Overview
The Socata TB family is a series of all-metal, low-wing, single-engine piston aircraft designed by the French manufacturer SOCATA (Société de Construction d'Avions de Tourisme et d'Affaires), a subsidiary of Aérospatiale/EADS, and now supported by Daher. The first prototype flew on 23 September 1977, with French DGAC type certification received 26 April 1979. The family was conceived as a modern replacement for the Rallye series and a European competitor to the Piper Cherokee and Beech Bonanza line.
The TBs are instantly recognizable for their distinctive "humpback" fuselage profile, gull-wing doors (opening upward like a sports car), and club-style seating that gives rear passengers genuine limousine-grade legroom — unusual in a piston single. The cabin is the widest in its class at 50 inches, and visibility from the low wing with bubble canopy is exceptional. Production ran from 1979 until approximately 2013 (with the main bulk wound down by 2006), totaling about 2,150 aircraft across all variants. The TBs have a loyal owner community, particularly strong in Europe, and the "Generation Two" or GT line introduced in early 2000 brought carbon-fiber cockpit roof modifications, improved interiors, and digitally-controlled turbocharging on the TB-21 GT.

Performance
The factory TB-20 Trinidad numbers (159 KTAS at 75% at 8,000 ft) are often reported as optimistic; owner-reported cruise speeds cluster around 153–157 KTAS at ~13.5 GPH. The TB-21 GT is the standout performer — it genuinely turns in 190 KTAS at FL250 with a digitally-controlled turbo and oxygen. The airframe is aerodynamically clean for its class, though the fixed-gear TB-10/TB-200 pays a speed penalty for the spatted mains and non-retractable nose.
The TB-9 Tampico, with a fixed-pitch prop and 160 HP, is noticeably slower than a 172 at altitude despite the aerodynamic advantage — the fixed-pitch prop is the limiting factor. The TB-10 with constant-speed prop and 180 HP behaves much like an Archer in climb and cruise but with better cabin comfort.
High-density-altitude climb performance of all variants is modest; the TB-20's 1,260 fpm sea-level climb degrades significantly by 8,000 ft MSL. The TB-21 turbo is the correct answer for mountain/Western US operations.
Stall behavior is benign and the aircraft is stable in IMC — it's a genuinely pleasant IFR platform.
Payload & Range
TB-20 Trinidad (useful load 1,111 lb, 86 gal / 516 lb usable fuel):
- Full fuel + 2 adults: 1,111 − 516 = 595 lb remaining. Two 190-lb adults fill this easily with ~215 lb for baggage. Range at 75%: ~1,050 NM with IFR reserves. The ideal "long cross-country with couple" scenario.
- Full seats (4 × 180 lb) + 50 lb baggage: 770 lb of payload leaves 341 lb for fuel = ~57 gal. Range drops to approximately 680–720 NM — still excellent for a 4-place.
- Five seats (club + third-row child): Rare configuration; the fifth seat is genuinely usable by children or a small adult. With five 150-lb occupants and 50 lb baggage (800 lb), fuel is limited to ~310 lb (~52 gal), range ~620 NM.
TB-10 Tobago (useful load ~992 lb, 54 gal / 324 lb usable fuel):
- Full fuel + 3 adults is achievable; four adults plus any baggage requires fuel reduction. Range with four adults and minimum fuel falls to 350–400 NM.
TB-21 Trinidad TC gains altitude capability but trades ~75 lb of useful load vs the TB-20 due to turbo installation weight. At FL200+, true airspeed and headwind mitigation can produce the best practical block times in the family.
The TB family's payload-range story is its strongest selling point: the Trinidad is one of the few piston singles that genuinely flies four adults 700+ NM in comfort, rivaling the Bonanza and outperforming the Mooney in cabin space if not raw speed.
Mission Suitability
- Cross-country (9/10): The TB-20/TB-21 are purpose-built tourers. 1,100 NM range, 1,111 lb useful load, club seating, and a 50-inch-wide cabin make them excellent for long legs with 3–4 adults. See cross-country.

- Backcountry (2/10): Low wing, retractable gear on the Trinidads, and modest prop clearance rule out rough strips.

Mechanic familiarity is the second major factor — while any A&P can work on the Lycoming engines, airframe-specific expertise (landing gear rigging, fuel system, door mechanisms) is concentrated at a handful of specialist shops.
