Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. Annual inspection is the shop's labor to open and inspect — what they find is the maintenance line, which covers oil changes, plugs, tires, brakes, hoses, lights, a battery and vacuum pump amortised over their life, and the unscheduled squawks that are the largest and least predictable part of it. Reserves are sinking funds toward an overhaul, not a bill you pay this year — and note that a propeller is due on hours or calendar time, typically six years, so flying less does not put it off forever.

The 1967-1970 Cessna 182 (182J, 182K, 182L) introduced the upgraded Continental O-470-R engine -- still 230 HP but with improved accessory configuration, better parts support, and slightly higher TBO reliability than the O-470-L it replaced. Beyond the engine, this era saw progressive interior and electrical refinements while retaining the fastback fuselage geometry of the Omni-Vision era.
Approximately 3,800 examples were produced across 182J, 182K, and 182L combined. These airframes share the best-supported O-470 variant (the R), the modern Omni-Vision cockpit, and the 2,800 lb gross weight that defined the 182 through 1980.
Why the O-470-R Matters
The O-470-R upgrade from the O-470-L was an internal evolution with several practical benefits:
- Better magneto installation: Easier maintenance access, more reliable timing retention
- Improved oil system: Reduced oil consumption at high power settings
- Stronger parts ecosystem: O-470-R remained in production through 1986, so parts availability today is excellent
- Slightly better TBO retention: Higher percentage of engines actually reach 1,500-hour TBO before requiring overhaul
The engine swap is unique to model-year 1967 forward; 182H (1966) and earlier use O-470-L. For buyers, the O-470-R is the preferred engine for long-term ownership.
