Overview
The Mitsubishi MU-2 is a high-wing, pressurized twin turboprop designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and produced from 1965 through 1986, with 704 airframes built across 13 variants. First flown in September 1963, it was Japan's most commercially successful postwar aircraft and one of the fastest twin turboprops ever certified under Part 23/CAR 3 — a late-model Marquise cruises at 305+ KTAS, outrunning many cabin-class turboprops and matching the performance of much newer and more expensive aircraft.
The MU-2 is distinguished by its high wing, spoilers for roll control (instead of ailerons), double-slotted full-span flaps, tip tanks, and Garrett/Honeywell TPE331 turboprops. It earned a reputation as a "hot" airplane with an unforgiving flight regime, particularly asymmetric-thrust handling, which led to a troubled accident record in the 1970s-90s. That reputation drove the FAA to impose SFAR 108, which made type-specific initial and recurrent training mandatory for every pilot in command. The fleet's accident rate dropped dramatically post-SFAR and is now below the business-turboprop average.
Today the MU-2 appeals to owner-operators and small charter outfits who want near-King-Air speed and payload at a fraction of the acquisition cost, and who are willing to accept the training burden and specialist maintenance. See business-travel and cross-country for mission fit.
Variants & History
The MU-2 family splits cleanly into short body (33 ft 3 in fuselage, 7-8 pax) and long body (39 ft 5 in fuselage, 9-11 pax). All are designated MU-2B-xx under the type certificate, but each has a Mitsubishi marketing name.

The Solitaire and Marquise are the most desirable variants by a wide margin: both use the same dash-10 TPE331-10-501M engines (flat-rated differently), 4-blade Hartzell props, improved systems, and higher useful loads. Earlier airframes are cheaper to buy but suffer from older engines with lower TBOs and harder parts support.
Performance
Book numbers don't flatter the MU-2 — real-world numbers do. A well-flown Marquise will true 300-315 KTAS in the high teens to low 20s at ~90 gph total burn, and will climb to FL250 in roughly 10 minutes at gross. Single-engine rate of climb at gross is a genuine 410 fpm on the Marquise, which is better than most cabin-class twins.
The MU-2's wing is small and highly loaded (about 58 lb/ft²), which is why it's so fast and why approach speeds are high: Vref is typically 120 KIAS clean and around 100 KIAS with full flaps. The full-span double-slotted flaps are essential to bring approach speed into sanity, and a flap failure is a genuine emergency — one of the scenarios SFAR 108 training drills hard. Spoilers-for-roll mean there is no adverse yaw, but roll rate is modest and the airplane will not fly slowly with any grace.
Density altitude has modest effect relative to piston twins because the TPE331s are flat-rated and stay flat to well above sea level, but takeoff distance climbs quickly at gross on hot days because wing loading is high.
Payload & Range
Using the Marquise (MU-2B-60) as the reference airframe:

- 9 pax + bags (1,800 lbs) + IFR reserves: ~900 nm still-air range at 300 KTAS — a 3-hour leg at jet speeds.
- 4 pax + full fuel: Full book range of 1,395 nm; 4.5 hours at 305 KTAS.
- 2 pax + cargo + tankered fuel: The airplane is genuinely useful as a 1,500-lb freighter over 1,000 nm legs.
The MU-2's payload-range is competitive with a King Air B200 at roughly half the acquisition cost and meaningfully lower fuel burn — the tradeoffs are the training burden, specialist maintenance, and narrower buyer pool at resale.
Mission Suitability
- Business travel (9/10): This is the MU-2's reason to exist. 300+ KTAS, pressurized to 6 psi (8,000 ft cabin at FL250), 1,395 nm range, 9 seats in the Marquise, full IFR/known-ice. Owner-operators routinely do 600-900 nm business legs at jet-competitive block times and turboprop fuel burns. See business-travel.
- Cross-country (9/10): Range, speed, pressurization, and ice protection make it an exceptional long-range cruiser. Only knock is limited weather radar capability on many airframes unless upgraded. See cross-country.
- Cargo hauling (8/10): 1,800+ lbs of payload with full fuel on the Marquise, a large aft cargo door on freighter-converted airframes, and a long, square cabin make it a capable small-package freighter. Several operators still run MU-2s on check-running and auto-parts routes. See cargo-hauling.
- Surveying (6/10): Good altitude and speed, but high wing loading limits low-and-slow work. Better suited to high-altitude mapping than low-level geophysical.
- Flight training (1/10), Local fun (2/10), Aerobatics (1/10), Backcountry (2/10): Wrong tool. SFAR 108 precludes casual training use, wing loading and approach speeds preclude rough strips, and operating costs preclude $100 hamburgers.
Avionics Ecosystem
Factory panels were Collins Pro Line or Bendix/King Silver Crown/Gold Crown twin-nav installs with RCA/Bendix weather radar. Most Marquise/Solitaire airframes still flying today have been partially or fully modernized:
- Entry tier ($0-50k panel upgrades): Legacy Collins Pro Line 1/2, King KFC-300 autopilot, steam gauges, ADS-B Out via GTX 335 or GDL 82. These airframes are often the cheapest on the market ($275-450k).
- Mid tier ($100-200k panel upgrades): Garmin GTN 750/650 navigators, GI 275 instruments, WAAS, Stormscope, weather datalink via GDL 69/FS 510. Original autopilot retained. Typical mid-book airframes.
- Top tier ($300-500k panel upgrades): Full Garmin G600 TXi PFD/MFD suite, dual GTN 750Xi, GFC 600 autopilot retrofit, engine data monitoring. A handful of Marquises have received these upgrades and command significant premiums.
STCs & Modifications
- Garmin GFC 600 autopilot STC: Approved for MU-2 Marquise/Solitaire; replaces aging Sperry/Collins autopilots and restores dispatch reliability. $120-160k installed.
- Winglets: No major approved winglet STC (spoiler roll control complicates retrofits).
- Intertrade-type engine upgrades: The dash-10 engines are already the most powerful TPE331 variant installed in the MU-2; no power upgrade STCs are active.
- Cargo door conversion: Several airframes were converted with a large aft cargo door for freight ops; this adds useful load flexibility but reduces resale to personal/business owners.
- RVSM compliance upgrades: Required for operation FL290-FL410; many Marquises are RVSM-equipped but some are not — significant buy-factor.
Maintenance & Support
Parts and technical support are handled by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America (MHIA) out of Addison, Texas, which maintains the only factory-authorized new-parts inventory and vendor network. - Service centers: A small number of specialist shops handle MU-2 heavy maintenance — Intercontinental Jet Service (Tulsa), Turbine Aircraft Services (Addison), Epps Aviation (Atlanta), and a few others. Carolina Turbine Support (CTS) and similar smaller shops do line work. Random piston-twin shops should be avoided.
- Annual inspection: Phased 100/200 hour inspections under the MU-2B inspection program, plus annual. Realistic annual costs range $25-60k depending on discrepancies, plus ~$15-30k of scheduled engine maintenance accruals per year.
- Hourly operating cost: $150/hr bare maintenance (direct parts/labor on routine inspections) is achievable per owner reports; all-in direct operating cost including fuel, engine reserves, and maintenance is $1,200-1,800/hr. Fully loaded (fixed + variable) at 300 hours/year runs $250k-350k/year.
- Fuel burn: ~90 gph total (45 per side) at high cruise; ~80 gph at long-range cruise.
- Expensive items: TPE331 HSIs ($45-60k/side), prop overhauls ($15-25k/side), landing gear overhauls, spoiler rigging, pressurization system work.
- Mechanic familiarity: Specialist only — do not attempt to maintain at a general piston-twin shop.

Valuation Factors
- Model: Marquise > Solitaire > earlier long-body (N, L, J) > earlier short-body (P, M, K) > pre-stretch (F, D, B). A Marquise trades at roughly 1.5-2x an equivalently-timed earlier long-body.
- Engine time: Dash-10 TPE331s have a 5,400-hour TBO (with HSI at 1,800 and 3,600). Engines mid-time vs. zero-SMOH swing Marquise prices by $200-400k. Full overhaul cost is approximately $193,500 per side for a TPE331-10.
- Hot section status: HSI done/not-done is a major negotiation point; budget ~$45-60k per side at the 3,600-hour HSI.
- RVSM compliance and ADS-B Out: Non-RVSM airframes discount $50-100k.
- Panel modernization: Garmin GTN/G600 panels add $100-250k over steam-gauge equivalents.
- Logs and records: MU-2s are records-sensitive; complete MHIA-tracked life-limited parts records are essential.
- Current market (2026): Solitaires trade $275-550k; Marquises trade $450-950k with standout low-time, late-serial airframes approaching $1M. Average listed Mitsubishi turboprop ~$662k.

ADs & Common Problems
- SFAR 108 (2008, updated 2016): Not an AD but a binding special regulation. Mandatory type-specific initial (12 hr flight / 20 hr ground), requalification (8/12), and annual recurrent (4/8) training. Autopilot use required for most single-pilot ops. This is the single most defining compliance item on the airplane. See AOPA.
- Wing attach bolts / spar inspections: Recurring inspection requirements per the Service Life Limits document; compliance is tracked by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America (MHIA).
- Spoiler actuator and linkage wear: The spoiler roll system has tight rigging tolerances and is a common squawk; out-of-rig airplanes fly poorly.
- Flap system: Double-slotted flaps are complex and a key inspection item; asymmetric flap deployment is a known failure mode and SFAR training scenario.
- Tip tank corrosion: Integral tip tanks are a corrosion hotspot on coastal airframes.
- Landing gear / trunnion cracks: Several SBs/ADs over the years on main and nose gear components.
- TPE331 negative torque sensing (NTS) system: Critical for engine-failure handling; functional checks are a pre-flight and maintenance priority.
Pre-SFAR (1988-2008) the fleet saw 80 accidents with 40 fatalities over 20 years; post-SFAR the rate fell to approximately 0.75 per 100,000 flight hours, roughly half the business-turboprop average (Aviation Safety Magazine).
Insurance Profile
The MU-2 has a deserved reputation as a high-scrutiny insurance risk, but the post-SFAR accident record has improved underwriting materially. Since roughly 2006 the fleet has enjoyed the lowest accident rate in its class, and carriers have reopened to well-qualified pilots.
Underwriting factors specific to the MU-2:
- Pilot experience: Minimum 1,500 TT, 500 ME, 100 in type typically required for full-limit liability. Low-time owner-operators often cannot get coverage at any price without a mentor-pilot requirement or a second crewmember.
- SFAR 108 compliance: Non-negotiable. Carriers require proof of initial and annual recurrent from an SFAR-approved provider (Reece Howell, SimCom, etc.).
- Hull value: $450k-950k typical on Marquise.
- Annual premium range: $10,000 on the low end (experienced, mid-hull, pleasure/business use) to $26,000+ on the high end (high hull, less experienced, commercial use). Typical Marquise owner-operator ~$15-20k/year.
- Liability: $1M smooth is standard; $2-5M limits available for experienced pilots but expensive.
