Note on the J3C-65: This is the "standard" J-3 Cub. When people say "Cub," they almost always mean the Continental A-65-powered J3C-65. All performance data in this page references this variant unless otherwise noted. The Type Certificate (A-691) also covers the PA-11 Cub Special, which succeeded the J-3 in 1947.

Performance

The J-3 Cub is not a performance airplane in any conventional sense. Its virtues are predictability, simplicity, and the ability to operate from absurdly short strips at absurdly low speeds. Book cruise speed of 65 KTAS (75 mph) is honest if optimistic -- many owners report 60-63 KTAS in level cruise at 2,150 RPM. Any meaningful headwind turns a cross-country into an endurance test.

Fuel burn of 3.5-4.5 GPH is remarkably efficient, but the 12-gallon tank limits range to roughly 190 nm with a sensible reserve. Endurance is approximately 2.5-3 hours depending on power setting and conditions. This is a local airplane, not a cross-country machine.

Takeoff and landing performance is the J-3's party trick. The 370-foot ground roll at sea level is impressive, and with the light wing loading of approximately 7 lbs/sq ft, the Cub gets airborne in a startlingly short distance. Landing rolls under 300 feet are routine. With practice and a light headwind, competent pilots put Cubs into strips well under 500 feet total length.

Rate of climb at 450 fpm is adequate at sea level but degrades quickly with altitude and temperature. At gross weight on a warm day at 5,000 feet density altitude, expect 200-250 fpm. The 65 HP engine has no margin for error at high density altitudes -- plan accordingly.

The stall is benign and well-mannered. The J-3 will mush and nod gently rather than break sharply, which is precisely why it was chosen as a mass-market trainer. However, the Cub's docile stall characteristics have contributed to a high stall/spin accident rate because pilots are tempted to fly slow and low, where recovery from a departure is impossible.

The J-3 Cub's payload-range picture is defined by the tension between its 540-lb useful load and the 12-gallon fuel tank. The airplane is fuel-limited more than weight-limited.

With two average adults and full fuel, the J-3 is within gross weight but without much margin. Two large adults (200+ lbs each) at full fuel approach or exceed the 1,220 lb gross weight limit. This is a real-world constraint that every Cub pilot must manage.

With heavier occupants, fuel must be reduced to stay legal. The 150 nm range is adequate for local flying and short hops but eliminates any pretense of cross-country utility.

The Weight Reality

The J-3 Cub was designed in an era when the "standard pilot" weighed 170 lbs. Modern pilots and passengers frequently exceed this assumption. Weight management is not optional in a Cub -- it is a fundamental part of every flight. Pilots who fly Cubs regularly develop an instinctive awareness of loading that serves them well in any aircraft.

Mission Suitability

Flight Training (7/10): The J-3 Cub is among history's most effective primary trainers, and it remains excellent for tailwheel transition training. The tandem seating, stick-and-rudder controls, and forgiving slow-speed handling teach coordination skills that tricycle-gear trainers cannot. Docked points because the lack of electrical system, radios, and instruments limits training to uncontrolled fields and VFR basics. Not suitable for instrument training. For pure stick-and-rudder and tailwheel endorsement, it is a 10/10.

Backcountry (6/10): The Cub is the spiritual ancestor of all backcountry flying, and Cubs absolutely can and do access remote strips. However, the 65 HP engine limits payload severely -- solo backcountry with minimal gear is realistic, but two occupants plus camping equipment will exceed useful load. The PA-12 Super Cruiser and Cessna 170 are more practical backcountry machines. With engine STCs (C-85, O-200), backcountry capability improves substantially.

Business Travel (1/10): No. The J-3 has no electrical system, no radios, no useful baggage space, a 65 KTAS cruise speed, and two tandem seats. It is the antithesis of business travel.

Aerobatics (1/10): Not approved for aerobatic flight. The airframe is not stressed for aerobatic loads. Unauthorized aerobatics in Cubs have killed many pilots.

Cross-Country (2/10): The 12-gallon tank, 65 KTAS cruise speed, and lack of radios and instruments make the J-3 a poor cross-country platform. A 200 nm trip takes over three hours and requires a fuel stop. It can be done -- people have flown Cubs coast to coast -- but it is an adventure, not transportation.

Cargo Hauling (1/10): With 540 lbs useful load consumed largely by fuel and occupants, there is no meaningful cargo capacity. The baggage area behind the rear seat holds perhaps 20 lbs of soft goods.

Local Fun (10/10): This is the airplane's reason for being. A calm morning, a grass strip, the sound of a Continental four-banger at idle, the smell of avgas and fabric dope, the view over the side of the open door as you slip toward a three-point landing -- this is flying distilled to its essence. The J-3 Cub is the most fun you can have at 65 knots. Nothing else scores higher on pure joy.

Surveying (2/10): Slow speed is an advantage, but lack of electrical system, limited panel space, and tandem seating make it impractical for organized survey work.

Avionics Ecosystem

Most J-3 Cubs have no electrical system. This is not a limitation to be overcome -- it is a feature that defines the airplane's character and simplicity. Owners who want avionics generally fall into three categories:

Purist ($0): No electrical system. Hand-prop start. No transponder, no radio, no GPS. A handheld radio (Icom A25) in a pouch and a portable GPS (ForeFlight on an iPad) on the glareshield. This is how the majority of Cubs are flown, and it works perfectly at uncontrolled grass strips. ADS-B compliance is not required below 10,000 feet MSL outside Mode C veils and Class B/C airspace.

Minimal Electrical ($2,000-$5,000): A lightweight electrical system (alternator or battery-only) supporting a single COM radio and a portable ADS-B Out device (uAvionix SkyBeacon or tailBeacon). Opens up operations at towered fields and within Mode C veils. The battery can be installed via logbook entry per AC 43.13.

Panel-Mounted ($5,000-$12,000): A full electrical system with a Garmin GTR 200 COM, GTX 335 transponder (ADS-B Out), and perhaps a GPS (Garmin aera or GI 275). This level of modification is uncommon and changes the character of the airplane significantly. Most Cub purists would consider this overkill.

The critical consideration: any electrical system adds weight to an already weight-limited airplane. Every pound of avionics is a pound less of pilot, passenger, or fuel.

The C-85 (either stock or stroked) is widely considered the optimal J-3 engine upgrade. It provides a meaningful performance increase without the weight penalty and complexity of the O-200. The stroker conversion installs O-200 crankshaft and pistons in the C-85 case, yielding near-O-200 power while retaining the lighter C-85 footprint.

For an airplane produced in numbers exceeding 19,000 over 75+ years ago, the J-3 has a mercifully short AD list:

  • Wing strut and strut fork inspection (AD 47-30-02, recurring): The most significant recurring AD. Requires periodic inspection of wing strut forks for cracks. Can be terminated by installing modernized sealed struts (Univair or equivalent), which is the recommended approach for any buyer.
