Overview
The Citabria (spell it backwards — it's "airbatic") is one of GA's most enduring designs. Derived from the 1940s Aeronca Champion, the Citabria was introduced in 1964 by Champion Aircraft and has been in continuous production under various manufacturers: Champion (1964-1970), Bellanca (1970-1980), American Champion (1989-present). The design lineage spans over 80 years.
The Citabria family includes the basic Citabria models (7ECA, 7GCAA, 7GCBC) for training and utility, and the Decathlon/Super Decathlon (8KCAB) for competition aerobatics. Over 5,200 Citabrias and thousands of Decathlons have been produced — total production across the Champion/Citabria/Decathlon family exceeds 6,000 aircraft.
The Citabria is the classic tailwheel trainer and aerobatic introduction aircraft. Its docile handling, moderate aerobatic capability (+5G/-2G), and affordable operating costs make it the standard entry point for tailwheel flying and basic aerobatics. The Super Decathlon extends this to unlimited aerobatics (+6G/-5G) with inverted fuel and oil systems.
American Champion Aircraft in Rochester, Wisconsin continues to produce the Citabria Explorer, Adventure, and Super Decathlon, as well as newer variants with upgraded engines.

The critical distinction is between Citabria (normal/utility, +5G/-2G, flat-bottom airfoil) and Decathlon (aerobatic, +6G/-5G, semi-symmetrical airfoil, inverted systems). The Decathlon's symmetrical airfoil enables sustained inverted flight and competition-quality aerobatics that the Citabria cannot perform.
Performance
The 7GCBC Explorer cruises at 109 KTAS on 8.5 GPH with 39 gallons fuel — providing 467 nm range. This is modest cross-country performance but the Citabria was designed for training and aerobatics, not speed.
The 7GCBC's wing flaps and longer wingspan (34.5 ft vs 33.4 ft for the 7GCAA) provide excellent STOL performance — stall speed drops to 40 KIAS with flaps, and takeoff over a 50-foot obstacle requires only 630 feet. This makes the Explorer variant genuinely useful for short-field and backcountry operations.
The Super Decathlon at 180HP cruises at 123 KTAS and climbs at 1,280 FPM. The inverted fuel and oil systems (AEIO-360 engine) and constant-speed propeller enable sustained competition aerobatics including sustained inverted flight, snap rolls, and vertical maneuvers.
The older wood-spar Citabrias (pre-1995) and the newer metal-spar models (1995+) are significantly different aircraft from a structural and maintenance perspective. The wood-spar AD (AD 2000-25-02) is the single biggest consideration when buying a pre-1995 model.

The Citabria's 570 lbs useful load is tight for two larger adults with full fuel. Two 160-lb pilots work well; two 200-lb pilots require reduced fuel. The Super Decathlon's higher gross weight (1,950 lbs) provides slightly more margin. Solo aerobatic flying with full fuel is comfortable in both models.

Mission Suitability
- Flight Training (8): THE tailwheel trainer. The Citabria has introduced more pilots to tailwheel flying and basic aerobatics than any other aircraft. Docile handling, predictable stall behavior, good visibility from the tandem front seat, and affordable operating costs. Also widely used as a glider towplane.
- Backcountry (5): The 7GCBC Explorer with flaps has genuine STOL capability. The High Country Explorer (180HP, larger wheels) is a credible light backcountry aircraft. Limited by two seats and modest useful load compared to a Super Cub or Husky.
- Business Travel (1): Two tandem seats, 109 KTAS. Not a business aircraft.
- Aerobatics (7): The Citabria (+5G/-2G) handles basic aerobatics — loops, rolls, spins, hammerheads. The Super Decathlon (+6G/-5G) is a genuine competition platform competitive at IAC Sportsman through Advanced levels. Not quite Pitts/Extra-level for Unlimited competition.
- Cross-Country (3): 467 nm range at 109 KTAS is usable but slow. Tandem seating is cramped for long trips. Adequate for weekend trips to nearby destinations.
- Cargo Hauling (2): Two seats with small baggage area. Limited useful load.
- Local Fun Flying (9): Outstanding. The Citabria is simply fun — responsive controls, good visibility, tailwheel character, and the ability to do a few aerobatic maneuvers make every flight enjoyable. The fabric-covered biplane aesthetic adds charm. One of the best pure fun-flying aircraft available.
- Surveying (5): High wing provides excellent downward visibility. Good slow-flight characteristics. Used for pipeline patrol and glider towing, which share survey-like operational profiles. Limited endurance.
Avionics Ecosystem
- Typical vintage Citabria: Minimal VFR panel — airspeed, altimeter, compass, slip/skid ball, tachometer, engine instruments, single comm radio. Many Citabrias are intentionally simple.
- Modern American Champion factory: Garmin G5 or GI-275 available. ADS-B transponder standard on new production.
- Common upgrades ($5,000-$15,000): Garmin G5, handheld or panel-mount GPS, ADS-B transponder.
- IFR: Technically possible but rarely done. The Citabria's mission doesn't justify IFR avionics investment.

Key ADs:
- AD 2000-25-02 (Wood spar inspection): THE critical AD for pre-1995 Citabrias. Requires inspection of wooden wing spars for cracks, compression damage, and deterioration. Invasive inspection that can ground aircraft if damage is found. Metal spar wing replacement is the terminating action.

- Wood spar deterioration (pre-1995): The single biggest concern for older Citabrias. Wood spars can develop hidden cracks, compression damage from hard landings, and moisture-related deterioration. The AD 2000-25-02 inspection is mandatory but still doesn't catch all problems. Metal spar wings are strongly recommended for any pre-1995 Citabria.
- Fabric condition: Standard fabric aircraft concern. Ceconite/Poly-Fiber covering lasts 15-25 years. Re-cover costs $12,000-$20,000.
- Landing gear legs: Spring steel gear can develop fatigue cracks. Aluminum main gear legs (2004+) address this on newer production.
- Brake wear: Tailwheel differential braking accelerates brake pad wear.
- Engine cooling (180HP models): The 180HP O-360 in the Citabria cowling can run warm. CHT monitoring recommended.
