Estimate, not a quote. Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. Annual inspection is the shop's labor to open and inspect — what they find is the maintenance line, which covers oil changes, plugs, tires, brakes, hoses, lights, a battery and vacuum pump amortised over their life, and the unscheduled squawks that are the largest and least predictable part of it. Reserves are sinking funds toward an overhaul, not a bill you pay this year — and note that a propeller is due on hours or calendar time, typically six years, so flying less does not put it off forever.

Overview
The Mooney M20 is one of the most significant designs in general aviation — the airplane that proved you could go fast without going big. Al Mooney's design philosophy was simple: minimize drag through clean aerodynamics rather than adding horsepower. The result is an airplane that cruises 15-25 knots faster than any equivalent-horsepower competitor.
The original M20 debuted in 1955 with a wood wing and 150HP. The M20A followed in 1958, and the breakthrough M20C Mark 21 (1963-1978) established the template: Lycoming O-360-A1D producing 180HP, all-metal construction, retractable gear operated by a manual "Johnson bar," and a cruise speed of 140 KTAS — astonishing for 180HP when a Cessna 172 with similar power managed only 122 KTAS.
The M20C is the most numerous early Mooney and represents one of the best speed-per-dollar values in general aviation. It's the affordable pilot's fast cross-country machine.
Total early M20 production (M20 through M20C) was approximately 3,100 aircraft.

Performance
The M20C cruises at 140 KTAS at 75% power on only 9 GPH — a staggering efficiency figure. For comparison, a Cessna 172 with 180HP manages 122 KTAS on 8 GPH, and a Piper Cherokee 180 reaches about 124 KTAS on 9 GPH. The Mooney achieves this 15-20 knot advantage through aerodynamic design: laminar flow wing, tight cowling, small frontal area, and clean retractable gear.
Economy cruise at 55% power yields 125-130 KTAS on 7 GPH, which gives range exceeding 1,000 nm with reserves — exceptional for a 180HP four-seater.
The tradeoff is approach speed. The Mooney's clean, slippery airframe means it doesn't slow down easily. Approach speeds of 80-90 KIAS are normal, and the aircraft takes patience to slow in the pattern. Speed brakes are a popular modification.
The forward-swept vertical tail (the "Mooney lean") is a distinctive recognition feature and contributes to directional stability.

The M20C's useful load of 1,050 lbs is competitive, but the tiny cabin limits practical passenger and baggage capacity. The real strength is the 660 nm range on 52 gallons — fuel efficiency is extraordinary. Two adults with full fuel have excellent range and generous baggage allowance. Four adults require careful weight management and reduced fuel for meaningful baggage.

Mission Suitability
- Flight Training (3): The M20C is not a trainer. Fast approach speeds, the Johnson bar manual gear system, and retractable gear make it inappropriate for primary training. Insurance costs for training are prohibitive. Only suitable for advanced complex/HP endorsement training with an experienced instructor.
- Backcountry (2): Low-wing retractable with relatively fast approach speeds. Not designed for unimproved strips.
- Business Travel (5): Capable cross-country platform but 140 KTAS and four cramped seats limit its appeal for business. The later M20J and M20R are much better for this mission.
- Aerobatics (1): Not aerobatic certified. Normal/utility category only.
- Cross-Country (8): This is where the M20C shines. 140 KTAS on 9 GPH is outstanding efficiency. 660 nm range covers most practical cross-country flights. One of the best cross-country values in GA.
- Cargo Hauling (2): Tiny cabin. The Mooney M20 has one of the smallest cabins of any four-seat aircraft. Baggage area is extremely limited.
- Local Fun Flying (7): Quick, responsive handling. The Mooney rewards precise flying and is genuinely fun for the experienced pilot. The Johnson bar gear adds a tactile, engaging element.
- Surveying (3): Low-wing limits visibility. Fast cruise requires significant power reduction.
Avionics Ecosystem
The M20C's panel is notably small — one of the tightest in GA aviation:
- Budget ($5K-$15K): Single GPS (Garmin aera or GNS 430W), basic IFR, ADS-B transponder. Panel space is very limited.
- Mid-range ($15K-$40K): Garmin GTN 650Xi, Garmin G5 for AI/DG, GTX 345. About the maximum practical installation.
- Full upgrade ($40K-$60K): Dual G5s, GTN 650Xi, GFC 500 autopilot. Possible but extremely tight — every inch of panel space must be planned carefully. Mooney-specific avionics shops are recommended.
The small panel is one of the M20C's genuine limitations. Large-screen PFD/MFD installations (G500/G600 TXi) are possible but require significant panel modification.

- Parts availability: Fair. Mooney has gone through multiple bankruptcies and ownership changes, most recently ceasing production around 2019. Mooney-specific parts are becoming harder to source, though Lycoming O-360 engine parts are universally available. LASAR (Lake Aero Styling & Repair) is the primary Mooney parts source.
