Experience sets your insurance: a 2,000-hour pilot with recent training pays 30–40% less than a 200-hour owner, and student owners pay 20–40% more — on the same aircraft that is often a doubling. Location sets your hangar: a T-hangar runs $200–400 a month in the Midwest against $400–1,500 in a coastal metro, and an outside tie-down is less again. Engine reserves move too — a local shop reusing your serviceable cylinders can come in 30–50% under the national specialty-shop pricing we quote, though you trade the warranty and turnaround that comes with it. Estimate, not a quote. Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. Annual inspection is the shop's labor to open and inspect — what they find is the maintenance line, which covers oil changes, plugs, tires, brakes, hoses, lights, a battery and vacuum pump amortised over their life, and the unscheduled squawks that are the largest and least predictable part of it. Reserves are sinking funds toward an overhaul, not a bill you pay this year — and note that a propeller is due on hours or calendar time, typically six years, so flying less does not put it off forever.

Overview
The GippsAero GA8 Airvan is an Australian-designed single-engine, high-wing, fixed-gear, eight-seat utility aircraft — conceived as a modern replacement for the Cessna 206/207 in the rugged outback, parachute, freight, mission aviation, and surveying roles. First flown in 1995 and certified in 2000, it was built by Gippsland Aeronautics in Latrobe Valley, Victoria. Mahindra Aerospace acquired the company in 2009, renamed it GippsAero, and invested heavily to develop the larger GA10 Airvan 10 turboprop variant. Mahindra halted production in 2020 and officially liquidated its Australian subsidiary MAAPL in 2024. Founder George Morgan bought the company back in late 2023 and restarted piston GA8 production in mid-2025, with serial number 263 representing the first new-build under the restored ownership. Total production sits in the mid-200s.
The Airvan's reputation is that of a rugged, honest "flying ute" (Australian for pickup truck): slow but predictable, easy to load via its enormous cargo door, and genuinely capable of operating from rough strips with a full cabin. It is popular with mission aviation groups (MAF, JAARS), skydiving drop-zones worldwide, aerial survey/photography operators, and remote-area charter in Australia, PNG, and Africa. It is less suited to pilot-owner cross-country work — it cruises only ~120 KTAS on 300 HP — but excels where payload, cabin volume, visibility, and short-field capability matter more than speed.
The GA10 Airvan 10 is a 10-seat stretched derivative powered by a FADEC-controlled Rolls-Royce 250-B17F/2 turboprop rated at 450 SHP takeoff. It received EASA/FAA validation in 2017 but only a handful were built before production ceased; it is essentially a historical/specialty aircraft today. Performance
Book cruise is 120 KTAS at 75% power — pilots consistently report 115–122 KTAS in the real world at 8.5–9.5 gph (lean of peak) up to 15 gph rich. The TC320 holds cruise TAS to the mid-teens and restores sea-level climb at high density altitudes, which is the main reason PNG and East African operators specify it. The normally aspirated GA8 struggles with climb performance at 8,000+ ft density altitude fully loaded — plan departures early morning. Stall manners are exceptionally docile: the long-span high-aspect-ratio wing and generous flaps produce a straight, benign, nose-down break at 53–60 KIAS. Short-field performance is genuine: an 800 ft ground roll and 1,600 ft over 50 ft at max gross is achievable, and with lighter loads and VGs it gets dramatically better.
The Airvan is not fast, and the fixed gear + boxy fuselage means drag penalties are unavoidable. Range with full fuel (87.7 gal usable) is approximately 730 NM no-reserve at economy cruise — respectable for the mission, but well short of a Cessna 206 on equivalent fuel because of the lower cruise speed.
Payload & Range
With a 1,670 lb useful load and 552 lb of fuel (92 gal), the GA8 can fill the tanks and still carry about 1,120 lb in the cabin — roughly six FAA-standard adults (170 lb) and moderate baggage, over ~700 NM. That is the Airvan's headline claim: it is one of the very few piston singles that can honestly carry full fuel plus six people. With all eight seats filled at 170 lb each (1,360 lb) plus 150 lb of baggage, fuel is capped at about 160 lb (~27 gal), yielding ~2 hours endurance and ~200 NM range — enough for the missionary/bush shuttle use case but clearly not a cross-country profile. Skydive operators typically run reduced fuel (30–40 gal) and full jumpers-plus-instructor to maximize cycles per tank.
The GA10 turboprop variant, by contrast, trades some raw payload for 157+ KTAS cruise and FL250 service ceiling, repositioning the airframe toward the turboprop utility niche where the Cessna 208 Caravan dominates.
Mission Suitability

- Surveying (9): Low-vibration cruise, excellent downward/forward visibility, ample panel space for sensor operator stations, and all-day endurance make it a favored aerial photo/LiDAR platform.
- Cross-country (5): Useful for freight runs but slow for owner-flown personal travel; IFR-capable but a Cirrus/Bonanza will outrun it by 40+ knots.
- Business travel (4): Cabin is comfortable but speed and operating cost per seat-mile lose to a used Caravan or Cessna 340.
- Flight training (3): Too expensive to operate and too specialized; only relevant for multi-engine/utility transition training.
- Local fun (3): Not the point of this airplane.
- Aerobatics (1): Prohibited. Utility category normal-ops only.
Avionics Ecosystem
Early GA8s shipped with Garmin GNS 430/530 + analog six-pack. Mid-production airframes typically have Garmin G500 or G600 PFD/MFD retrofits and GTN 650/750 navigators; late Mahindra-era aircraft were delivered with the Garmin G950 integrated flight deck. Autopilot is commonly the S-TEC 55X or Genesys/S-TEC 3100. Many parachute-operator Airvans are stripped of excess avionics to save weight, running only VFR essentials plus a GPS navigator. STCs & Modifications
- Micro AeroDynamics Vortex Generators — STOL kit; drops Vs0 by 4–5 kt, tightens roll authority at low speed, improves aileron effectiveness; ~$4,500 installed and almost universal on mission/skydive airframes.
- Skydive door mod — roll-up or removable door for jumpers, paired with internal strap rigging and external camera steps.
- Cargo pod / belly pod — not common; the cabin is already cavernous.
- Amphibious floats — floatplane kit exists (Wipaire-style) but rarely fitted.
- Glass panel retrofits — Garmin G500 TXi + GFC 500 autopilot is the modern benchmark.
Maintenance & Support
Parts availability was a serious concern during the 2020–2025 production shutdown, with operators stockpiling spares and cannibalizing wrecks. With George Morgan's restart of production in 2025 and a workforce of ~50, parts flow has improved but remains "fair" rather than excellent — not comparable to Cessna 206 ecosystem depth. A&P mechanic familiarity is specialist: most piston singles shops have never touched an Airvan. Factory-trained maintenance exists in Australia, New Zealand, PNG, parts of East Africa, and a handful of US centers (notably operators supporting JAARS/MAF fleets). Annual inspections commonly run $6k–$10k in the US; $15k+ is possible if AD compliance or structural inspections come due. Valuation Factors
Used GA8s trade in a wide band ($375k–$850k) driven more by engine time, avionics, and configuration than by vintage. A mid-2000s airframe with mid-time IO-540 and legacy panel sits in the $400k–$475k range; a low-time 2015+ airframe with G950 and low-time engine approaches $750k–$850k. New-build 2025+ airframes from the restarted line are expected to exceed $1.1M. TC320 turbocharged airframes typically command a $50k–$80k premium for operators who need it. Skydive-configured airframes generally trade at a modest discount because of hard-use hours and stripped interiors. ADs & Common Problems
- AD 2010-18-06 (cargo door) — recurring inspection/rework after reports of in-flight cargo door separation. Superseded and expanded by FAA AD in 2024 requiring inspection of door hinge and latching hardware.
- Electrical bonding AD (2024) — solenoid/relay box assembly bonding issues causing intermittent equipment failures; one-time inspection and rework.
- Wing structural concerns — following the July 2019 Umeå (Sweden) skydive operator fatal crash (9 fatalities) in which wing structural failure was suspected, CAAC temporarily grounded all Chinese GA8s and CASA/EASA issued inspection directives. The accident led to additional wing structural inspections and has cast a long shadow over the type's commercial reputation despite the cause being debated.
- Fuel system / tank sealant — wing tank leaks on higher-time airframes are a known pre-buy item.
- Engine mount corrosion — tropical-operated airframes require close inspection.
- Paint and corrosion — Australian and mission-aviation operating environments are harsh; check belly, empennage attach, and control surface skins.
Pre-buy should be performed by a shop with documented Airvan experience; they are uncommon.
Insurance Profile
Insurance sits firmly in the commercial-utility category rather than personal-pleasure, and reflects the Airvan's skydive/charter/mission mission profile and the post-Umeå underwriting caution. Typical hull premium: 1.5–2.5% of hull value annually; liability coverage at $1M/$100k smooth for commercial operations commonly runs $8k–$15k/year in addition to hull. Owners with <500 hours multi-passenger utility experience should expect 25+ hours of dual and annual recurrent training as a condition.
