Overview
The Yakovlev Yak-18T is a four/five-seat, low-wing, retractable-gear utility and training aircraft developed by the Yakovlev OKB as a complete redesign of the tandem-seat Yak-18 series. First flown in 1967 and placed in series production in 1972 at the Smolensk Aviation Plant, the Yak-18T served as the primary basic trainer for Aeroflot civil flight schools across the Soviet Union — including the academies at Sasovo, Aktyubinsk, Buguruslan, Kirovograd, and Krasnyi Kut — from the early 1970s until the late 1980s. Approximately 700 aircraft were built in the initial production run, with Smolensk resuming small-batch production in 1993; roughly 90 additional airframes were completed through the early 2000s, about 30 of which were exported.
The Yak-18T is instantly recognizable as a "real" four-seat airplane with fighter-like proportions, a bubble canopy/door arrangement, and the distinctive bark of the 9-cylinder Vedeneyev M-14P radial. Unlike the tandem Yak-52, the 18T has side-by-side front seats with a rear bench, making it the only side-by-side four-seat production aircraft from the Yakovlev stable. It is fully aerobatic to +6.4/-3.2 g at reduced gross weight (1,510 kg), relaxed to +5/-2.5 g at the 1,650 kg MTOW. Performance
The Yak-18T's book cruise of 110-130 KTAS (180-210 km/h) is misleading to Western pilots accustomed to Lycoming-powered four-seaters — this is economy cruise at approximately 55% power, burning around 14-15 gph. Push the M-14P to 75% and the airplane will run 140-150 KTAS at a cost of 17-18 gph; max continuous yields roughly 161 knots but few owners operate there because the radial drinks accordingly. The engine loves to be run hard but punishes short-field cold starts — preheat and hand-pulling the prop through multiple blades is mandatory to clear hydraulic lock in the lower cylinders, a standard radial-engine discipline.
Climb performance is authoritative: 980 fpm at gross on a standard day, and noticeably better light. Service ceiling of 13,000 ft (4,000 m) reflects the non-turbocharged radial's density-altitude sensitivity; density altitude operations above 8,000 ft DA noticeably blunt climb. The airplane is heavy on the controls by GA standards — more P-51 than Skyhawk — with substantial stick forces in pitch and a tendency to want lots of rudder in the climb due to the torque and P-factor of the big radial. Stall characteristics are benign with clear buffet onset, and the retractable gear and flaps are pneumatically actuated from an onboard air bottle (charged by an engine-driven compressor), a classic Soviet design choice that eliminates hydraulic leaks but requires discipline managing bottle pressure.
Payload & Range
With a useful load of approximately 955 lb and full standard fuel (48 gal / 290 lb), the Yak-18T offers roughly 665 lb of payload — enough for two average adults plus light baggage, or three adults if passengers are slim. The "four-seat" billing is optimistic with full fuel: a genuine four-up departure requires fuel reduction to approximately 30-35 gallons, cutting range to around 260-300 nm with VFR reserves. The extended-range fuel option (96 gal) on Series 36 aircraft dramatically improves full-fuel range to roughly 800 nm but further reduces full-fuel payload to approximately 375 lb — effectively a two-person long-haul configuration.

- Full fuel, 2 pax + bags: Straightforward; 400+ nm comfortable legs at 125-140 KTAS.
- Full fuel, 4 pax: Over gross. Not feasible.
- 30 gal fuel, 4 adults, light bags: Feasible at 3,638 lb gross; plan 250-280 nm legs.
- Aerobatic (3,330 lb / 1,510 kg limit): Solo or two-up with reduced fuel only; cannot perform full-g aerobatics at 4-up weight.
Mission Suitability
- Flight Training (4/10): Historically Aeroflot's primary civil trainer, but in the US market the experimental-exhibition certificate generally prohibits flight-for-hire and restricts training to the owner. Unsuitable as a rental trainer; acceptable for owner-pilot transition training under appropriate CFI authorization. High operating cost, specialized systems (pneumatic gear/flaps, radial engine management), and parts specificity make it a poor primary trainer but an excellent step-up airplane for complex/high-performance endorsements for committed owners. - Business Travel (3/10): Experimental-Exhibition certification and operating limitations typically preclude business use. Speed and comfort are adequate; regulatory and reliability profile is not.
- Cargo / Backcountry / Surveying (2-3/10): Retractable gear, low wing, sensitive prop clearance, and no real useful load advantage make it poorly suited to utility missions.
Avionics Ecosystem
Soviet-delivered Yak-18Ts arrived with Russian-language analog panels: artificial horizon, DGI, altimeter calibrated in meters, ASI in km/h, RSBN/ARK radio navigation, and R-800 VHF comm. Most US-imported airframes have undergone some degree of Westernization:
- Entry tier ($45-75k aircraft): Original Russian instrumentation with a single added Garmin GNC 255 or GTR 200 VHF comm and a handheld GPS. Knots/feet conversion placards on the panel.

STCs & Modifications
Because the Yak-18T has no US type certificate, "STCs" are not the relevant mechanism — modifications are authorized on an owner/DAR basis against the aircraft's Experimental-Exhibition operating limitations. Common modifications:
