Overview
The Zlin Z-142, Z-242L, and Z-143L form a family of all-metal, low-wing, side-by-side trainers produced by Moravan Otrokovice (now Zlin Aircraft a.s.) in the Czech Republic. They are the evolution of the earlier Z-42/Z-43 wooden-and-mixed-construction trainers and are widely recognized as robust, semi-aerobatic machines favored by European military flight schools, national aeroclubs, and a modest but dedicated owner community in North America.
The original Z-142 first flew on 29 December 1978 and entered series production in 1981, powered by the Czech LOM M-337AK 210 hp inverted inline six-cylinder engine with provisions for sustained inverted flight. Roughly 360-400 airframes were produced in Z-142 and Z-142C forms, many serving as primary trainers for Warsaw Pact and later European air forces. The Z-242L ("L" = Lycoming) appeared in 1990 as a Western-market variant, re-engined with the 200 hp Textron Lycoming AEIO-360-A1B6 driving an MTV-9 three-blade constant-speed prop, bringing Western parts support and smoother operation. The Z-143L is the four-seat touring derivative, stretching the airframe and installing a 235 hp Lycoming O-540-J3A5 for cruise and load-hauling duty at the expense of aerobatic capability.
All three share the Zlin DNA: bulletproof all-metal structure, heavy control feel, excellent visibility under a large bubble canopy, and stressed-skin wings rated for aerobatics (+6/-3.5 g on the Z-142/Z-242L). They are the airplanes you buy when you want a certified European aerobatic trainer at a fraction of the cost of an Extra 200 or Extra 330, accept limited US parts logistics, and value the heavy, predictable control harmony that three generations of fighter pilots learned on.

Performance
The Z-242L's book cruise of 115-125 KTAS at 75% power is honest but thirsty: the AEIO-360 burns 9-10 gph for what a cessna-172-mid delivers at 8 gph. The airframe is heavy for its horsepower (2,400 lb gross on 200 hp) because it was designed for G-loads first and economy second. Climb at sea level is a genuine 845 fpm solo and drops sharply with two adults and full fuel at density altitude - this is a sea-level airplane that feels mushy above 8,000 ft despite the 15,750 ft service ceiling.
In aerobatic configuration (reduced fuel, solo or with instructor), the Z-242L has light ailerons, heavy elevator, and a very stable inverted attitude thanks to the symmetrical wing section and inverted fuel/oil system. It is not a snappy competition machine - think of it as a certified super-decathlon with a canopy and nosewheel rather than a rival to the Extras.
The Z-143L is a completely different airplane dynamically: heavier, more stable, genuinely capable four-seat cross-country tourer. Book cruise is 127 KTAS at 75%, range is 1,700 km (920 nm) with long-range tanks. It is not certified for aerobatics - the stretched airframe and additional seats moved it into Utility category only.
Real-world operators report the Z-142's M-337AK engine is reliable when properly maintained but suffers from parts logistics in North America - LOM Praha is the only source for cylinders, mags, and bearings, and lead times can run 60-120 days.
Payload & Range
Z-242L (two-seat aerobatic) with 794 lb useful load:
- Full standard fuel (31 gal / 186 lb) + 2 adults (360 lb) + 30 lb baggage leaves ~218 lb of margin - comfortably within gross. Range at 75% is ~430 nm with reserves.
- Aerobatic configuration: solo pilot (200 lb) + 15 gal fuel (90 lb) stays well under aerobatic gross and gives ~45 minutes of sequence time plus reserves.
- Wingtip tanks option: Full 230 L (60 gal / 360 lb) + 2 adults (360 lb) puts the airplane at gross with zero baggage - the long-range fit punishes payload. Range climbs to ~720 nm.
Z-143L (four-seat tourer) with ~1,150 lb useful load:
- Full main fuel (32 gal / 192 lb) + 4 adults (720 lb) + 80 lb baggage leaves ~160 lb margin - a genuine four-seat airplane.
- Long-range tanks (59 gal total): 2 adults + full fuel yields ~920 nm range, a real touring capability.
- Full fuel + full seats is not achievable - this is normal for a 235 hp four-seater and is the same tradeoff as a piper-arrow or cessna-182-mid.

Mission Suitability
- Flight training (8/10): Exceptional primary/intermediate trainer. Heavy, deliberate controls teach good habits; certified for spins and aerobatics; fully IFR-capable. Downsides are parts logistics (Z-142) and insurance for low-time PICs on a foreign type.
- Aerobatics (8/10): Strong recreational and training aerobatic platform. +6/-3.5 g envelope covers everything short of competition Unlimited; inverted systems on both M-337AK and AEIO-360 versions allow sustained inverted flight. Not competitive with Extra/MX for Advanced/Unlimited contests.
- Local fun flying (8/10): Big bubble canopy, side-by-side seating, docile stall manners, and ramp presence make this a gorgeous $100 hamburger ride.
- Cross-country (4/10 / 6/10 for Z-143L): Two-seat variants have limited range (430-500 nm) and modest cruise speed. The Z-143L is genuinely a decent tourer at 127 KTAS with four seats.
- Business travel (3/10): Too slow, too thirsty, parts too scarce for schedule-critical travel.
- Backcountry (2/10): Low-wing, fixed tricycle, no STOL pretensions. Wrong tool entirely.
- Cargo (2/10): Two seats, small baggage, tight behind-seat hat shelf.

Avionics Ecosystem
Factory-delivered Z-242L and Z-143L airplanes ranged widely. Early 1990s examples typically shipped with Czech TL Elektronika or basic Bendix/King stacks: KX-155 nav/com, KR-87 ADF, KT-76A transponder, and a KI-209 CDI. Mid-era (late 1990s) examples came with dual KX-155s and a KLN-89B or Garmin GNC-250XL GPS. Late-production Z-143LSi airplanes were often delivered with Garmin 430W and partial glass options.
Current upgrade paths are constrained by the foreign type certificate. Garmin G5/GI-275 replacement instruments and GNS/GTN navigators install under FAA AML STCs that cover the Z-242L and Z-143L since 2017-2019. Full glass retrofits (G3X Touch, Dynon Certified) are technically available but few shops have completed them on the type - expect significant engineering and sign-off overhead from a DER familiar with EASA-origin airframes. STCs & Modifications
- Wingtip tanks (Z-242L / Z-143L): Factory option bringing fuel from 120 L to 230 L, roughly doubling range. Adds ~15 lb empty weight and restricts aerobatic envelope when fueled.
- MT three-blade composite prop: Factory standard on Z-242L; some Z-142s retrofitted from the original Avia V-500A two-blade.
- LOM M-337AK to Lycoming AEIO-360 conversion: Engineered but rarely performed; amounts to a near-total firewall-forward rebuild and is usually only cost-effective as a major damage repair alternative.

Parts availability is the defining issue. Zlin Aircraft a.s. in Otrokovice remains in business and supports the fleet, but:
- Airframe parts: Available from factory with 30-90 day lead times; US distribution is through a small network of brokers, not a stocking dealer.
- M-337AK engine parts: LOM Praha is the sole source. Cylinders, mags, starters, and carburetor parts typically ship from the Czech Republic with 60-120 day lead times and 30-50% duty/shipping markup.
- Lycoming-powered variants (Z-242L, Z-143L): Engine and prop parts are standard US supply (Aviall, AirPower). Firewall-forward maintenance is a non-issue.
- A&P familiarity: Outside a handful of shops with Zlin experience (primarily in Texas, Florida, California, and the Northeast), most mechanics have never touched the type. Plan on shipping airframe work to a specialist for anything beyond routine annual.
- Typical annual cost: $4,500-$8,000 for a Lycoming-powered example in good condition; $6,000-$12,000 for a Z-142 with M-337AK, heavily dependent on whether LOM parts are needed.

Pricing is bimodal. A 1985-1990 Z-142 with M-337AK, basic panel, and 3,000+ hours typically trades at $55,000-$95,000. A 1995-2000 Z-242L with a mid-time Lycoming, KX-155/KLN-94 panel, and clean logs sits in $110,000-$160,000. Late-production (2005+) Z-242L and Z-143LSi airplanes with glass panels and low time have crossed $300,000-$380,000 at European dealers but rarely find US buyers at those numbers.
Key valuation drivers:
- Engine type: Lycoming-powered Z-242L commands a $40-60K premium over a comparable Z-142 with M-337AK purely because of US parts availability.
- Inverted systems intact and functional: worth $5-10K.

ADs & Common Problems
The Zlin family has a manageable but non-trivial AD history:
- AD 2017-10-09 (effective July 2017): Requires incorporation of ZLIN Aircraft a.s. Chapter 9 Airworthiness Limitations Rev. 22 (dated 15 March 2016) into the approved maintenance program for Z-242L airplanes, imposing new life limits on critical components including wing attach fittings, control system components, and landing gear elements. Compliance is recurring inspection and eventual replacement - these are calendar and G-count driven, not optional.
- AD 2008-12-05 (Z-143L): Addressed elevator control horn fatigue cracking; required repetitive inspections and eventual replacement.
- Earlier Moravan SBs covering main landing gear leaf-spring attach bolts, canopy latch mechanism, and fuel selector O-rings - all generally handled at annual.
Common pre-buy red flags:
- Hidden corrosion in the main spar carry-through and wing skin laps, especially on airplanes stored outdoors in Europe before import.
- Canopy crazing and latch wear - replacement canopies are $8,000-$15,000 and parts delivery is slow.
- M-337AK cylinder cracking on high-time Z-142s; LOM replacement cylinders are expensive and slow to source.
- Logbook completeness - many imports arrive with spotty Czech/English logs; a thorough records reconstruction is mandatory.
- G-load history: aerobatic time should be logged; ex-military or aeroclub airframes may have high cumulative G exposure.
Insurance Profile
Zlin family insurance is harder to place than mainstream US trainers. Expect:
- Hull premiums of 2.5-4.0% of insured value for Z-142/Z-242L (aerobatic use), compared to 1.2-1.8% for a fixed-gear Cessna trainer. A $130,000 Z-242L typically runs $3,200-$4,500/year all-in for a current pilot with 500+ hrs total and 25+ hrs in type.
- Underwriters: Only a few markets write Zlins - typically USAIG, Global Aerospace, and Old Republic via EAA/Falcon brokers. Avemco has historically declined.
- Open pilot warranties require type-specific time (often 10-25 hours in make/model) and a tailwheel or complex checkout in aerobatic category.
- Aerobatic endorsement adds $500-$1,200 annually; airshow/contest use requires separate placement.
- Z-143L is cheaper to insure (utility category, four seats, no aerobatic rating) - more like a piper-arrow profile at $1,800-$2,500/year.
