All-in at ~100 flying hours a year, using the midpoint of each range — the same figures broken out under “Cost to own” below. Your number will differ, and mostly for two reasons. Experience sets your insurance: a 2,000-hour pilot with recent training pays 30–40% less than a 200-hour owner, and student owners pay 20–40% more — on the same aircraft that is often a doubling. Location sets your hangar: a T-hangar runs $200–400 a month in the Midwest against $400–1,500 in a coastal metro, and an outside tie-down is less again. Engine reserves move too — a local shop reusing your serviceable cylinders can come in 30–50% under the national specialty-shop pricing we quote, though you trade the warranty and turnaround that comes with it. Reserves are money set aside toward a future overhaul, not a bill this year, and the annual inspection figure is the shop’s labor to look — whatever they find is separate.

Estimate, not a quote. Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. Annual inspection is the shop's labor to open and inspect — what they find is the maintenance line, which covers oil changes, plugs, tires, brakes, hoses, lights, a battery and vacuum pump amortised over their life, and the unscheduled squawks that are the largest and least predictable part of it. Reserves are sinking funds toward an overhaul, not a bill you pay this year — and note that a propeller is due on hours or calendar time, typically six years, so flying less does not put it off forever.

Overview

The Questair Venture is a barrel-shaped, all-metal, two-place high-performance kit aircraft designed by Jim Griswold — the former chief engineer of the Piper Malibu — and first flown on July 1, 1987. Founded in the mid-1980s by Griswold and Ed MacDonough, Questair, Inc. aimed to deliver certified-airplane build quality in an owner-assembled package by using computer-controlled jigs and pre-formed multi-curvature aluminum panels. The result is one of the fastest normally-aspirated two-seat piston airplanes ever offered to homebuilders: 240 KTAS on 14.5 gph from a Continental IO-550-G turning a McCauley constant-speed prop.

The nickname "egg with legs" captures the Venture's aesthetic perfectly — an extremely short, fat fuselage (16 ft 3 in long) mated to a tiny 27.5 ft wing. That stubby planform, combined with a 310+ lb/hp power-to-weight ratio and retractable gear, produces climb rates north of 2,500 fpm and top speeds of 250+ KIAS at sea level. Questair filed Chapter 11 in 1991, re-emerged with the fixed-gear three-seat Spirit variant, went dormant, and was revived in 2013 by Questair LLC (Dan Myers and Jim Cook) at John Bell Williams Airport in Bolton, Mississippi. Approximately 30 Ventures and 3 Spirits are flying worldwide — the Venture is very much an orphan-support aircraft with a tiny but passionate owner community, and it is not an airplane for a first-time builder or a low-time pilot. This page covers the Venture. The Spirit is mechanically very similar but slower (~220 KTAS) due to the fixed main gear and has a marginal rear bench that is more "children and light bags" than a true third seat.

Performance

Book numbers are aggressive but broadly achievable. At 12,000 ft, 2,350 RPM / 23" MP typically yields 240 KTAS on ~14.5 gph LOP — a specific range that rivals anything piston and beats most Bonanzas on fuel per NM. Down low, the Venture is genuinely a 250 KIAS airplane, but drag rises sharply above 270 and Vno (265 KIAS) is easy to exceed inadvertently in a shallow descent.

Climb performance is exceptional: 2,500+ fpm at sea level and better than 1,500 fpm through 10,000 ft. Vy is surprisingly high at 130 KIAS — the tiny wing wants speed, and climbing at 90 KIAS (Vx) puts you on the back side of the power curve fast. Stall speeds are honest (61 KIAS dirty, 68 KIAS clean) but the high wing loading (27.5 lb/sq ft) means approach speeds feel jet-like: 90–95 KIAS over the fence is typical, and energy management is everything. Short-field performance is misleading on paper because arrival speeds eat up the runway — plan on 3,000+ ft of usable pavement in practice. Service ceiling is about 20,000 ft, well into oxygen territory.

Payload & Range

With 800 lb useful load and 324 lb of fuel at full tanks (54 gal × 6 lb/gal):

  • Full fuel, 2 pax: 476 lb for two people and baggage. Two 180-lb adults leaves 116 lb for bags — practical for a cross-country weekend but tight for bulky gear. Range at that loading: the full 1,000 NM VFR / 800 NM IFR book range.
  • Two heavy adults (220 lb each) + 50 lb bags: 490 lb payload requires dropping fuel to ~310 lb (52 gal) — essentially no compromise, still ~950 NM VFR range.
  • Single pilot, max fuel: ~620 lb of flexibility — easy 1,000 NM trips at book numbers. The Venture is genuinely a single-tank coast-to-coast airplane from most of the central U.S.
  • Baggage volume, not weight, is the real limit. The baggage area behind the seats is small and shaped awkwardly around the wing spar — soft bags only, and forget golf clubs.

The Venture is ideal for a pilot or pilot-plus-one who values speed and range over payload flexibility; it will not do the work of a Bonanza or a Cirrus, but on a per-mile and per-dollar-of-fuel basis, it out-cruises both.

Mission Suitability

Cross-country (9/10): This is the Venture's reason for existence. 240 KTAS, 1,000 NM VFR range, 800 NM IFR reserves, and 14.5 gph make it one of the most efficient high-speed cruisers in any category. Two-seat limitation and modest baggage area are the only ceilings on the score. See Cross-Country Flying.

Local fun flying (8/10): Fighter-like visibility, +6/-3g solo envelope, fingertip control forces, and a ramp presence unlike anything else make it a blast for the pilot who just wants to go fly. See Local Fun Flying.

Business travel (7/10): Fast enough to compete with light twins and even some turboprops on 500–700 NM legs; only two seats and limited baggage hold it back. Works well for a single traveler or couple.

Aerobatics (3/10): Aerobatic-capable per the load envelope (+6/-3g solo) and some owners do mild aerobatics, but the high wing loading, high entry speeds, and orphan structural support discourage serious aerobatic use. Not marketed as an aerobatic airplane.

Flight training (1/10): Absolutely not a trainer. Insurance is prohibitive for low-time pilots; handling is demanding; approach speeds are high; gear is retractable; minimum recommended pilot experience is typically 500+ hours with retract and high-performance endorsements.

Backcountry (1/10): Retractable gear, fragile belly, 90+ KIAS approach speeds. Do not land on dirt.

Cargo hauling (1/10): 800 lb useful with 324 lb of fuel leaves ~470 lb for two people and bags. Small baggage volume.

Surveying (2/10): Too fast for any serious survey work; visibility is good but cruise speeds are wrong for photo runs.

Avionics Ecosystem

  • Original-era panels (1987–2000 builds): Round-gauge King or Narco stacks, often with a single KX-155, KN-53, and loran. Expect 50–80% of current ownership cost to go to panel upgrades.
  • Mid-life glass (2005–2015 retrofits): Dynon SkyView or Garmin G3X Touch, single or dual screens, GTN 650, GTX 345 ADS-B, TruTrak or GRT autopilot integrated with the EFIS.
  • Modern builds and refreshes (2018+): Dual Garmin G3X Touch with GFC 500 (experimental variant), GTN 750Xi, GI 275 backup, engine monitor (EI CGR-30P or Garmin EIS). A modern two-screen panel runs $45k–$70k installed.

IFR capability is straightforward — the airframe is stable enough, the panel space is limited by the tiny cabin, and most cross-country-oriented owners build for hard IFR.

STCs & Modifications

STCs do not apply to experimental-amateur-built aircraft; modifications are at the builder's discretion under the original airworthiness certificate. Common owner mods:

  • Engine upgrades: A handful of owners have stepped up to the IO-550-N (310 hp) for additional climb margin. Adds ~$15–25k over a standard -G overhaul.
  • Prop upgrades: MT 3-blade composite conversion (~$12k) for smoother operation and small cruise gains; some owners report 3–5 kt improvement and reduced cabin vibration.
  • Winglets / speed mods: Not common — the airframe is already near its drag limit.
  • Fuel system: Some owners add a small aux tank (+8–10 gal) to push IFR range past 900 NM.
  • Interior / soundproofing: The Venture is notoriously loud; ANR headsets are mandatory and many owners invest in Dynamat-style treatments.

Maintenance & Support

  • Parts availability: Poor. Engine and prop parts flow through standard Continental/McCauley channels. Airframe-specific parts (canopy, gear components, cowling, fairings) must come from Questair LLC (Bolton, MS) or be fabricated one-off. Lead times of 3–6 months are common.
  • Mechanic familiarity: Rare. Outside a small network of owners and the Mississippi factory, essentially no A&P has worked on one before. Expect to educate your mechanic and supervise closely.
  • Annual inspection cost: $2,500–5,000 with a repairman cert; $5,000–9,000 without.
  • Operating cost: At 100 hours/year, total direct operating cost runs $180–240/hr including reserves — cheap per NM given the speed, but absolute dollars are significant.
  • Expensive items: IO-550 overhaul ($50–60k), prop overhaul ($3–4k), canopy replacement (if available at all, $8–15k+), gear actuator rebuild ($3–5k).
  • Community: A small owners' group (Questair Owners' Association, informally) and the Mississippi factory provide the bulk of tribal knowledge. Lose that resource and the type becomes extremely hard to support.

  • Price range: Market is thin. Project/non-flying airframes: $50–80k. Flying, older-panel examples: $95–140k. Well-sorted, modern-panel, low-SMOH examples: $160–220k. A 2026 Controller listing sat at $194,500 for a nicely equipped example in Ontario.
  • Engine SMOH: Because the IO-550 overhaul is ~$55k, hours since major drive the price more than almost any other factor. A runout engine can knock $40k off an asking price.
  • Panel: Glass-panel Venture with GTN 750 and GFC 500 adds $40–60k over a round-gauge example.
  • Builder reputation: Ventures built by known quality builders (or under supervision at Questair's Greensboro or Bolton facilities) command a 15–25% premium over unknown-builder examples.
  • Repairman certificate: Original builders hold the repairman cert, which dramatically lowers annual condition inspection cost. Non-builder owners must hire an A&P each year (see Maintenance Ecosystem).
  • Liquidity: Days-on-market for Ventures routinely run 6–18 months. This is not a liquid asset.

ADs & Common Problems

No airworthiness directives apply (experimental category). Recurring issues reported by the owner community and NTSB records:

  • Landing gear system: The electrically-driven retractable gear is a known weak point; actuators, microswitches, and the gear doors require careful inspection. Gear-up landings are a disproportionate share of the accident history.
  • Engine cooling: The tight cowling around the IO-550 runs warm; CHT management on climb-out is a constant pilot task. Baffle cracks and air leaks are common squawks.
  • High-speed handling discipline: Multiple overstress events in the fleet from descents exceeding Vno/Vne in turbulence.
  • Orphan airframe parts: Canopy, gear doors, cowling, and some custom brackets are effectively unobtanium outside of the Questair LLC support channel.
  • Fuel system vents: Venting issues have caused fuel starvation events during uncoordinated flight — thorough pre-buy inspection of the vent lines is essential.

Pre-buy red flags: unknown gear cycle count, poor CHT history, hard-landing damage (the stubby fuselage transmits loads poorly), any sign of aileron flutter or overspeed event, and builders with no prior kit experience.

  • Hull premiums: Roughly 3.5–5% of hull value annually — a $180k Venture typically costs $4,000–6,000/year to insure.
  • Liability: $1M smooth limits are generally unavailable; most policies cap at $1M/$100k per passenger.
  • Underwriting requirements: Typical minimums are 500+ TT, 100+ retract, 25+ high-performance, instrument rating, and a checkout with a Venture-experienced pilot or a type-specific transition course. Fresh private pilots are effectively uninsurable in the type.
  • Only a handful of carriers (Starr, Global, Avemco for low limits) will quote the Venture, and quotes can take weeks.
