming O-540 variants across a 30-year production run (1964-1994). The series began as the PA-28-235 Cherokee 235 in 1964, evolved through the Charger and Pathfinder marketing names in the 1970s, and culminated in the PA-28-236 Dakota from 1979 to 1994 -- the most refined version, featuring a tapered semi-tapered wing and a stretched fuselage.

The Dakota's appeal is straightforward: it is a fixed-gear, four-seat airplane with genuine load-hauling capability and respectable cruise performance. With a useful load of nearly 1,400 lbs and 72 gallons of fuel, the Dakota can carry four adults with full bags and still have meaningful range. It is often compared to the Cessna 182 Skylane -- both serve the same "family hauler with range" mission, though the Dakota does it from a low-wing platform with Cherokee handling qualities. The 235 HP O-540 engine makes the Dakota a high-performance aircraft under FAA definitions, requiring a high-performance endorsement to fly.

The PA-28-236 Dakota is the clear pick of the lineup. The tapered wing improved handling and reduced drag, the new O-540-J3A5D engine offered better fuel efficiency and reduced vibration, and the 100-lb gross weight increase to 3,000 lbs translated directly into useful load. Earlier PA-28-235 models are perfectly serviceable but typically sell for less due to the older Hershey bar wing and higher fuel consumption.

Performance

The Dakota cruises at 135-143 KTAS at 75% power depending on altitude and configuration. At 65% power, expect 128-132 KTAS on about 12.5 GPH -- the sweet spot for cross-country efficiency. The 14 GPH figure at 75% is the primary compromise: this is not a fuel-efficient airplane by modern standards, but it moves four people and their gear at a respectable pace.

Rate of climb at 1,110 fpm is strong for the class and noticeably better than a standard Cherokee 180 or Archer. The 235 HP engine gives the Dakota authority during takeoff and climb that lighter PA-28 variants lack, particularly at higher density altitudes. Service ceiling of 17,500 feet is adequate for mountain operations in the western United States, though the normally-aspirated engine loses efficiency above 8,000-10,000 feet.

Takeoff ground roll of 886 feet and landing roll of 640 feet are good numbers for a 3,000-lb airplane. The Dakota is comfortable operating from 3,000-foot runways even at gross weight in warm conditions. Short-field performance is not its primary mission, but it is more capable than its size suggests.

The earlier PA-28-235 models with tip tanks carried up to 84 gallons of fuel, giving them exceptional range but at the cost of slightly higher drag from the tip tanks themselves. The Dakota's 72-gallon integral wing tanks are aerodynamically cleaner and provide 650+ nm of range at economy cruise.
