Overview

The Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander is a British-designed 10-seat twin-piston utility aircraft that became the best-selling commercial aircraft ever produced in Europe, with over 1,280 built since first flight in 1965. Designed by John Britten and Desmond Norman specifically for the short-haul commuter and utility market, the Islander's high-wing, fixed-gear, squared-off fuselage is an exercise in ruthless practicality: three cabin doors for rapid boarding, no aisle (each row is its own bench seat accessed from outside), simple systems, and brute-force reliability over elegance. It is the defining aircraft of inter-island commuter operations worldwide — Cape Air in the Caribbean, Loganair in Scotland, Aurigny between the Channel Islands, and countless Pacific and Caribbean operators rely on it. Military derivatives (the Defender) serve with police, coast guard, and counter-insurgency forces in dozens of countries. Production continues in Romania and the UK under the current Britten-Norman organization.

Performance

The Islander is not fast — 140 KTAS at altitude is a best-case number, and most operators plan for 130 KTAS block speed. What the Islander does extraordinarily well is lift enormous loads off short, rough strips and deliver them reliably. The quoted 1,090 ft takeoff roll at 6,600 lbs gross is achievable on grass, and the airplane will comfortably operate from strips under 1,500 ft at lighter weights. Single-engine performance is modest (250 fpm best, Vmca ~39 KIAS) but the low Vmca and benign handling make engine-out scenarios survivable at low weights. Fuel burn on the piston is punishing relative to block speed (~24 gph total at 133 KTAS economy cruise, up to 28+ gph at max cruise), which is why the Turbine Islander exists — the BN-2T trades ~$600K+ in acquisition cost for Jet-A burn, hot-and-high capability, and a service ceiling above 25,000 ft. Real-world cruise numbers are very close to book because the airplane is draggy enough that there's little to lose. Handling is honest, heavy in roll, solid in pitch, and completely unpretentious.

Payload & Range

With full fuel (137 gal / 822 lbs) the Islander still has ~2,165 lbs of cabin payload — enough for 9 adults with modest baggage. This is the airplane's defining trick: unlike most GA twins, you don't have to trade fuel for seats. Full seats (10 × 200 lbs = 2,000 lbs) plus 500 lbs baggage leaves ~500 lbs / ~83 gal for fuel, which at 24 gph economy cruise still delivers ~3.3 hours and ~430 nm with reserves — perfectly adequate for the island-hopping mission it was designed for. The BN-2T turbine delivers similar payload-range with Jet-A economics, better hot-and-high performance, and roughly 20 KTAS more cruise, which is why long-stage-length operators prefer it despite the acquisition premium.

Mission Suitability

  • Cargo Hauling (10): This is the Islander's home mission. A ~3,000 lb useful load, three doors, a flat floor, and short-field capability make it the default choice for island freight, check-hauling, skydive drop operations, and parachute/utility work. See cargo-hauling.
  • Surveying (9): High wing, excellent downward visibility, long endurance at low power settings, and ability to carry heavy sensor pods make it a favorite for aerial survey, maritime patrol, and law enforcement. See backcountry-bush.
  • Backcountry (8): STOL capability at heavy weights on unimproved strips is exceptional for a 10-seat twin. Fixed gear, robust oleo struts, and a high wing tolerate rough surfaces well.
  • Business Travel (5): Only viable for scheduled inter-island commuter service or group charters. Slow, loud, and thirsty for point-to-point business use, but unbeatable when you need to move 8 people 150 nm to a 2,000-ft strip.
  • Cross Country (5): Adequate range (755 nm standard, 1,060 nm with optional tanks) but cabin noise, vibration, and speed penalty make long legs unpleasant.
  • Flight Training (3): Too expensive and complex for primary training; used for multi-engine commercial and commuter pilot type-specific training only.
  • Local Fun (2): Not a pleasure airplane. Nothing about operating cost, cabin comfort, or aesthetics suits recreational flying.
  • Aerobatics (1): Prohibited; the Islander is a utility/normal category transport.

Avionics Ecosystem

Legacy Islanders in commuter service typically carry dual VHF nav/com, ADF, DME, mode-C/S transponder, and a basic autopilot (often Bendix M4C or S-Tec). Many airframes have received partial glass upgrades — Garmin GTN 650/750, GNC 255, GTX 345 ADS-B Out, and in higher-spec refurbs, Garmin G600 TXi or Aspen Evolution PFD/MFD retrofits.   • Rajay turbocharging: Boosts ceiling to ~26,000 ft and improves hot/high climb; rare in current fleet but valued for high-altitude operators.
  • Extended-range tip tanks: Push range toward 1,060 nm; common on survey and long-range utility conversions.
  • BN-2T Turbine conversion: Allison/RR 250-B17 retrofit is offered as a factory conversion; dramatically changes the airplane's economics and capability but adds $700K-$1M.
  • Cargo pod / belly pannier: Underbelly pannier adds ~700 lbs of external cargo volume without reducing cabin seating — hugely popular with Caribbean freight operators.

In the US, qualified Islander mechanics are concentrated in the Caribbean, New England (Cape Air's network), and Alaska. Parts availability is good for consumables and structural items but some airframe-specific components have long lead times and require UK sourcing. Annual inspection costs for a commuter-operated BN-2B run $15,000-$30,000 base, with a 6-year/heavy check adding $40,000-$80,000. Cylinder work on the IO-540-K1B5s is the most common unscheduled expense. Islander valuation is tightly coupled to the commercial operator market, not the private-owner market. Pricing tiers:

  • $150K-$250K: High-time BN-2A airframes, mid-time engines, steam panels, probable corrosion exposure; typically "project" or export-market aircraft.

The BN-2 has an active AD history driven primarily by its commercial commuter use and heavy-cycle operation:

  • Landing gear fatigue life (Fairey Hydraulics / B-N): Recurring life-limited component replacement on main gear; non-trivial cost.
  • Horizontal stabilizer attachment bolts: CAA/FAA AD following reports of loose/failed attachment hardware — inspection and torque check required.
  • Flight control interference: AD addressing Koiled Kord / control cable routing that could snag rudder pedal adjustment and restrict pitch control.
