Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. The Mooney M20J 201 is one of the most significant aircraft in general aviation history. Introduced in 1977, it was the first production aircraft to cruise at 201 mph (175 KTAS) on a 200HP engine — hence the name "201." This achievement represented the pinnacle of aerodynamic efficiency: 168 KTAS cruise on only 10.5 GPH, a specific speed-per-horsepower that remains essentially unmatched by any other certified piston single.
The M20J features a one-piece windshield, refined cowling, reduced-drag landing gear doors, and aerodynamic clean-up that pushed the M20 airframe to its natural limit at 200HP. Approximately 3,200 M20Js were built — making it the most popular Mooney model ever produced.
The M20J is often cited as the best value proposition in cross-country GA flying: you get near-Bonanza cruise speed at Cherokee-like operating costs. For the speed-conscious pilot who doesn't need six seats or turbocharged altitude capability, the M20J is very hard to beat.
Later variants included the MSE (1989-1993) with a fuel-injected IO-360 producing 200HP, and the 205 (1987-1988) which briefly offered 205 mph cruise.

To put this in context: a Cessna 182 with 230HP manages 145 KTAS on 13 GPH. A Piper Arrow with the same IO-360 engine reaches only 138 KTAS on 10.5 GPH. The M20J achieves 30 knots more cruise speed on identical fuel burn through aerodynamic design alone. This is the Mooney magic.
The 201 designation comes from the aircraft's 201 mph max cruise speed (175 KTAS), which was achieved at 75% power at optimum altitude. Real-world owners consistently report 160-170 KTAS at typical cruise altitudes with proper leaning.

The M20J's 1,100 lbs useful load with 64-gallon fuel system makes it a genuine three-adult cross-country machine with outstanding range. Four adults with full fuel works but with minimal baggage. - Flight Training (3): Not a trainer. Fast approach speeds (80+ KIAS), Johnson bar gear, and retractable configuration are inappropriate for primary training. Only suitable for complex endorsement work.
- Backcountry (1): Low-wing retractable with fast approach. The M20J has no business on an unimproved strip.
