Overview
The Yak-55M is a single-seat, mid-wing, all-metal cantilever monoplane designed by the Yakovlev OKB for unlimited-class competition aerobatics. It evolved from the original Yak-55 (first flight 1981) when DOSAAF demanded a higher roll rate to keep pace with the new Sukhoi Su-26. The "M" variant first flew in May 1989 and entered production in 1990 at the Arsenyev Progress plant. Approximately 106 airframes had been built by the end of 1993, with low-rate production continuing through the 1990s and sporadically into the early 2000s. The airplane's defining traits are a shortened tapered wing (8.1 m span, ~138 sq ft), a symmetrical airfoil, a 360 HP Vedeneyev M-14P nine-cylinder radial, fixed titanium-sprung tailwheel gear, and a ±9/-6 G airframe. In the United States almost all examples operate in the Experimental Exhibition category. Users include current and former national team aerobatic pilots, airshow performers, and enthusiast owners who want a genuine Unlimited competition mount without the six-figure price of an Extra or Sukhoi. The Yak-55M is the dominant variant in U.S. and European competition circles; original long-wing Yak-55s are rare and considered obsolete for Unlimited work.
Performance
Book cruise is ~140 KTAS at ~65% power, but the M-14P's appetite (18+ GPH in cruise, 25+ at climb power) makes cruise flight an expensive proposition and most owners treat the airplane as a local-field aerobatic machine. Climb rate of 3000+ fpm is genuine at gross but the airplane is actually optimized for energy management in the box, not for getting anywhere. Roll rate is in the 320–345 °/sec range — the reason for the shortened wing — making it competitive with the Sukhoi Su-26 and early Extras. Published Vne of ~227 kt (420 km/h) is rarely approached; most competition work happens between 80 and 180 KIAS. Density altitude hurts the radial less than it hurts normally-aspirated flat engines because of the fixed-pitch propeller tuning and large displacement, but the short wing means the airplane lands fast and doesn't float.
Payload & Range
Single-seat airplane with a ~291 lb useful load makes payload-range trivial to compute — and trivial is the right word.
- Competition configuration: 180 lb pilot + parachute (20 lb) + smoke oil (20 lb) = 220 lb; remaining 71 lb = ~12 gal fuel. This is the normal flight: 45 minutes in the box, land hot.
- Full fuel local: 37 gal × 6 lb = 222 lb, leaving ~69 lb for pilot and chute — under gross only for a very light pilot. In practice owners fly with half tanks or less for aerobatics (reduced inertia, lower Vne stress) and fill for ferry only.
- Ferry cross-country: Full fuel, light pilot, no smoke oil gives ~270 nm at 148 KTAS, ~1.8 hr endurance with reserves. Realistic ferry legs are 200 nm.
- Useful load is not the point. This is a sporting machine; if you need payload, buy something else.

Mission Suitability
- Aerobatics (9/10): Purpose-built Unlimited competition airframe with ±9G, symmetric wing, full inverted fuel and oil, and roll rates that remain competitive in Sportsman through Unlimited. The only reason it isn't a 10 is that the Extra 300 and Sukhoi Su-26 edge it in snap authority and modern cockpit ergonomics. See aerobatics.
- Local fun flying (7/10): A wonderful airshow-style airplane for a pilot who enjoys flying the airplane itself. Noisy, thirsty, demanding on the ground, but hugely rewarding.
- Cross-country (3/10): 270 nm range, single seat, no baggage, minimal avionics, and poor comfort make it a poor tourer. A few owners do ferry them between contests but it is not pleasant.
- Flight training (2/10): Single seat disqualifies it from dual instruction; tailwheel and radial handling are demanding.
- Backcountry / cargo / business / surveying (1–2/10): No payload, no second seat, no IFR capability, no utility mission fit whatsoever.
Avionics Ecosystem
Factory panels are minimalist Soviet steam gauges: airspeed in km/h, altimeter in meters, Russian-language placards, a basic VHF comm, and often an accelerometer/G-meter as the most important instrument. U.S.-operated airframes typically receive a Westernization package during import or first annual:
- Budget (~$3–6k): Garmin GTR 200 comm, Garmin GTX 335 ADS-B Out transponder, uAvionix tailBeacon, retained Russian primary instruments.
- Mid (~$8–15k): Replace ASI/altimeter with kt/ft units, add a Dynon D3 or Garmin G5 backup, portable GPS.

Competition owners often keep the panel minimal — weight and simplicity matter more than capability in an airplane that never leaves the box.
STCs & Modifications
The Yak-55M operates in Experimental Exhibition in the U.S., so "STCs" don't apply in the certified sense, but common field approvals and modifications include:
- M-14PF 400 HP upgrade — a factory-supported hot-rodded M-14P producing ~400 HP; adds ~$15k over a standard overhaul and noticeably sharpens vertical performance.
- Composite MT three-blade propeller — replaces the original V-530TA-D35 two-blade; smoother, better ground clearance, ~$9–12k installed.
- Western exhaust systems — Vetter or custom stub stacks for noise and weight savings.
- Inverted fuel/oil system upgrades — most Yak-55Ms came inverted-capable from the factory but older systems are frequently rebuilt.

- Parts availability (fair): The M-14P ecosystem is supported by U.S. specialists (M-14P Inc., Barrett Precision Engines, Performance Aero) and European shops (Richard Goode Aerobatics, Termikas). Airframe parts are harder — wing skins, canopies, and some sheet metal come from Russia or are fabricated by specialty shops, and supply has become less reliable since 2022.
- Mechanic familiarity (specialist): The average A&P will not touch an M-14P or an all-metal Russian airframe. Owners cluster around a handful of shops nationwide; many owners learn to do their own basic maintenance under A&P supervision.
- Annual cost estimate ($14k typical): Breakdown: annual condition inspection $2–3k, oil changes and plugs $1k, M-14P top-end reserve $3–4k, airframe reserves $2k, hangar $3k, misc $1–2k. Does not include overhaul reserves.

Valuation Factors
Price tiers observed in the U.S. market (2024–2026):
- $50–65k: High-time M-14P (near TBO or past), older avionics, tired paint, unknown or incomplete Russian logs. Project-grade.
- $70–90k: Mid-time engine (~300–500 hr SMOH), Westernized panel, clean import paperwork, good paint. This is the typical listing.
- $95–120k: Fresh M-14P overhaul (or M-14PF 400 HP), MT composite prop, modern avionics, documented low-G history, show-quality paint.
Value drivers: engine time SMOH (each hundred hours is worth ~$5–7k given $48k overhaul cost), propeller type, import/airworthiness paperwork completeness, and airframe G-history. ADs & Common Problems
Experimental Exhibition aircraft aren't subject to FAA ADs in the certified sense, but Yakovlev and the Russian CAA have issued service bulletins that responsible owners comply with:
- Wing spar inspections — recurring SB for wing attach fittings given the ±9G life the airplane sees.
- M-14P cylinder and pushrod tube issues — the radial's Achilles heel is oil leaks around pushrod tubes and cylinder base seals; cylinder top-end work is routine at 500–750 hr.
- Magneto and ignition harness fatigue — Russian M-9F magnetos are often replaced with Slick or modernized units during overhaul.
- Landing gear leg cracking — titanium main gear legs have been known to develop cracks from hard arrivals; inspection with dye penetrant each annual.
- Corrosion — early-production airframes stored outdoors in Russia before export often show hidden corrosion in the wing root and rear fuselage.
- Fuel tank sealant degradation — the original sealant deteriorates and tanks frequently need resealing.
Pre-buy red flags: no logbook translation, unknown TTAF, mystery M-14P provenance, and evidence of a heavy landing (wrinkled skins aft of the main gear).
Insurance Profile
The Yak-55M sits in the hardest-to-insure category in general aviation: single-seat, Unlimited aerobatic, experimental, radial-engine, tailwheel, Russian-built. Underwriters who will quote it are few (Starr, Global, and a handful of specialty brokers like NationAir and Falcon). Typical figures:
- Hull only (in-motion): $3,500–$6,000/yr on an $80k hull for a current competition pilot with 500+ TT, 100+ tailwheel, and prior Yak/Sukhoi/Extra time.
- Liability: $1M smooth is usually unavailable; $100k/$100k sublimits are standard, often with passenger exclusion (trivial here since it's single-seat).
- Ground-only policies: Common for airshow/competition-only aircraft, dramatically cheaper.
- Endorsements: Underwriters typically require aerobatic competency training, IAC membership or contest participation, and a check-out from a qualified instructor in a Yak-52 or two-seat aerobatic airplane before solo.
