All-in at ~100 flying hours a year, using the midpoint of each range — the same figures broken out under “Cost to own” below. Your number will differ, and mostly for two reasons. Experience sets your insurance: a 2,000-hour pilot with recent training pays 30–40% less than a 200-hour owner, and student owners pay 20–40% more — on the same aircraft that is often a doubling. Location sets your hangar: a T-hangar runs $200–400 a month in the Midwest against $400–1,500 in a coastal metro, and an outside tie-down is less again. Engine reserves move too — a local shop reusing your serviceable cylinders can come in 30–50% under the national specialty-shop pricing we quote, though you trade the warranty and turnaround that comes with it. Reserves are money set aside toward a future overhaul, not a bill this year, and the annual inspection figure is the shop’s labor to look — whatever they find is separate.

Estimate, not a quote. Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. Annual inspection is the shop's labor to open and inspect — what they find is the maintenance line, which covers oil changes, plugs, tires, brakes, hoses, lights, a battery and vacuum pump amortised over their life, and the unscheduled squawks that are the largest and least predictable part of it. Reserves are sinking funds toward an overhaul, not a bill you pay this year — and note that a propeller is due on hours or calendar time, typically six years, so flying less does not put it off forever.

Overview

The Van's RV-10 is the only four-seat aircraft in the RV line and one of the most successful four-seat homebuilt designs ever produced. First flown in 2003, over 1,010 RV-10s have been completed — an extraordinary number for a four-seat experimental. The RV-10 brought Van's trademark performance and efficiency to the four-seat cross-country mission.

The RV-10 seats four in a side-by-side front row with two rear passengers. It's powered by a six-cylinder Lycoming IO-540 at 260HP, providing 171 KTAS cruise with 1,070 lbs useful load — matching or exceeding many certified four-seat aircraft at significantly lower operating cost. With 60 gallons of fuel, range is 717 nm at 75% power.

The RV-10 is nosewheel-only (no tailwheel option) and is not aerobatic. It's designed purely as a cross-country touring and family aircraft — the practical side of the RV line.

The RV-10 has no sub-variants — it's a single design optimized for one mission. However, builder choices create significant variation: engine options range from 210HP (IO-390) to 260HP (IO-540), though the vast majority use the IO-540. Some builders have installed turbonormalized IO-550 engines for high-altitude performance, though this is uncommon.

Performance

The RV-10 with IO-540 at 260HP cruises at 171 KTAS (197 MPH) at 75% power on 12 GPH. At economy cruise (65% power, lean of peak), 160 KTAS on 10.5 GPH provides over 800 nm range from 60 gallons. This beats a Cessna 182 by 30+ knots on similar fuel consumption.

Rate of climb at 1,450 FPM is respectable for a 2,700-lb gross weight aircraft — better than most certified four-seat singles. The 20,000-foot service ceiling allows mountain crossing and high-altitude efficiency.

Stall speed at 55 KIAS makes the RV-10 NOT MOSAIC eligible (Vs1 exceeds 54 KCAS). This is the only RV model that exceeds MOSAIC stall speed limits.

The 1,070 lbs useful load is outstanding — comparable to a Bonanza A36 or Cherokee Six. Four 170-lb adults with 50 lbs of baggage each and full fuel (60 gal / 360 lbs) are within gross weight. This payload flexibility is the RV-10's defining advantage over certified four-seaters in its price range.

Takeoff and landing performance is adequate but not STOL — 738-foot ground roll at gross weight requires standard runway operations.

Mission Suitability

Common Problems:
