Overview

The Turbo Commander family is a line of pressurized, high-wing, cabin-class twin turboprops that traces its lineage to Ted Smith's original Aero Commander 500 of the early 1950s. The turbine-powered models began with the Aero Commander 680T in 1964-65, which mated the classic high-wing Commander airframe to a pair of Garrett (now Honeywell) TPE331 turboprops. The family was manufactured successively by Aero Commander, North American Rockwell, Rockwell International, and finally Gulfstream Aerospace — with Gulfstream re-branding the line the "Jetprop Commander" in the late 1970s before production ended in 1985. Total production across all Turbo Commander and Jetprop variants approached 1,100 airframes, with roughly 138 early 680T/V/W, 72 of the 681 Hawk Commander, and the balance consisting of the 690/690A/690B/690C/690D and 695/695A/695B Jetprops.

Twin Commanders earned a reputation as some of the fastest, best-handling cabin-class piston-turbine twins ever built. The high wing affords panoramic cabin visibility, excellent stability, low cabin noise (engines outboard of the fuselage), and easy ramp access. With 270-300+ knot cruise at FL280-FL310, 5-7 passenger pressurized comfort, and the unbreakable TPE331, the type was popular with owner-flown businesses, charter operators, aerial survey firms (NOAA operated several), and government agencies. Today the active fleet is supported by Twin Commander Aircraft LLC (now an Ontic company, headquartered in Creedmoor, NC with operations in Arlington, WA) via a worldwide network of nine Factory Authorized Service Centers and the "Grand Renaissance" factory upgrade program that can return 40+ year old airframes to nearly-new condition with modern avionics, paint, interior, and structural refurbishment.

The Turbo Commander competes conceptually with the beechcraft-king-air-90 and beechcraft-king-air-200, but delivers noticeably higher cruise speeds for comparable horsepower and has a much smaller installed base. Primary frontmatter reflects the 690B as the fleet-representative variant. The 695A/Jetprop 1000 is the performance ceiling of the family: 308 KTAS max cruise, 2,080 nm range, 35,000 ft ceiling, 2,802 fpm ROC, 985 fpm single-engine ROC, 4,008 lb useful load on 11,200 lb MTOW.

Performance

Turbo Commanders are genuinely fast for their horsepower class. A 690B routinely delivers 275-285 KTAS at FL250-FL280 burning about 75 gph total, and a Jetprop 1000 will see 290-300 KTAS at comparable fuel flow thanks to the -10 engine's better specific fuel consumption and the longer-span wing. By comparison a King Air C90B of similar horsepower cruises around 225-240 KTAS. The speed advantage comes from the clean high-wing configuration with engines faired into the wing and from the well-designed nacelle/wing junction.

The TPE331 is a single-shaft (direct-drive) engine — throttle response is immediate (unlike the free-turbine PT6), which makes for brisk takeoff acceleration and decisive go-around performance, but also demands careful power management to avoid over-temps. Start sequencing is more involved than a PT6; mismanaged starts can result in hot starts and expensive hot-section damage. Type-specific training is essential.

Real-world range with IFR reserves on a 690B is about 1,100-1,200 nm at long-range cruise (240 KTAS at FL280); the 695A/1000 will exceed 1,800 nm LRC. Single-engine service ceiling is comfortable (14,000-18,000 ft depending on weight and variant), allowing terrain clearance on one engine across most of the continental US. The aircraft is certificated for flight into known icing and equipped with boots, heated props, and hot windshield panels.

Handling is universally praised — light, harmonized controls, benign stall characteristics, and excellent single-engine manners for a pressurized twin. Runway performance is very good for the category: a 690B clears 50 ft in about 2,260 ft at gross weight, sea level, standard day.

Payload & Range

The Turbo Commander is one of the more balanced payload-range performers in its class because the high-wing layout keeps the wing structurally efficient and the big fuel capacity (384 gal on the 690B, 482 gal on the 1000) supports long legs.

690B example (3,463 lb useful load, 2,573 lb max fuel):

  • Full fuel: 890 lbs remaining for crew + pax + bags — roughly pilot plus 4 adults and light bags, or 5 pax with severe weight restrictions. Range ~1,200 nm IFR with reserves.
  • Pilot + 5 pax (1,200 lbs payload): ~2,263 lbs fuel (~338 gal) — range ~900-1,000 nm.
  • Pilot + 6 pax (1,400 lbs payload): ~2,063 lbs fuel (~308 gal) — range ~800-900 nm.

695A/Jetprop 1000 example (4,008 lb useful load, 482 gal max):

  • Full fuel: ~775 lbs remaining — pilot plus 3-4 adults. Range ~2,000+ nm.
  • Pilot + 6 pax (1,400 lbs payload): ~2,600 lbs fuel (~388 gal) — range ~1,500-1,700 nm at LRC. This is the "ideal" mission profile.

The airplane is rarely weight-limited for typical business travel missions (3-5 people, moderate bags, 600-1,000 nm legs); most operators fly it "tanks full plus what fits." Compared to a King Air C90B, the 690B carries similar payload at 40-50 KTAS higher cruise and similar fuel burn — the fundamental efficiency argument for the type.

Mission Suitability

  • Business travel (9/10): This is what the Turbo Commander was built for. Pressurized cabin, 270-300 KTAS cruise, FL280+ capability to fly above most weather, 5-7 passenger capacity, club seating, enclosed lav in later variants, and a lower cost of entry than a King Air. See business-travel.
  • Cross-country (9/10): 1,100-1,800+ nm range, fast block speeds, and known-ice capability make long trips practical. FL280-FL310 operation unlocks favorable winds and weather avoidance. See cross-country.
  • Cargo hauling (7/10): 3,400-4,000 lb useful load and a reasonably wide cabin (though access via a narrow airstair door limits bulky freight). Several have been converted for specialized cargo/survey missions. See cargo-hauling.
  • Surveying (6/10): High wing affords unobstructed downward visibility; NOAA and USGS operated 690-series for weather research and mapping. Long endurance supports multi-hour survey lines. Cabin floor provisions for camera ports are possible via STC.
  • Flight training (1/10): Type-specific, high insurance, high fuel burn, and TPE331 start management complexity make this unsuitable for primary instruction. Owner-pilot type-specific training is mandatory (Simcom, FlightSafety, Twin Commander University).
  • Backcountry (2/10): Not designed for unimproved strips despite decent runway performance; sensitive prop clearance and turboprop FOD concerns rule out gravel/grass operations in owner-pilot hands.
  • Aerobatics (1/10): Not approved; pressurized cabin, complex systems, and category restrictions prohibit.
  • Local fun (2/10): Overkill and expensive to operate for the $100 hamburger. Warm-up, cool-down, and hot-section cycle costs discourage casual flying.

Avionics Ecosystem

Factory panels in the 1970s-80s were typically Collins Pro Line or King KFC-series autopilots with dual VHF nav/com, ADF, DME, and analog flight instruments — long since obsolete for modern airspace.

Typical panel configurations by price tier today (see avionics-pricing):

  • Entry tier ($425k-600k): Original Collins/King steam-gauge panel, possibly with a single Garmin GNS/GTN 650 added, Stormscope, analog AP. ADS-B Out retrofit (Garmin GTX 345 or similar). Buyer assumes upgrade cost of $150k-300k to bring panel current.
  • Mid tier ($600k-950k): Dual GTN 750, single or dual Garmin G600/G600 TXi PFD/MFD retrofit, modern digital autopilot (S-TEC 2100 or Garmin GFC 600), engine trend monitoring (Shadin/Garmin), traffic (GTS 800/825), SVT.
  • Upper tier ($950k-1.5M+): Garmin G950/G1000 NXi full glass retrofit via the Twin Commander Grand Renaissance program, Garmin GFC 600 autopilot, synthetic vision, radar (Garmin GWX 80), satellite weather, CPDLC-capable datalink. Renaissance-refurbished examples command $1.5M-3M.

The Grand Renaissance program, offered by Twin Commander Aircraft LLC, is unique in the GA world: a factory-supported "zero-time airframe" refurbishment that strips the airplane to bare metal, inspects every structural member, replaces time-limited components, and delivers a fully rebuilt, re-painted, re-interiored, re-avionics'd airplane with a fresh airworthiness certificate essentially.

STCs & Modifications

  • Dash-10 engine upgrade (Renaissance Power): Swap -5 engines for TPE331-10 engines, yielding ~290+ KTAS cruise, 35,000 ft ceiling, and longer TBO intervals. Installation cost $700k-1.2M but transforms a 690B into near-1000 performance.
  • Winglets (Jetprop 840/900/980/1000 style): Factory on Gulfstream variants, retrofit STC available for earlier 690s. Range and climb improvement of ~3-5%.
  • Dash-10 hot section extension (HSE) / Dash-5 overhaul extension: Approved inspection programs extend TBO from 3,000 to 5,400 hours between major overhauls for TPE331-10 when operated on a condition monitoring program.
  • Cargo door conversion: Limited STCs for survey/freight operators.

  • Type certificate holder: Twin Commander Aircraft LLC (Creedmoor, NC, with operations at 19010 59th Dr NE, Arlington, WA), owned by Ontic since 2021. Actively supports the fleet with parts, engineering, and the Grand Renaissance program.
  • Factory Authorized Service Centers: Nine worldwide, including Byerly Aviation (Peoria, IL), Eagle Creek Aviation Services (Indianapolis, IN — also hosts the factory-authorized maintenance training school), Naples Jet Center, and others. Factory Authorized status is meaningful here: type-specific tooling and knowledge are essential.
  • Parts availability: Good for airframe-unique parts via Twin Commander LLC and third-party sources (Byerly Parts, Aero-Mach). Some long-lead items for very early 680T/V/W variants can be challenging. Honeywell/TPE331 support is excellent and long-term (the engine powers many in-production aircraft).
  • Mechanic familiarity: Specialist — a typical field A&P is not qualified; an authorized service center or a shop with Twin Commander experience is required for annuals and AD compliance.
  • Annual inspection cost: $25,000-45,000 base for a routine annual; $75,000-150,000+ when spar inspections, hot sections, or deferred items come due.
  • Total annual operating cost: $180,000-350,000 owner-flown at 200-300 hours/year. Jetprop 1000 at 450 hours/year approaches $1M+ on a fully-loaded program basis.

Valuation Factors

  • Engine time: TPE331 overhauls run $300k-400k per engine. Engines at mid-time (1,500-2,500 hours SMOH) are preferred; engines near TBO discount the airplane by $350k-600k versus freshly-overhauled examples. Engines on a maintenance program (MSP Gold, JSSI) command a $150k-250k premium.
  • Hot section status: A fresh hot section adds $75k-125k per side.

ADs & Common Problems

  • AD 94-04-17 (supersedes AD 91-08-09), Wing Spar Lower Cap Corrosion: Repetitive inspections of the wing front spar lower cap per Twin Commander Service Bulletin 208A on 500, 680, 681, 685, and 690 series. Three terminating-action modification options (spar cap replacement or reinforcement kit).
