Overview

The Europa is a British two-seat, side-by-side, low-wing composite kit aircraft designed by Ivan Shaw and first flown in 1992. Manufactured by Europa Aircraft (UK), based at Scottow Enterprise Park in Norwich and owned since 2008 by Swift Technology Group, the design is unusual for offering both a monowheel configuration (single retractable main wheel plus retractable wing outriggers and a tailwheel) and a tri-gear configuration. Over 450 Europas have been completed and flown worldwide, making it one of the most successful European composite kit designs of the past three decades.

Three generations exist. The Europa Classic (1992 onward) was the original foam-and-glass sandwich airframe with an 80 hp Rotax 912UL. The Europa XS (introduced 1999) strengthened the airframe, raised gross weight, added a larger cockpit and optional long-range tanks, and supported the 100 hp Rotax 912ULS and 115 hp turbocharged Rotax 914. The Europa NG ("New Generation", current production) replaces foam-core components with moulded composite parts, reducing build time and improving repeatability. The Europa Motorglider variant uses an extended 47 ft wing for soaring.

The airplane is known for extraordinary efficiency: a monowheel XS with a 100 hp Rotax 912ULS will true out at roughly 140 KTAS on about 4.5 gph, and a 914-powered example can reach 174 KTAS at 10,000 ft. The UK Europa Club is an active builder/owner community and the primary repository of build manuals, service bulletins, and mods.

Performance

Book cruise for the 912ULS monowheel is ~140 KTAS; tri-gear gives up roughly 8-10 knots to gear drag. The turbocharged 914 monowheel is the performance benchmark at 174 KTAS at 10,000 ft - faster than many certified retractable singles on less than half the fuel. Real-world economy cruise around 125 KTAS on 3.8-4.2 gph is routinely reported by owners, yielding 30-35 nm/gal - comparable to a modern diesel car.

Stall speed in the landing configuration is ~49 KIAS with warning buffet 3-4 knots above. The wing is a laminar-flow design and does not tolerate surface imperfections or bugs well; owners report cruise penalties of 4-6 knots with a bug-splattered leading edge. Climb is honest 1,000 fpm at gross with the 912ULS and 1,300 fpm with the 914.

The monowheel is demanding in crosswinds and ground handling - it has no differential braking, and directional control on rollout is by rudder alone until the outriggers touch. Prop strikes and groundloops in inexperienced hands are the reason the tri-gear was introduced and now dominates sales.

Payload & Range

With an empty weight around 840 lb and gross of 1,370 lb, useful load is ~530 lb.

  • Full standard fuel (18 gal / 108 lb): 422 lb for people + bags. Two 180 lb adults leaves ~62 lb for baggage - workable for a weekend trip.
  • Long-range tank (28 gal / 168 lb): 362 lb for people + bags. Two 180 lb adults leaves only ~2 lb baggage - effectively a solo long-range configuration.
  • Two people + half fuel (9 gal): easy, with ~460 lb for occupants (well within limits) and still ~280 nm range.
  • Solo max-range: single pilot at 200 lb with full 28 gal tanks and 20 lb baggage leaves substantial margin; range approaches 1,000 nm at economy cruise. This is the Europa's defining capability - few two-seaters can match its solo cross-country reach.

For typical two-up touring missions, the 18-gallon standard tank plus ~4 hours endurance at 130 KTAS covers most practical legs without compromising baggage.

Mission Suitability

  • Cross-country (8) - The Europa's signature strength. 140+ KTAS on Mogas at 4-5 gph, 700+ nm range with the optional 28-gallon tank, and side-by-side seating with decent baggage make this a genuinely capable two-place tourer. The turbo 914 version is one of the most efficient high-altitude tourers in GA.
  • Local fun flying (8) - Light, responsive controls; the monowheel is a conversation-starter; composite ramp appeal is high.
  • Business travel (5) - Two seats and VFR-only (Permit to Fly in UK; most US builds are day/night VFR) limit utility, but speed and economy are excellent for solo business runs.
  • Flight training (3) - Not a trainer. Experimental category, demanding monowheel handling, and laminar wing make it poorly suited to ab initio instruction. Acceptable for personal transition training.
  • Surveying (3) - Fast and efficient but low wing and two seats limit observer/equipment utility.
  • Aerobatics (2) - Not approved for aerobatics. Sport maneuvers only.
  • Backcountry (2) - Low wing, small wheels, laminar flow wing, and fragile composite belly all argue strongly against unimproved strips.
  • Cargo hauling (2) - 530 lb useful load minus fuel leaves ~420 lb for two people and bags.

Avionics Ecosystem

  • Legacy (1990s-early 2000s): Steam six-pack with analog Rotax EIS (Grand Rapids or similar), handheld or Garmin GNC 250XL GPS/COM, basic transponder.
  • Mid-tier (2005-2015): Dynon D10A or D100 EFIS + engine monitor, Garmin GNS 430/530, GTX 327 transponder. Typical on well-kept used airframes.
  • Modern (NG builds and recent upgrades): Dual Garmin G3X Touch or Dynon SkyView HDX, GTN 650Xi, GTR 200, GTX 45R ADS-B, autopilot (Trio or G3X integrated). $25-40k panels are common in fresh NG builds.

IFR is theoretically possible in the US experimental category with the right equipment and op-lim amendment, but the Europa is predominantly flown day-VFR due to UK Permit-to-Fly limitations and the airframe's sensitivity to ice on the laminar wing.
