Overview

The Shrike Commander 500S is the final and most refined piston version of the Aero Commander 500 family, a lineage of high-wing light twins designed by Ted Smith and his team of 14 engineers beginning in 1946. First certified on 30 June 1950 as the Model 520, the Commander grew through the 560, 680, and 500 series before culminating in the 500S Shrike Commander, manufactured from 1968 to 1979 by North American Rockwell (and later Rockwell International).

The Shrike's signature feature is its high wing — an unusual choice for a cabin-class piston twin, and one that gives it unmistakable ramp presence, excellent visibility, and the ability to load passengers and cargo under a shaded wing without ducking. Ted Smith's structural philosophy produced what owners call an "anvil-like" airframe: overbuilt, rugged, and famously stable in cruise.

The Commander's fame is inseparable from Bob Hoover, who for decades flew his yellow-and-white Shrike Commander in the most celebrated aerobatic routine in general aviation — loops, rolls, and even a dead-stick energy-management sequence with both engines shut down, all in a 6,750-lb cabin twin. Hoover's Shrike is now in the collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. In 1955 the USAF selected the Aero Commander as President Eisenhower's personal transport, and two served in the White House fleet.

The 500 family totaled roughly 3,300 aircraft across all piston and turboprop variants; the Shrike 500S itself accounts for several hundred examples, many still flying today under the care of Twin Commander Aircraft LLC in Creedmoor, North Carolina. Owners who fly Shrikes tend to keep them: dispatch reliability and owner satisfaction are consistently rated high, though costs are decidedly cabin-class.

The 500S is the preferred variant for buyers today: direct-drive IO-540s (no troublesome geared engines), parts commonality, and the latest airframe refinements. Geared-engine predecessors (520, 560, 680-series) can be bargains on purchase but carry engine-overhaul risk and reduced mechanic familiarity.

Performance

Book cruise is 176 KTAS at 75% power at 9,000 ft, burning roughly 31 GPH total. Real-world owners typically pull back to 65% and see 160–170 KTAS on about 26–28 GPH. The high wing and generous flap area give the Shrike genuinely benign slow-flight manners — Vs0 of 59 KIAS is remarkably low for a 6,750-lb twin — and short-field performance belies its size: over-50 numbers under 2,000 ft make it usable from 3,000-ft strips most pilots would never consider for a cabin twin.

Climb performance is a real strength: 1,340 fpm at sea level, and single-engine climb is respectable thanks to the direct-drive IO-540s and the tall rudder. Service ceiling is 19,400 ft but most Shrikes live between 6,000 and 12,000 ft where the normally aspirated engines are happiest. At altitude, density-altitude effects on the naturally aspirated IO-540s are what you'd expect — the Shrike is not a mountain-west cruiser the way a turbocharged 690 rockwell-turbo-commander is.

Vmc of 65 KIAS is lower than many contemporary twins (Baron, 310), giving more margin on engine-out below blue-line. The airframe's stability in cruise is legendary — Hoover's dead-stick iced-tea routine demonstrated pitch control so precise he could pour a drink in aerobatic flight without spilling.

Payload & Range

Max gross 6,750 lbs, empty ~4,635 lbs, useful load ~2,115 lbs. Full fuel (156 gal × 6.0 = 936 lbs) leaves 1,179 lbs for people and bags — effectively 6 adults at 170 lbs with light baggage, or 4 adults with 300 lbs of bags. Not bad for a 60-year-old design.

Practical scenarios:

  • Full fuel, 2 pilots + 2 pax: ~825 nm range with reserves. Covers most 4-hour business legs comfortably.
  • Full seats (6 adults + pilot, ~1,200 lbs), reduced fuel: ~100 gallons (600 lbs) yields ~500 nm range. A typical "business day trip" load.
  • Freight configuration (2 pilots + cargo): ~1,800 lbs of cargo with half tanks, ~500 nm. Volume often limits before weight.

The Shrike does not suffer the brutal payload-range compromises of a loaded Baron 58 — useful load is genuinely generous — but fuel burn (26–31 GPH) means the range figure is flattered by the 156-gal tanks rather than by efficiency.


Mission Suitability

  • Business travel (8/10) — The Shrike's raison d'être. Seven seats, 825 nm range, 170+ KTAS cruise, stand-up-ish cabin, twin redundancy for over-water and night IFR, and cabin-class ramp presence. The high wing makes passenger boarding dignified in rain or sun. It is outclassed in speed by a Baron 58 or 421 but wins on comfort, stability, and visibility.
  • Cross-country (8/10) — 825 nm book range with tanks and a light load puts most business city-pairs within reach nonstop. Six adults with bags and full fuel is a stretch due to useful load tradeoffs, but three-plus-bags at full fuel is comfortable.
  • Cargo hauling (7/10) — 2,115 lb useful load and a cabin that swallows bulky items under a high wing makes the Shrike a surprisingly capable hauler. The wide double clamshell door on the left side accepts large boxes. It is not a freighter like a Navajo, but for mixed pax/cargo work it shines.
  • Surveying (6/10) — High wing gives unobstructed downward visibility — a genuine asset for aerial photography, pipeline patrol, and survey work. Twin reliability is a plus for long ferry legs. Fuel burn limits the economics vs. a single.
  • Local fun flying (5/10) — Stable, comfortable, and a genuine head-turner, but operating costs ($38k+/year) make it an expensive Sunday runabout unless you actually use the cabin.
  • Backcountry (3/10) — Short-field numbers are good, but a 6,750-lb cabin twin on unimproved strips is a maintenance nightmare; prop and gear damage risk is high.
  • Flight training (2/10) — Insurance, cost, and complexity make it a poor primary or even multi trainer, though some schools use Shrikes for initial cabin-class twin orientation.
  • Aerobatics (2/10) — Not certified for aerobatics. Hoover's routine was a one-man exception flown by perhaps the finest stick-and-rudder pilot of the 20th century. Do not emulate.

Avionics Ecosystem

Most Shrikes came from the factory with dual King or Collins nav/comms, ADF, DME, and an autopilot (typically Century III or Collins AP-106). Today, panel configurations cluster in three tiers:

  • Legacy ($150k–$220k aircraft) — Original King KX-170B/KX-155 radios, analog ADIs, working Century autopilot, no GPS or a dated IFR KLN-94. ADS-B Out typically via GTX-335 tail-beacon retrofit.
  • Mid-refurbishment ($220k–$330k) — Dual Garmin GNS-430W or a single GTN-650, GTX-345 transponder, WAAS LPV capability, often one Aspen E5/E1000 PFD replacing the old ADI/HSI.
  • Fully refurbed ($330k–$450k+) — Dual GTN-750Xi, full Garmin G600 TXi or G500 TXi glass, GFC-600 autopilot retrofit (STC available via Twin Commander-approved shops), engine data via JPI EDM-960 or Insight G4 twin.

STCs & Modifications

  • Aircenter Shrike conversions — Aircenter, Inc. offers a series of STC packages including interior refurbishment, panel upgrades, and LED lighting.
  • Vortex generators — Several VG kits reduce Vmc and Vs, improving single-engine safety margin. ~$3,500 installed.
  • Gross weight increase STCs — Limited; most Shrikes are at the factory max.
  • GFC-600 autopilot STC — Modern digital autopilot retrofit available, ~$55k–$75k installed.
  • Fuel system improvements — Robertson and other STCs for improved fuel management.
  • Engine upgrades — Some Shrikes have been converted to 300-hp IO-540 variants via field-approval or STC, yielding modest cruise and climb gains.

Maintenance & Support

  • Parts availability: good. Twin Commander Aircraft LLC in Creedmoor, NC is the type certificate holder and maintains a worldwide service center network. Factory-new and reconditioned parts are available; lead times are acceptable for most items. Some trim and interior parts require fabrication.
  • Mechanic familiarity: specialist. A generic twin-rated A&P should not be the primary wrench on a Shrike. Use a Twin Commander authorized service center (there are ~15 in North America). Rates $110–$160/hr.
  • Typical annual inspection: $3,000–$4,000 in a clean year; $8,000–$10,000+ when wing spar AD is due or engine-mount/exhaust-area corrosion is found.

ADs & Common Problems

  • Recurring wing spar corrosion AD — The single most significant ownership cost. The spar caps must be inspected for corrosion every three years; inspection alone runs $9,000–$11,000, and if corrosion is found the repair can be enormously expensive or total the airframe. This AD is the defining pre-buy item on any Commander piston.
  • AD 75-12-9 (control system bob weights) — Required installation of bob weights in the pitch control system on all 500, A, B, U, and S models after 22 in-flight structural failures linked to extreme pitch sensitivity at aft CG. Verify compliance on any pre-buy.
  • Single hydraulic pump (left engine only) — Gear and flaps are hydraulic; hydraulic pressure alone holds the gear up. Lose the left engine on departure and you cannot retract the gear, which costs climb performance dramatically. Some owners add an electric backup pump.
  • Exhaust and engine mount corrosion — The aft portions of the nacelle structure behind the exhaust stacks are a known corrosion/fatigue area; rework can add $5k–$10k to an annual.
  • Fuel bladder leaks — Rubber bladders age and seep; replacement runs several thousand dollars per cell.
  • Landing gear rigging — Complex trunnion-and-retraction geometry requires a Twin Commander-experienced shop to rig correctly.
  • Geared-engine variants (520, 560, 680) — GSO/IGSO-540 engines have shorter TBOs, reduction gear overhaul costs, and are not for bargain hunters.

Pre-buy must be done by a Twin Commander Aircraft LLC-authorized service center. A generic twin-A&P pre-buy on a Commander is a recipe for missed issues.

Insurance Profile

The Shrike sits in the cabin-class piston twin insurance category, which has hardened considerably since 2019. Expect:

  • Hull premium: ~2.0%–2.8% of agreed hull value annually for a qualified pilot (e.g., $5,000–$7,500 on a $250k hull).
  • Liability: $1M smooth is difficult to obtain on piston twins; most owners carry $1M/$100k sublimit. Premium roughly $1,500–$2,500.
  • Pilot requirements: Underwriters typically require 500+ TT, 100+ multi, 25+ in type, recurrent training annually (SimCom or equivalent), and often a mentor-pilot requirement for low-time-in-type buyers.
  • Age cap: Pilots over 70 face surcharges; over 75 often cannot secure hull coverage.
