The 1960-1969 Beechcraft Debonair and Bonanza 33 family covers the straight-tail Bonanza before the F33A engine upgrade. This era began with the 1960 Model 35-33 ("Debonair") -- a stripped-down, conventional-tail version of the V-tail Bonanza, originally intended as a budget alternative -- and evolved through Debonair A33-E33 and into the Bonanza F33 (1970 was the last carbureted-era year for F33). Approximately 1,800 examples were produced across the ten-year run.

The pre-F33A straight-tails are the most affordable retractable Bonanzas in the resale market -- typically $55,000-$135,000 -- but they carry lower performance than the F33A (1970-1995, IO-520 285 HP) and have less robust modern parts support. For buyers prioritizing acquisition cost over performance and willing to accept 225-260 HP performance, these are genuine value plays.

The "Debonair" Marketing Story

The 1960 Model 35-33 was Beechcraft's response to the Cessna 210 (introduced 1960) and Piper Comanche (introduced 1958) -- both of which offered retractable-gear 4-seat performance at significantly lower pricing than the V-tail Bonanza 35. Beech's strategic answer was a stripped-down V-tail Bonanza with a conventional tail and reduced trim:

  • Conventional empennage (cheaper to manufacture, less drag-but-not-cool)
  • Simplified interior trim
  • Smaller standard fuel tanks
  • Vinyl interior (vs leather V-tail standard)
