Overview
The Yakovlev Yak-52 is a tandem two-seat primary aerobatic trainer designed by the Yakovlev OKB in the Soviet Union and built under COMECON agreement by Aerostar S.A. in Bacău, Romania. First flown in 1976 and entering series production in 1979, the type was the standard primary trainer of DOSAAF (the Soviet paramilitary flight training organization) and went on to train tens of thousands of Soviet, Warsaw Pact, and post-Soviet military pilots. Over 1,800 were produced through 1998, with peak output of roughly 150 airframes per year. Aerostar continued low-volume production on request into the 2000s.
In Western hands the Yak-52 occupies a niche somewhere between a warbird and a serious aerobatic mount. It looks and sounds like a piston-era fighter — big nine-cylinder radial, tandem canopy, constant-chord low wing, pneumatic semi-retractable gear with wheels that sit partially exposed when retracted (the same "bubble gear" philosophy as the Yak-18 and FW-190). It is certificated nowhere in the West as a standard-category aircraft. In the United States it is operated on an FAA Experimental Exhibition airworthiness certificate, which imposes program letters, geographic limits, and prohibitions on compensation for carriage. In the UK and Europe most examples fly on national-permit schemes (LAA Permit to Fly in the UK).
Typical owners are ex-military pilots, formation aerobatic enthusiasts, upset-prevention and recovery training (UPRT) providers, and warbird collectors who want a tailwheel-feel airplane at a tenth of the cost of a T-6 or P-51. Post-production, many Russian and Western shops have produced "Yak-52W" style upgrades aftermarket — the factory designation is not always a reliable indicator of installed equipment, so inspect the panel yourself.
Performance
The published 285 km/h (177 mph) maximum and 190 km/h (118 mph) cruise at 1,000 m understate what owners actually plan for. A clean Yak-52 at 65–70% power will true around 110–120 KTAS burning 14 gph of 100LL. That is not fast for 360 horsepower — the big round engine, fixed fairings over the mains, and draggy canopy cost a lot of knots — but the airplane was designed for sustained aerobatic torque and vertical performance, not cruise efficiency.
Climb is the Yak-52's party trick. At light weights with two aboard, 2,000 fpm from sea level is realistic and 3,000 fpm is occasionally reported. Published rate of climb is 1,380 fpm at gross. The service ceiling is only about 13,000 ft, which is normal for a low-compression radial without supercharging; density altitude is not friendly above 8,000 ft MSL.
Range is the airplane's biggest operational limitation. With 32 US gal standard, at 14–16 gph, you have roughly 90 minutes of useful fuel plus reserve. Plan ~250–300 NM legs at most. The Yak-52TW's extra wing tanks (32 USG additional) push that closer to 500 NM and turn the airplane into a reasonable cross-country mount.
The Yak-52 stalls honestly with the big wing providing generous warning buffet. It will not depart controlled flight easily unless provoked, and recovers aggressively from every classical aerobatic figure. The 7G/-5G envelope supports advanced aerobatics — loops, rolls, hammerheads, Cuban eights, inverted flight up to the 2-minute oil-system limit, snap rolls, and moderate tumbling — but it is not an unlimited-category airframe. Competition pilots move to yakovlev-yak-55m, sukhoi-su26-su29, or an Extra for the rolling vertical work the Yak-52 cannot sustain.
Payload & Range
The Yak-52 has the best fuel-versus-payload tradeoff of any classical warbird trainer but is constrained in absolute terms:

- Two 180-lb pilots with parachutes (~200 lb each) + full fuel: ~47 lb over — realistic operations fly with chutes, two pilots, and ~24 USG of fuel (typical 60-minute aerobatic sortie).
- Baggage: essentially none — a small hat shelf behind the rear seat. Plan on carry-on only.
For a 300 NM cross-country with full fuel (32 USG), plan 2.0 hours block + 30 min reserve, leaving roughly 75 minutes of useful range (~140 NM with reserve). The Yak-52TW's 64 USG changes the picture completely — nearly 4 hours endurance and 450 NM practical legs.
For aerobatic sorties the operational rule of thumb is "full main tank, two chuted pilots, no baggage, 45-minute flight" and land with 10 USG reserve. Aerobatic fuel burn climbs to 16–18 gph on the inverted system.

Mission Suitability
Aerobatics (9/10): The airplane exists for this mission. 7G/-5G, inverted systems, honest departures, forgiving recovery behavior, and the visceral sound and feel of a big radial. Ideal for sportsman and intermediate category competition, formation aerobatics, and upset training. Loses a point only because it cannot run with unlimited-category purpose-built monoplanes. Local Fun Flying (9/10): Few airplanes generate more grins per hour. The radial start ritual, the sliding canopy, the tandem view, and the fighter-like handling make every weekend flight feel like an event. Parts and fuel cost keep this below 10.
Flight Training (4/10): Not a primary trainer in the Western sense. Complex, tailwheel-adjacent, pneumatic systems, ex-military checkout, experimental exhibition restrictions, and no realistic path to a rental fleet. Excellent for transition training, formation, and UPRT if the student already has a PPL.
Cross-Country (3/10): Standard airplane has ~90 min useful endurance, no IFR certification, a draggy airframe cruising at 115 KTAS, no baggage to speak of, and a thirsty 100LL appetite. The Yak-52TW with aux tanks is noticeably better but still a weekend trip machine.
Backcountry (2/10): Low wing, semi-retractable gear with small tires, experimental exhibition operating limitations, and no STOL characteristics. Wrong tool.
Business Travel (1/10), Cargo (1/10), Surveying (1/10): Experimental exhibition category prohibits compensation for carriage, there is no baggage compartment, and the airplane's operational footprint is incompatible with utility flying.
Avionics Ecosystem
Factory Yak-52s shipped with Soviet metric instruments: airspeed in km/h, altitude in meters, VSI in m/s, Russian-language placards, and a period VOR/ADF suite that is essentially useless in Western airspace. Nearly every airworthy US example has been repaneled to some degree.
Tier 1 — "Unrestored Soviet" ($0 panel value): All-metric gauges, original compass, no transponder, sometimes a handheld radio velcroed to the coaming. Cheap to buy but realistically needs immediate work for any practical operation.
Tier 2 — "Basic Western" (~$6–12K installed): Imperial airspeed and altimeter, VSI in fpm, a modern com (TY91 or similar), Mode S transponder with ADS-B Out (GDL82 or uAvionix tailBeacon X), panel-mount GPS or iPad via Bluetooth, intercom. Tier 3 — "Glass Aerobatic Panel" ($15–30K installed): Garmin G5 or GI-275 attitude and HSI pair, GTR 205 or GNC 215, GTX 335 transponder, aerobatic-capable G-meter, engine monitor (JPI EDM-730 or EI CGR-30P) reading CHT/EGT on all nine cylinders, oil temp and oil pressure. Experimental category permits non-TSO avionics which keeps cost down relative to certified installs.
The Yak-52 has no autopilot and no realistic path to one — the pneumatic control system and experimental exhibition operating limits make it impractical.

STCs & Modifications
Because the Yak-52 is not FAA type certified, there are no STCs in the traditional sense. Modifications are accomplished via experimental operating limitations and owner-accepted changes, and fall into recognized patterns:
- Three-blade MT composite propeller (~$15–20K installed): replaces the heavy two-blade V530TA-D35 wooden constant-speed prop. Noticeable reduction in vibration, better ground clearance, smoother idle, and eliminates the notorious "turn nine blades before start" hydraulic-lock ritual to some extent.
- M-14PF 400 HP upgrade (~$15K premium at overhaul): higher-compression pistons and revised camshaft yielding 400 HP. Mostly chosen by Yak-55M and Sukhoi operators but available in Yak-52 installations.
- Inverted system refurbishment (~$3–5K): replacing aging flop-tube and oil separator components to restore reliable inverted capability.
- Electric starter conversion: replaces air-start reliance for the compressed-air bottle, adds redundancy. Standard on Yak-52TW.
- Tip tanks / auxiliary wing tanks on non-TW airframes (~$8K): mimics the TW fuel capacity improvement.
- Canopy conversion to one-piece bubble or plexi replacement: cosmetic and visibility improvement.
- Western brakes (Cleveland) conversion: replaces the original pneumatic differential brake system, which is notoriously difficult to modulate for Western pilots accustomed to toe brakes. Significant safety improvement but invasive.
Maintenance & Support
The maintenance ecosystem is the single biggest risk in Yak-52 ownership and the reason the airplane is not more popular. Because it is experimental and foreign-built, owners rely on a small network of Yak specialists rather than any competent A&P.
Parts availability — fair and worsening: Most airframe and engine parts originate in Russia (Ivchenko-Vedeneyev) and Romania (Aerostar). Post-February 2022 Russian sanctions and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war have materially disrupted supply chains for M-14P parts, pneumatic valves, and Yakovlev-specific hardware. Romanian Aerostar supply is intact and still producing small batches, but lead times have stretched and prices have climbed substantially. Some parts now arrive via third-country transshipment. Ukrainian Yak-52 fleets (many ex-DOSAAF) are being converted to drone-interception aircraft by both sides in 2024–2025, further stressing the used-parts pipeline.
M-14P engine support: three Western specialists keep the type alive — M-14P Inc. (Florida, USA), Termikas (Lithuania, the primary blueprinted-overhaul shop), and Barrett Precision Engines (Oklahoma). Complete overhauls run $23–35K plus freight; top overhauls $7–10K. TBO is officially 750 hours but owners routinely extend on condition via borescope and oil analysis programs. A cylinder assembly is ~$2,500; a full set is $20K+.
A&P familiarity — specialist: a typical Western A&P has never seen a pneumatic-start radial or a Soviet airframe and cannot legally sign off experimental exhibition aircraft without owner-accepted work. Valuation Factors
US market price range is approximately $55K–$125K with a typical mid-time, Western-paneled airplane near $80K. Drivers:
- Hours since engine overhaul: the M-14P has a factory TBO of only 750 hours (some authorities quote 500 for military use, 750–1,000 on civil). A mid-time engine (300+ hours remaining) is worth $15–25K over a run-out. A zero-timed M-14P from a reputable shop (Barrett, M-14P Inc., Termikas) adds $25–30K.
- Yak-52TW premium: factory tailwheel airframes command a $20–30K premium over tricycle-gear examples due to scarcity, the 64 USG fuel system, and the three-blade prop.
- Panel upgrade state: a Tier-3 glass panel adds $15–20K in resale but rarely recovers full install cost.
- Service bulletin compliance: uncomplied spar and rudder bulletins are a hard discount of $8–15K.
- Documentation: Aerostar logbooks and original Romanian Air Force or DOSAAF service history add value; airplanes with gaps in their post-import logs are discounted heavily.
- Paint and interior: mostly cosmetic but Soviet-era interior plastics are unobtainium, so nicely preserved originals are worth more than sloppy refurbishments.

ADs & Common Problems
The Yak-52 has no FAA ADs — it is not type certified. Instead, operators follow Yakovlev/Aerostar factory service bulletins plus UK LAA mandatory permit requirements, which the insurance market effectively treats as ADs:
- Wing spar strengthening (Bulletins 59/60 and 107) — the most expensive recurring item. Verify compliance in the logbook before purchase; non-compliant airframes can cost $10K+ to bring current.
- Rudder attachment strengthening — check for replacement screws indicating the mod is in.
- Control surface fabric — early production aircraft used poor-quality Soviet fabric prone to delamination. Verify Ceconite or equivalent recover has been done.
- Floating objects control interference mod — a loose object mod preventing debris from jamming control runs; ensure installed.
Common operational problems:
- Pneumatic system leaks: the undercarriage rams, brake valves, and flap cylinders are the usual suspects. Detect by charging the air system and listening with the panel open. Ram seal overhaul is cheap (~$200/ram) but cumulative leaks ground the airplane.
- Hydraulic lock in the lower cylinders: oil pools in the lower cylinders when the airplane sits, and starting without hand-turning the prop nine blades can bend a connecting rod — a catastrophic and expensive failure. Religious pre-start prop-pull discipline is mandatory.
- Chip detector illumination / metal in oil: indicates cam, lifter, or master-rod damage. Treat as airplane-grounding until investigated.
- Rust from outdoor storage: the M-14P is steel-cylinder and does not tolerate long idle periods outdoors. Any airplane that has sat more than 6 months needs a borescope inspection before flight.
- Airframe corrosion: wing-attach fittings, lower fuselage longerons, and the tailcone are the inspection priorities. Eastern European airframes were not always stored or painted to Western standards.
- 600-hour major airframe overhaul cycle per factory manual — a significant scheduled event that many owners extend via LAA/FAA approved alternate programs, but insurance underwriters notice.
- Wheels-up landings: more common than on Western retractables because of the pneumatic gear squat switch system. Post-incident engine shock-load inspection is mandatory.
Insurance Profile
The Yak-52 sits in one of the hardest insurance pools in general aviation. Underwriters treat it as warbird-adjacent: ex-military, tandem, high-performance, retractable, aerobatic, foreign-manufactured, with mandatory model-specific training.
Typical hull premium runs 2.5–4% of hull value annually — roughly $2,500–$5,000 per year on an $80–125K hull. Liability-only can be written for experienced pilots at $1,500–2,500. Requirements almost always include:
- Minimum 500 total time, 100 tailwheel (for TW), 25 in type with a qualified Yak-52 CFI
- Annual recurrent training with a signoff
- Formation aerobatic operations require FAST or similar formation qualification card
- No passenger carriage under experimental exhibition restrictions unless specifically program-lettered
