Note on production numbers: Of the 1,541 civilian PA-11s built, approximately 600 were delivered with the A-65 engine and the remainder with the C-90. Many A-65 examples have since been upgraded to C-85 or C-90 engines under the type certificate data sheet, so the majority of flying PA-11s today have 85-90 HP. Buyers should verify engine installation paperwork carefully.

Performance

The PA-11 with the C-90 engine is a noticeably livelier airplane than the A-65-powered J-3 Cub. The additional 25 horsepower (a 38% increase) transforms the aircraft from marginally powered with two occupants to comfortably adequate. Climb rate increases from the J-3's 450 fpm to approximately 540 fpm at sea level, and the airplane feels less strained at gross weight.

Cruise speed with the C-90 is approximately 75 KTAS (87 mph), roughly 10 knots faster than a stock J-3. Fuel burn increases proportionally to about 5 GPH, but the PA-11's larger 17-gallon fuel tank (versus the J-3's 12 gallons) provides meaningfully better range of approximately 300 nm with reserve. This is the single most important practical difference between the PA-11 and J-3: an extra 100+ nm of range opens up the airplane for short cross-country flights that the J-3 simply cannot manage without a fuel stop.

Short-field performance remains excellent. The 350-foot ground roll and 700-foot over-50-foot takeoff distance are competitive with any modern LSA. Landing performance is similarly impressive, with ground rolls under 300 feet routine for experienced pilots. The light wing loading and low approach speeds make the PA-11 comfortable on rough grass strips that would challenge heavier aircraft.

The PA-11 retains the J-3's benign stall characteristics. The break is gentle, recovery is immediate, and the airplane gives ample warning through airframe buffet. Stall speed of approximately 30-33 KIAS makes this one of the slowest-stalling certified aircraft in existence.

PA-11 vs. J-3: The Weight Tradeoff

The PA-11's heavier engine (C-90 vs. A-65) reduces useful load by approximately 50 lbs compared to the J-3, despite the identical 1,220 lb gross weight. The PA-11 compensates with its larger fuel tank and better cruise efficiency. In practice, the PA-11 carries the same two people roughly the same distance as a J-3 but gets there 10 knots faster and with a more comfortable power margin.

Mission Suitability

Flight Training (6/10): An excellent tailwheel trainer that improves on the J-3 by allowing solo from the front seat, giving the student better forward visibility for landings. The C-90 engine provides more margin for training maneuvers. Docked points because most PA-11s still lack electrical systems and radios, limiting training to uncontrolled VFR environments. For tailwheel endorsements and stick-and-rudder fundamentals, it is superb.

Backcountry (7/10): A step above the J-3 for backcountry use thanks to the C-90's better climb performance and the larger fuel tank. Solo backcountry with camping gear is very practical. Two occupants plus minimal gear is feasible but requires careful weight management. The PA-11 accesses the same short, rough strips as the J-3 while offering better margins. Avionics Ecosystem

The PA-11's avionics situation mirrors the J-3 Cub almost exactly. Most examples lack an electrical system from the factory, and the panel is minimal: airspeed, altimeter, tachometer, oil temperature, and oil pressure.

Purist ($0): Hand-prop start, no electrical system, handheld radio and portable GPS. Perfectly adequate for uncontrolled-field VFR operations. The majority of PA-11s fly this way.

Minimal Electrical ($2,000-$5,000): Lightweight electrical system supporting a single COM radio (Garmin GTR 200 or equivalent) and portable ADS-B solution. Opens towered-field access. Battery installation via logbook entry per AC 43.13.

PA-11 to PA-18 Conversion

A note of caution: some PA-11s have been modified extensively with PA-18 Super Cub components (wings, gear, engine mounts) to approximate PA-18 performance.
