Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. Annual inspection is the shop's labor to open and inspect — what they find is the maintenance line, which covers oil changes, plugs, tires, brakes, hoses, lights, a battery and vacuum pump amortised over their life, and the unscheduled squawks that are the largest and least predictable part of it. Overview

The Piaggio P.180 Avanti is one of the most distinctive aircraft in general aviation: a pressurized twin-turboprop business aircraft built around a patented three-lifting-surface configuration with rear-mounted pusher propellers. Designed by Piaggio engineers starting in 1979 (with a brief Learjet collaboration 1983-1986), the configuration was patented in 1982, first flew in 1986, received Italian certification on 7 March 1990 and FAA certification on 2 October 1990. The Avanti II (upgraded PT6A-66B engines, glass panel, 402 KTAS max cruise) was certified by EASA in 2005. The Avanti EVO followed in 2014 with new five-blade scimitar props, aerodynamic winglets, reduced cabin noise, redesigned nacelles, and improved hot-and-high performance.

The Avanti is marketed as a jet alternative: it delivers near-jet cruise speeds (402 KTAS) at roughly 30% lower fuel burn than a comparable light jet, while offering a stand-up, cabin-class pressurized cabin (6.1 ft wide, 5.8 ft tall, 14.9 ft long, 393 cu ft). The pusher configuration places the propellers behind the cabin, yielding a quiet forward cabin and unobstructed forward visibility. Production has been consistently low-volume (roughly 250 airframes built across all variants), and the aircraft flies almost exclusively with corporate, charter, and air-ambulance operators — private owner-flown Avantis exist but are rare due to type-rating and insurance hurdles.

Piaggio Aerospace declared insolvency on 22 November 2018 following the withdrawal of Abu Dhabi's Mubadala, and the company spent more than six years in Italian extraordinary administration. On 27 December 2024 Turkey's Baykar acquired Piaggio Aerospace, with the preliminary business transfer signed 27 January 2025. As of 2026 the FAA has published ADs under the "Baykar Piaggio Aerospace S.p.A." type-certificate holder name, indicating the type certificate has formally transferred. Production of new EVOs under Baykar ownership has not yet resumed at meaningful volume, but parts and engineering support have stabilized.

Performance

Book numbers for the Avanti II / EVO show 402 KTAS maximum cruise at FL310 at mid-weights — this is genuinely achievable and makes the Avanti the fastest certified turboprop in production, faster than a King Air 350 by about 90 knots and within striking distance of a Citation CJ1. Long-range cruise is around 315 KTAS and yields the advertised 1,500 nm NBAA IFR range. Real-world operators typically see 370-395 KTAS high-speed cruise block numbers.

Fuel burn at max cruise is roughly 76 GPH total (about 38 GPH per side), rising to 95+ GPH during climb. At long-range cruise this drops to around 55 GPH. Compared with a Citation CJ2 flying the same mission, the Avanti burns roughly 25-35% less fuel for similar trip times on legs under 1,000 nm.

The three-surface configuration gives the Avanti exceptional low-drag cruise, but it also means the wing is small (172 sq ft) and highly loaded — approach speeds are jet-like (Vref around 115-120 KIAS at typical landing weights), and the aircraft does not like short or contaminated runways. The pusher props are also susceptible to FOD from rough surfaces, and the forward canard (which carries flaps) stalls first by design to provide natural pitch-down stall protection, which pilots describe as remarkably benign despite the aircraft's performance envelope.

Payload & Range

At max fuel (422 gal / 2,830 lb), the Avanti II has roughly 895 lb of cabin payload — approximately four 200-lb occupants with light bags. This supports the full 1,500 nm NBAA IFR range.

At full seats (6 executive + crew of two = roughly 1,600 lb of people with bags), fuel must be reduced by about 700 lb (roughly 104 gal), dropping useful fuel to about 318 gal. This still yields roughly 1,100-1,200 nm NBAA range, which covers most typical business mission pairs (New York to Miami, LA to Denver, Chicago to Dallas).

The Avanti's payload-range envelope is one of its most attractive features: unlike light jets in the same price class, it rarely forces an uncomfortable tradeoff between seats and range on realistic business missions. The main tradeoff is runway — the 3,400 ft balanced field length rules out many smaller general aviation airports that a King Air or Pilatus PC-12 could comfortably use.

Mission Suitability

Business travel (10) — this is the Avanti's core design mission. Pressurized stand-up cabin, 6-8 executive seats, lavatory, 400+ KTAS cruise, FL410 ceiling, and jet-competitive trip times with substantially lower fuel burn. Ramp presence is unmatched. See Business Travel.

Cross-country (9) — 1,500 nm NBAA range with reserves covers most domestic US city pairs nonstop, and the FL410 ceiling keeps the aircraft above most weather. Scored below 10 only because range falls short of transcontinental US nonstop at max cruise. See Cross-Country Flying.

Cargo hauling (3) — 3,700 lb useful load is respectable but the cabin door and interior are optimized for passengers, not freight, and a few aircraft have been converted to air-ambulance/medevac configurations with reasonable success.

Flight training, backcountry, aerobatics, local fun (1-2) — all disqualified. Type rating required, 3,000+ hour insurance minimums, six-figure annual operating costs, and a pressurized cabin-class turboprop is absurd for any of these missions.

Surveying (2) — too fast, too expensive, and sensor mounting on a pusher configuration is awkward.

Avionics Ecosystem

Original Avanti (1990-2005): Most came with Collins Pro Line II analog/EFIS hybrid panels. A significant fraction have been upgraded to Pro Line 21 or Garmin G600 TXi retrofits to maintain ADS-B Out compliance and FANS/CPDLC capability for international operations.

Avanti II (2005-2014): Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 integrated avionics standard, three-tube PFD/MFD, dual FMS, integrated TCAS II, TAWS-B, weather radar. WAAS/LPV capability added mid-production; pre-WAAS aircraft command a discount.

Avanti EVO: Pro Line 21 with enhanced graphics, synthetic vision (SVS), enhanced vision (EVS) optional, ADS-B Out standard. Some EVOs have been delivered with Pro Line Fusion cockpits.

STCs & Modifications

The STC ecosystem for the Avanti is thin compared with Kingairs or Citations because of the low fleet size. Notable items:

  • Five-blade MT composite props — retrofit available for original Avantis; reduces cabin noise and ground noise footprint substantially. Install cost roughly $200k.
  • Winglets — factory on EVO, retrofit STC available for earlier airframes (~$150k).
  • ADS-B Out / WAAS GPS upgrades — required for US operation; typical install $75k-$150k depending on baseline equipment.
  • Interior refurbishment — full cabin refurb runs $250k-$600k through specialty shops (Duncan, Elliott, Western Aircraft).
  • Medevac conversion — several Avantis have been converted for air-ambulance service; the wide flat-floor cabin accommodates two stretchers plus medical crew.

Maintenance & Support

Parts availability: fair. During 2018-2024 administration the factory parts pipeline was intermittent and several operators resorted to parts pooling and PMA sourcing. As of 2026, under Baykar, parts support has stabilized but remains less predictable than King Air or Citation. Single-source Piaggio-specific components (canard skins, fuselage structures, nacelle parts) can have multi-week lead times.

Mechanic familiarity: specialist. Only a handful of shops in the US have meaningful Avanti expertise — notably Epps Aviation (Atlanta), Western Aircraft (Boise), and select FlightSafety-partnered MROs. Routine line maintenance can be done by any Part 145 turboprop shop familiar with PT6A, but any structural, pressurization, or three-surface aerodynamic work should go to a specialist.

Cost baseline (Liberty Jet, Aircraft Cost Calculator): Total annual operating budget around $668,000 at 200 flight hours/year and around $1,020,000 at 400 hours/year. This includes fuel, maintenance reserves, crew, insurance, hangar, training, and engine reserves. Direct operating cost (fuel + maintenance reserves) is roughly $1,800-$2,200/hour. Engine status drives a disproportionate share of value on early airframes. PT6A-66/66B TBO is 3,600 hours and hot-section inspection at 1,800 hours; each engine overhaul runs $400k-$500k. Two engines approaching overhaul can easily swing a $1.5M airframe's value by $400k-$700k. The Piaggio Aerospace insolvency (2018-2024) depressed used values because of parts-supply uncertainty; the Baykar acquisition in December 2024 and subsequent return of factory support has begun to stabilize and modestly lift prices through 2025-2026.

The Avanti has a substantial AD history that prospective buyers must understand. Recent FAA ADs (2020-2026) include:

  • Nose landing gear steering select/bypass valve sealing (2020)
  • Fuselage lower skin corrosion — inner/outer skin panels in the cabin belly area (2022)
  • Air data computer / standby altimetry errors (2022)
  • Horizontal tail trim actuator fitting corrosion-induced cracking (2023)

  • Vertical stabilizer corrosion and cracking (2026, issued under the Baykar Piaggio Aerospace TC)

The 2026 vertical stab corrosion AD is the most significant recent item and should be a pre-buy focus. Corrosion in general is the Avanti's chief airframe concern — the complex three-surface structure, composite/metal interfaces, and sealed pressure vessel make moisture intrusion hard to detect until it is serious. Other recurring issues include pusher-prop FOD damage, exhaust stack cracking on PT6A installations, and landing gear actuator wear. Pre-buy inspections should be performed by a Piaggio-authorized service center (not a general turboprop shop) and should include thorough inspection of the fuselage belly, horizontal stab, vertical stab, and engine nacelle structures.

Insurance Profile

  • FlightSafety initial + recurrent (FlightSafety is the only approved training provider)
  • 3,000 total time, 1,500 ME/turbine, 100 in type for standard "qualified pilot" rates

  • Liability only ($1M): $12,000-$17,000/year for qualified pilots
  • Hull + $1M liability: 1.0-1.5% of hull value for experienced single-pilot-owner, 1.5-2.5% for low-time/shared/fractional operations

On a $2.5M Avanti II, that translates to roughly $27,000-$50,000/year hull-plus-liability total. On a $6M EVO, $65,000-$120,000/year. Low-time owner-pilots will struggle to get bound at all without several hundred hours of mentor pilot time post-type-rating.
