Overview
The Dornier Do 28 D-2 Skyservant is a German twin-engine STOL utility aircraft designed in the mid-1960s as a rugged, easy-to-maintain workhorse that could operate from short, unimproved strips. It is visually unmistakable: a slab-sided, boxy high-wing fuselage carrying two Lycoming IGSO-540 piston engines mounted on stub pylons extending forward from the lower fuselage, outboard of the cockpit. The main landing gear is attached to those same stub pylons, giving the airplane an almost cartoonishly purposeful stance.
The Skyservant's reputation is built almost entirely around its military and utility career. A total of 121 Do 28D-2s were built between 1971 and 1974 at Oberpfaffenhofen for the Bundeswehr, where they replaced aging Percival Pembrokes and served in the liaison, light transport, and communications role until the Dornier 228 displaced them in the mid-1990s. Twenty airframes were transferred to the Marineflieger, and a handful were fitted with SLAR radar as the Do 28D-2/OU for Baltic and North Sea oil-spill patrol. Total Do 28D/128 production across all variants exceeded 250 airframes, sold into roughly 30 countries including African, South American, and Southeast Asian bush and paramilitary operators.
In the civilian market the Skyservant is an orphan type: owned today by skydiving operations (where the huge cabin door, climb rate, and jump-ship economics work well), a handful of mission and bush operators, warbird collectors who want ex-Luftwaffe iron, and the odd private adventurer. It is not a beginner's airplane, and it is not an airplane for owners who want a frictionless ownership experience. It is an airplane for people who need to move big, awkward loads into and out of short, rough strips and who are willing to pay the support tax that comes with a German military orphan twin.

The A/B and the D series are fundamentally different aircraft sharing only a model number. Do 28 "Skyservant" always refers to the D-series.
Performance
Book cruise of 165 KTAS / max, 130 KTAS / economy is theoretical; real-world operators typically plan around 140–150 KTAS block speed at 32–38 GPH total — slower than a Baron, on roughly double the fuel, for a comparable-in-air mission. You do not buy a Skyservant for speed.
Where the airplane earns its keep is low and slow. Stall speed with full flaps is in the low 50s KIAS, the wing is a big, high-lift Dornier design with full-span slotted flaps and drooping ailerons, and the forward-mounted engines give excellent prop-wash over the wing root. Sea-level takeoff ground rolls under 800 ft at max gross are routinely achievable, and operators flying light from grass and gravel see takeoff distances comparable to a loaded Cessna 185. The 1,160 fpm book climb is at max gross; at typical skydive weights you will see 1,500+ fpm.
Density altitude hurts the IGSO-540s less than a naturally-aspirated engine because they are geared and supercharged (the "GSO" in the designation), which is why the service ceiling is a legitimate 25,200 ft on pistons. However, those same geared, supercharged engines come with a maintenance bill that is the airplane's defining weakness (see below).
Handling is honest but heavy — control forces are high, the airplane does not want to be flown precisely on a crosswind, and engine-out handling is dominated by the widely-spaced, forward-mounted thrust lines. Vmc work must be taken seriously.
Payload & Range
The Skyservant is one of very few piston aircraft where the "full fuel + full seats" constraint is a non-issue in most real-world loadings.
- Full fuel (200 gal / 1,200 lb), empty cabin: 2,100+ lb of cabin payload remaining — comfortably 8 adults plus bags, or 2,000 lb of cargo. Range ~560 nm with reserves at 140 KTAS.
- Full fuel + 8 pax (1,600 lb) + bags (400 lb): arrives at MTOW with a meaningful reserve. This is genuinely an 8-seat airplane, not a "6 adults or 4 adults and fuel" airplane.
- Half fuel (100 gal / 600 lb), full cabin: 2,700+ lb cabin payload — the airplane becomes a short-haul freight hauler moving serious weight into 1,500-ft strips. Range drops to ~260 nm with reserves.
- Skydive loadout: 15 jumpers + minimum fuel for one climb-and-descent cycle is well inside envelope and explains why the airplane dominates certain European dropzones.
- Ferry / survey loadout: with underwing tanks (100–150 gal additional) and light cabin, range extends beyond 1,000 nm at reduced power settings.
The useful load is the Skyservant's real superpower. Price, maintenance, and speed are the price you pay for it. If you do not actually need the cabin and the STOL numbers, there is almost always a better airplane — a Baron for speed, a Caravan for cargo-with-turbine-reliability, a Cessna 206 for budget-backcountry work. If you do need the cabin and the STOL numbers on a piston budget, there are very few alternatives and the Skyservant is one of them.

Mission Suitability
- Backcountry / bush (9/10): This is the airplane's reason for existing. STOL numbers, massive cabin, twin-engine redundancy, and high wing for obstacle clearance. The ground-handling penalty on rough surfaces is less than you'd expect because the gear geometry is wide and tall.
- Cargo hauling (9/10): 3,300+ lb useful load, a 7-ft-wide square cabin cross-section, double clamshell cargo doors on the left side big enough to load a Euro-pallet, and a flat floor. Few piston singles or light twins can match the volumetric capacity. See cargo-hauling.
- Surveying / sensor platform (8/10): Long endurance with ferry tanks, stable low-speed platform, plenty of cabin volume and electrical capacity for sensors. Proven in the SLAR role with the Marineflieger.
- Cross-country (5/10): Honest 140–150 KTAS on 34–38 GPH is inefficient for pure A-to-B travel when a Baron 58 does the same job 30+ kt faster on less fuel. Endurance is fine; comfort at altitude is fine (unpressurized, so realistically a 10,000 ft airplane).
- Business travel (4/10): Slow, loud, quirky, and an orphan — no. Unless your "business" is hauling cargo into short strips.
- Local fun flying (4/10): Fuel and maintenance burn punishes casual flying. Owners who treat it as a toy rarely keep it long.
- Flight training (2/10): Wrong airplane. Heavy, complex, expensive, low-production, and the IGSO-540 is not an engine you want to learn multi-engine procedures behind.
- Aerobatics (1/10): Not certified, not remotely appropriate.

Avionics Ecosystem
Most civilian Skyservants in the US or Europe today wear one of three panel configurations:
- Ex-military original — KX-series nav/comms, ADF, basic transponder, no GPS. Effectively day-VFR and sketchy-IFR. Found on recently-imported Luftwaffe birds. Budget $40–80k to bring to modern IFR standards.
- 1990s civil upgrade — Garmin GNS 430/530 + KAP-series autopilot, panel-mount GPS, Mode C. Workable for IFR; typical of skydive operators who added minimum-viable capability. These airframes command a premium.
- Modern glass retrofit — Garmin G3X or G500 TXi, GTN 650/750, GFC 500 autopilot (where STC'd or under experimental-exhibition). Rare. Adds $60–120k over a steam-gauge airframe and is generally only seen on the few Skyservants owned by well-funded private operators.
Because the airframe is a low-production orphan, STC'd avionics upgrades are scarce and most modern installs go in as field approvals or under an experimental-exhibition certificate, which is how many US-registered Skyservants now live. See avionics-pricing for install-cost baselines.
STCs & Modifications
STC activity is thin compared to a Beech or Cessna twin, but notable mods include:
- Underwing ferry/range tanks (Marineflieger-pattern) — add roughly 100–150 gal and push range past 1,000 nm for survey/patrol missions.
- Skydive jump door conversion — removed left cargo door, jump step, interior stripping for a 15–17 jumper capacity. Common in North American operators.
- PT6A-110 turboprop conversion (Do 128-6) — extremely rare, performed on only a handful of airframes; roughly doubles the price of the airplane and eliminates the IGSO-540 maintenance problem in exchange for a turbine-powered support problem.
- Walter/GE M601-D2 conversion (Do 28 G.92) — a mid-1990s Czech-engine turbine conversion; a handful exist, mostly in Europe.
- Cargo pod / belly freight pods — occasionally seen on bush operators.
Maintenance & Support
This is the single biggest reason most buyers walk away.
- Parts availability: poor. There is no active factory support. Dornier's GA business line is long gone. Parts come from a combination of EADS/Airbus Defence legacy support (limited and expensive), specialist brokers of ex-Luftwaffe stock, other operators' teardown airframes, and owner-fabricated parts under field approval. Lead times of weeks to months for non-stocked items are normal.
- Mechanic familiarity: rare. In the US there are perhaps a dozen A&P/IA shops with meaningful Do 28 experience, mostly clustered around skydive operations. Annuals at a non-specialist shop routinely surprise owners with discovery work.
- Annual inspection cost: $12,000–25,000 in a typical year; $40,000+ when corrosion work, pylon inspection findings, or engine squawks pile up.
- IGSO-540 overhaul: $65,000–80,000 per side at a specialist (RAM, Western Skyways, Penn Yan declined on some serials — check shop appetite before assuming a number). Double that for both engines at a major.
- Expensive / scarce items: wing bladder tanks, pylon attach hardware, landing gear bushings, supercharger clutch packs, exhaust risers, cabin door hinges and seals, cockpit glass.

A realistic annual operating budget for a private owner flying 150 hours/year is $35,000–50,000 before an engine reserve, and $55,000–80,000 with a proper reserve against the geared engines.
Valuation Factors
Market data on the Skyservant is thin because transactions are rare. Recent US and European data points cluster around:
- $120–160k — tired ex-military airframe, mid-time engines, original avionics, import in progress or recently completed. Buyer inherits unknown maintenance debt.
- $180–230k — sorted civilian airframe with recent annual, mid-time or better engines, GNS 430W-class panel, skydive or bush operator pedigree.
- $260–350k — low-time engines, glass panel, clean airframe with documented corrosion inspection compliance, or a piston airframe with well-maintained ferry tanks and current IFR. Turboprop conversions sit above this band and trade by negotiation.
TBO is the dominant valuation variable because the IGSO-540s cost roughly $65–80k each to overhaul at a specialist shop, and engine runouts on both sides can exceed the airframe's market value. A buyer should value an IGSO-540 at roughly $55/hr of remaining TBO as a sinking-fund reserve — significantly higher than the $20–25/hr typical of a naturally-aspirated O-540. Airframe provenance matters: a well-documented German civil airframe commands a clear premium over an African bush survivor with gaps in the logs.
ADs & Common Problems
The type is administered by EASA (as the original TC holder is German) and airworthiness oversight in the US is handled through bilateral agreement with a US TC number. Active and recurring issues to watch in a pre-buy:
- Wing attach / center section corrosion — EASA has issued recurring inspection requirements on the wing-to-fuselage fittings and the wing spar carry-through. Corrosion here is an airframe-killer on coastal Marineflieger airframes.
- Engine pylon / stub wing cracks — the distinctive forward-mounted engine pods take cyclic loads from the gear and engine, and stress cracks in the pylon attach structure have grounded airframes. Eddy-current inspection is mandatory.
- IGSO-540-A1E cylinder and turbo issues — geared, supercharged Lycomings are not a forgiving engine. Valve problems, cylinder cracking, and supercharger clutch wear are endemic. TBO is 1,200 hours, not the 2,000 typical of unsupercharged Lycomings, and in-service airframes rarely make TBO without top overhauls. Shop rates for these engines are specialist-only.
- Flap actuator and control cable wear — the full-span slotted flap system has a lot of linkage and the geometry is unforgiving of wear.
- Fuel bladder deterioration — rubber bladder tanks in the wing; replacement is expensive and requires wing removal on some serials.
- Gear leg and brake hardware — military-surplus airframes often arrive with worn-out brakes, tires, and gear-leg bushings that are not easy to source.
- Documentation and logbook translation — ex-Luftwaffe airframes arrive with German-language logs and military maintenance records that must be reconciled to a civil standard before a US ferry or import.
Insurance Profile
The Skyservant is an underwriter's problem child. It is an unpressurized twin with high gross weight, a low-production orphan type, a complex geared/supercharged engine, and a buyer population skewed toward low-time private owners attracted to the mystique. Expect:
- Hull rates of 3.5–5.5% of agreed value annually — roughly double a Baron 58 on the same pilot.
- Minimum pilot qualifications: commercial multi, 1,000 TT / 250 multi / 25 in-type for reasonable rates; sub-500 TT buyers will struggle to place coverage at all.
- Mandatory recurrent training — most carriers require annual SimCom-equivalent or type-specific recurrent, and there is no type-specific sim, so training is done in-airplane with a known instructor.
- Liability caps often limited to $1M smooth rather than higher split limits.
- Ferry/import coverage is a separate, short-term policy and can be expensive for single-engine-over-water legs.
