Overview
The Avid Flyer is a two-seat, strut-braced high-wing experimental amateur-built aircraft designed by Dean Wilson and first flown in 1983. Wilson's Light Aero Inc. (later Avid Aircraft), based in Caldwell, Idaho, debuted the prototype at Oshkosh 1983 with the explicit goal of bridging the gap between matured Part 103 ultralights like the Quicksilver and classic fabric taildraggers like the Piper Cub, Aeronca Champ, and Taylorcraft. Wilson's breakthrough was combining Junkers-style full-span flaperons, a fabric-covered aluminum-tube structure, and folding wings into a kit that a reasonably skilled builder could complete in 400–600 hours for well under $15,000 in 1980s dollars.
The Avid is the direct ancestor of the kitfox — Dan Denney was an early Avid customer and collaborator who split from Wilson in 1984 to found Denney Aerocraft, taking the basic configuration with him and evolving it independently. The two aircraft share a family resemblance (tube-and-fabric, high wing, flaperons, folding wings, Rotax power) but diverged in engine mounting, cabin width, gear geometry, and refinement. Avid production continued through Mark IV, Magnum, Catalina, and Amphibian variants until Light Aero went bankrupt in 1998. Kit rights have since passed through several hands (Airdale, Avid Aircraft LLC), with limited parts support continuing. Several thousand Avids were built worldwide; active survivors number in the low thousands and they remain a staple of bush-flying, grass-strip, and recreational fun-flying communities, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, New Zealand, and Australia.
Owners fly Avids for the same reason they fly kitfox airframes: near-ultralight acquisition cost, genuine 200-foot STOL numbers, the ability to trailer home on folded wings, and the freedom of the experimental category.

Performance
Book numbers for a 582-powered Mark IV STOL typically read cruise 85 mph (74 KTAS) and stall clean/dirty around 32/26 KIAS. Real-world cruise sits at 70–80 KTAS once you add tundra tires, radios, and a second headset; most owners plan 75 mph groundspeed and call it honest. Climb performance is outstanding for the horsepower — 800–1000 fpm solo, still 600+ fpm at gross on a warm day — but density altitude matters: the 582 is already breathing thin at 8,000 ft DA and will not deliver book numbers.
The Junkers full-span flaperons are the defining feature. Deployed, they drop stall well below 30 KIAS and make the 200-foot landing roll genuinely achievable on grass with a trained pilot and headwind. The penalty is high drag; the Avid is not a cross-country machine, and any crosswind component above 8–10 knots is challenging because the light wing loading makes it balloon.
A 912-powered Mark IV gains about 15 hp over the 582, and the four-stroke fuel burn drops to around 3.5 gph at cruise (vs. 4.0–4.5 gph for the two-stroke 582). Cruise climbs modestly to 85–90 KTAS. The real benefit is reliability and TBO, not speed.
Payload & Range
With 846 lb empty (a realistic 582 Mark IV with radios) and a 1,151 lb MTOW, useful load is roughly 640 lb.
- Full fuel (14 gal / 84 lb) + solo pilot (200 lb): Plenty of margin; range ~260 nm with reserves at 75 KTAS / 4.0 gph.
- Full fuel + 2 pilots (400 lb): 156 lb remaining for baggage/camping gear — workable but snug in a 39"-wide cabin.
- Full seats (400 lb) + camping gear (100 lb): Fuel limited to roughly 10 gallons / ~190 nm range.
- Float-equipped Catalina: Subtract ~80 lb for floats/rigging; two adults + fuel + gear is tight and a Rotax 912 is effectively mandatory.
The practical ownership reality is that an Avid is a one-plus-half-person airplane with gear, or a two-person airplane without gear. This is why most owners plan it as a day-trip, fly-in camping, or local bush exploration machine rather than a touring platform.

Mission Suitability
Backcountry/bush (8): This is the Avid's home turf. Junkers flaperons, tundra-tire-friendly gear, and low wing loading give it Super Cub-class short-field numbers at a fraction of the price. Downsides vs. a kitfox or Super Cub: narrow cabin, lighter structure, and the two-stroke engine maintenance cycle on 582-equipped airframes. See backcountry-bush.

Surveying (5): Slow speed and good visibility help photo/observation work, but limited endurance (2.5–3 hours) and marginal IFR/night capability limit professional use.
Flight training (3): Experimental category prohibits commercial instruction; only useful for insured owner transition training.
Cross-country (2): 14-gallon tank and ~75 KTAS cruise make 200 nm legs the practical limit.
Business travel, cargo hauling, aerobatics: Not suitable.
Avionics Ecosystem
Avids almost never carry certified panels. Typical configurations by budget tier:
- Bare minimum (~$500): Handheld Icom A16/A25 VHF, uAvionix SkyBeacon or tailBeaconX for ADS-B Out, iPad with ForeFlight or FltPlanGo as primary nav. Steam gauges (ASI, ALT, compass, EGT/CHT for the 582) only.
- Basic ($2,500–5,000): Panel-mounted Icom A220 or Garmin GTR 200, GTX 327 or uAvionix tailBeaconX, Dynon D3 or Garmin G5 as a single EFIS.
- Mid-tier ($6,000–10,000): Dynon SkyView HDX 7" with integrated EMS (critical for 582 monitoring — EGT, CHT, water temp, rpm, fuel flow), GTR 200B com, ADS-B In via uAvionix SkyEcho or GDL 50.
- High-tier ($12,000+): Rare on Avids; at this point the avionics exceed the airframe value. Occasionally seen on 912-powered Magnum builds as twin-EFIS Dynon or Garmin G3X Touch installations.

STCs & Modifications
Experimentals don't use STCs, but common owner modifications include:
- Rotax 912 UL/ULS conversion: $18,000–28,000 for engine and new mount/cowling; adds ~25 lb empty weight but eliminates the 300-hour 582 overhaul cycle. Most value-adding upgrade on any Avid.
- Subaru EA81/EJ22 conversion: Historically popular; cheap cores but heavy and with a mixed reliability record. Decreasingly seen.
- Wing extension kit (STOL wing retrofit on Speedwing): Rare; usually easier to find a factory STOL airframe.
- Tundra tires (26" or 29" Alaskan Bushwheels): $2,500–4,500; essential for genuine bush use and improve ground handling on rough surfaces.
- Extended range fuel tanks: +6–10 gal in wing tanks, stretching range to 350 nm.
- Slats / VGs (vortex generators): $200–600; marginal additional stall reduction.

Maintenance & Support
Parts availability — fair. Avid Aircraft LLC (current rights holder) sells some parts directly; the kitfox community and aftermarket vendors (Aircraft Spruce, Leading Edge Air Foils, California Power Systems) cover many shared components. Fabric, hardware, Rotax parts, and generic experimental consumables are easy. Airframe-specific parts — cowlings, specific fairings, original-spec fittings — often require fabrication or salvage from wrecks.
Mechanic familiarity — specialist. A typical GA A&P will not want to touch an Avid. The community is concentrated in bush-flying regions (Idaho, Alaska, Montana, Pacific Northwest, New Zealand). The AvidFoxFlyers forum and the Kitfox dealer network are the primary knowledge base. For condition inspections, owners either do them (experimental repairman certificate) or ship to a known shop.

Value drivers, in rough order of importance:
- Engine type and remaining hours. A 912 roughly doubles the value of an equivalent 582 airframe. On a 582, hours-since-top matter more than total airframe time.
- Fabric condition and age. Sub-10-year recover adds $4,000–6,000.
- Airframe pedigree — builder quality. Known-builder airframes with clean logs and a reputable pre-buy history command a premium.
- Panel. A Dynon SkyView with engine monitor is worth $4,000–6,000 over steam gauges on a 582 (because engine monitoring meaningfully extends 582 life).
- Bushwheels, extended tanks, folding-wing trailer. Packaged together, these can add $4,000–8,000.

ADs & Common Problems
Experimentals don't receive FAA ADs, but Avids have well-documented recurring issues:
- Engine mechanical failure rate: A Kitplanes safety analysis found Avids suffered significantly more engine mechanical failures than kitfox airframes over a 10-year window (nine vs. two). The root cause is traced to Avid's inverted Rotax mount producing a high thrust line, stressing the engine-mount structure and complicating cooling, whereas Kitfoxes mount the Rotax upright.
- Rotax 582 TBO at 300 hours is the single biggest operational headache — owners commonly see top-end work (piston/ring/cylinder) at 200–250 hours and crank rebuilds at 300.
- Water pump and rotary valve issues on high-time 582s; rebuild kits are cheap but downtime adds up.
- Fabric condition: Many Avids are now 25–40 years old; poly-fiber recovers run $3,000–6,000 in materials and many hundreds of hours of labor.
- Wing strut and lift-strut fitting corrosion, especially on coastal or float aircraft. The aluminum-tube main spar has no known in-service failures but requires inspection at the strut attach fittings.
- Main gear weld failures on the early bungee-sprung gear on hard landings; later coil-spring and bungee gear is more robust.
- Builder quality variance: Because kits span 15 years of instruction revisions and an unknown population of individual builders, every Avid should be treated as a one-off. Pre-buys must include a full structural inspection by a mechanic familiar with the type.
- Flaperon bellcrank wear and pushrod alignment can induce control stiction; routine inspection item.
Insurance Profile
Avids are a hard insurance market. Two-seat experimental taildraggers with two-stroke engines, limited parts support, and a long bankruptcy history scare underwriters. Typical quotes in 2026:
- Liability-only: $500–900/yr
- Hull + liability, low-time taildragger pilot: Often declined or $2,500+/yr
- Hull + liability, 500+ hr tailwheel, 25+ hr in type: $1,200–1,800/yr on a $25,000 hull
