Overview
The Pilatus PC-12 is a single-engine pressurized turboprop built in Stans, Switzerland, and is the benchmark owner-flown turbine in general aviation. Announced at NBAA 1989, it received Swiss certification on March 30, 1994, and FAA certification on July 15, 1994. With more than 2,000 airframes delivered (the 1,000th in June 2010), it is the best-selling pressurized single-engine turboprop in history. It combines a 330-cubic-foot King Air-class cabin, a signature aft cargo door, a 10,450 lb MTOW, single-pilot certification, and a PT6A up front. Owner-flown business operators, Part 135 charters (PlaneSense, Surf Air, Tradewind), fractionals, cargo feeders, EMS, skydiving operators, and military ISR users (U-28A) all fly it. It is frequently called "the Suburban of the sky" for its combination of payload, range, unimproved-field capability, and cabin versatility. Legacy PC-12 (/41, /45, /47) airframes are commonly referred to collectively as "Legacy PC-12." The PC-12 NG and NGX share the -47E type designation but are materially different powerplants.
Performance
Book cruise figures vary materially by variant: the Legacy PC-12/45 trues about 260 KTAS at FL260, the NG about 280 KTAS at FL280, and the NGX 290 KTAS at FL280. Real-world owner-reported block speeds are typically 10-15 knots below book because PC-12s are often flown LRC (long-range cruise) at 240-260 KTAS for ~45 gph fuel burn. At max cruise the PT6A-67P/67XP burns 66-72 gph of Jet-A; LRC drops that to the mid-40s. The cabin is pressurized to 5.75 psi, producing an 8,000 ft cabin at FL260 and ~10,000 ft at FL300 (the service ceiling). Hot-and-high performance is excellent because the PT6A is flat-rated to 1,845 SHP thermodynamically and derated to 1,200 SHP, leaving substantial margin on hot days. The PC-12 is not a short-field airplane by bush standards (~2,500 ft over a 50 ft obstacle at MTOW), but it can operate from unimproved 3,000 ft strips and is widely used for backcountry base-camp operations by owners who would otherwise fly a daher-kodiak-100. Single-engine climb rate at MTOW is 1,920 fpm, and service ceiling is 30,000 ft with certified RVSM in the NG/NGX.
Payload & Range
The PC-12's "big single" reputation comes from a genuinely jet-class useful load. Representative scenarios (PC-12 NGX, 10,450 lb MTOW, 6,173 lb BEW, 4,277 lb useful load):
- Full fuel (2,704 lb / 402 gal): 1,573 lb remaining for cabin — ~7 adults with bags (200 lb + 30 lb each), or 4 adults with 600 lb of cargo. Range: 1,803 nm with NBAA reserves at LRC.
- Five adults + bags (1,150 lb): 3,127 lb fuel (465 gal — tank limited to 402 gal usable / 2,704 lb). Fuel-limited, not payload-limited. 1,700+ nm range.
- Max payload (2,236 lb, 9-10 adults + bags): ~2,041 lb fuel remaining (304 gal), ~1,250 nm range at LRC.
- Zero-fuel weight limit (9,921 lb): Hard cap on cabin payload regardless of tank capacity — prevents wing root over-stress. Well-loaded charter configurations are usually ZFW-limited.
- Cargo role (seats removed, pallet floor): ~3,300 lb of cargo and 1,000 nm range. A single pallet of freight.
The PC-12 is one of very few singles that can genuinely fly 4 passengers and full bags 1,500+ nm non-stop while cruising above the weather. Compare to daher-tbm, which is faster (330 KTAS) but carries about 1,000 lb less useful load and has a smaller cabin; beechcraft-king-air-90-200, which offers twin-engine redundancy but burns nearly twice the fuel; and cessna-208-caravan / daher-kodiak-100, which are unpressurized and far slower but trade altitude and speed for true backcountry capability.
Mission Suitability
- Business travel (10): This is the PC-12's core mission. Jet-class cabin, 1,800 nm range, FL300 pressurized operation, and single-pilot certification with no type rating make it the quintessential owner-flown business turbine. Five passengers with bags can fly coast-to-coast with one fuel stop.
- Cross-country (10): 290 KTAS NGX, 1,803 nm max range, pressurized, and with weather radar, TAWS, and TCAS standard in NG/NGX. Truly continental capability.
- Cargo hauling (9): The signature aft cargo door (53" x 52") accepts standard LD3 freight, engines, or a pallet. Feeder operators (Boutique Air, FedEx Feeder) use the PC-12 heavily. 2,236 lb max payload with zero fuel is class-leading in a single.
- Surveying/ISR (8): Long loiter endurance (6+ hours), high service ceiling, large belly pod or cabin-mounted sensor options, and proven military ISR pedigree (U-28A Draco). Lower cabin altitude eases operator fatigue on long missions.
- Backcountry (6): Capable on 3,000+ ft hardpack or grass but not a true bush airplane: trailing-link gear survives firm unimproved fields, but turboprop operating costs and tire wear discourage frequent dirt operations. Runway length penalty is steeper than daher-kodiak-100 or cessna-208-caravan.
- Surveying/aerial work (8): Long endurance and stable platform. Sensor STCs (Wescam MX-15/MX-20, cabin optical ports) are well-established.
- Local fun (3): Owners do fly them for $200 hamburgers, but $1,200-per-hour DOCs, maintenance complexity, and hangar footprint make this a poor mission fit.
- Flight training (2): Only as transition/initial turbine training for owner-flown operators through SimCom or Flight Safety; not a primary trainer.
- Aerobatics (1): Disqualified. Normal category commuter certification.
Avionics Ecosystem
The PC-12's panel is heavily variant-dependent and is the single largest driver of resale value within a given year band:
- Legacy PC-12/41-/45 (pre-2005): Bendix/King EFIS-40/42 two-tube EADI+EHSI with round-gauge backup, KFC-325 autopilot. Upgradable but most shops now point owners at panel swaps rather than piecemeal upgrades.
- PC-12/45 and /47 (2005-2008): Meggitt Magic 1500/2000 glass retrofit was a common mid-life upgrade. GTN 750/650 navigators are almost universal in well-maintained examples. ADS-B Out compliance is standard on well-kept aircraft.
- PC-12 NG (2008-2019): Honeywell Primus Apex four-display glass deck standard — two 10" PFDs and two 10" MFDs, integrated FMS, SVS, weather radar, TCAS II, TAWS-B, and a digital autopilot. Apex shares architecture with the Gulfstream G450 panel. Upgrades to 4-axis autopilot and ESP (Emergency Descent Mode) arrived progressively.
- PC-12 NGX (2019+): Apex with autothrottle, tactile Advanced Cockpit Environment (ACE) pilot controls, Emergency Descent Mode, predictive windshear, and cabin management via touchscreen. The PT6E-67XP FADEC eliminates start/shutdown workload and automatically manages engine limits. ESP and auto-throttle are standard.

- Finnoff Aviation PT6A-67P upgrade — Most impactful legacy STC. Converts PC-12/45 or /47 from the -67B to the -67P engine, yielding ~15 knot cruise gain, faster climb, and better hot/high margin. Install cost ~$450,000-600,000 (engine + labor), typically done at overhaul. Adds $200,000-300,000 resale value.
- Finnoff winglets / Raisbeck winglets — Available for Legacy PC-12 and NG; reduces fuel burn and adds short-field performance. Install ~$120,000.

- Parts: Excellent. Pilatus factory support is considered the gold standard in GA; spares ship from Broomfield, Colorado (Pilatus Business Aircraft) within 24-48 hours. Rotables are expensive but available.
- Mechanic familiarity: Specialist. The PC-12 requires a Pilatus-authorized service center for most major work (annual, phase inspections, AD compliance). There are ~30 factory-authorized service centers in North America (Western Aircraft, Cutter, Epps, Stevens, Banyan, Pilatus Business Aircraft Broomfield, etc.). - PC-12/41 (1994-1996): $1.5M-$2.0M. Oldest airframes, often with analog panels and mid-time engines. Buyer pool is price-sensitive charter operators.
- PC-12/45 (1997-2005): $2.0M-$3.0M. Sweet spot for first-time owner-flown buyers; Finnoff/Blackhawk upgrades materially change valuation.
- PC-12/47 (2006-2008): $2.8M-$3.8M. Higher MTOW and more modern airframe systems.
- PC-12 NG (2008-2019): $3.5M-$5.5M. Primus Apex glass is the step-change, and NG airframes command a sharp premium. Late-model (2017-2019) NGs with low hours and ESP cross $5M.

- PT6A hot-section and CT-blade inspections: The PT6A-67B/67P has a 3,500 hr TBO (4,000 hr for the PT6E-67XP with FADEC credit), with a mid-life hot-section inspection at 1,750 hr typically costing $85,000-150,000. Missed HSIs and CT blade distress are the most common pre-buy findings.
- Cracked torque tubes (elevator trim actuator): Multiple AD-driven inspections on elevator/rudder trim torque tubes — cracks traced to reduced-wall-thickness manufacturing lots. Recurring inspection or terminating replacement.
- Cargo door frame cracks: AD requires inspection of forward/aft cargo door frame lightening holes; affected frames receive doubler reinforcement. Well-known recurring item, inexpensive to resolve.
- Stall Warning Protection System (SWPS) inadvertent activation: FAA proposed AD on select PC-12/47E fleets after reports of uncommanded SWPS engagement.
