Performance

The PA-14's book cruise of 96 KTAS at 75% power is achievable in clean, light-loading conditions, burning approximately 6.5 GPH. Real-world cruise with typical loading trends closer to 90-93 KTAS. The 115 HP Lycoming O-235 is adequate for two occupants but becomes noticeably marginal when loaded to gross weight with four people, particularly at higher density altitudes.

Climb performance at 600 fpm (book) is optimistic at gross weight on warm days. Expect 400-500 fpm in real-world conditions with meaningful loading. The airplane is not a mountain performer, and density altitude management is essential for safe four-seat operations.

The slotted flaps are the PA-14's best feature for short-field work, providing noticeably better approach control than the PA-12's plain flaps. Takeoff ground roll of 720 feet and landing roll of 470 feet are respectable for a 115 HP four-seater, though not in the same league as the Super Cub.

Light and nimble for local flying. The PA-14 feels like a different airplane at well under gross weight: climbs better, handles crisper, and the 115 HP feels entirely adequate. This is the configuration where the airplane is most fun.

Mission Suitability

Flight Training (3/10): The PA-14 is not a practical trainer. Its rarity makes parts and specialized knowledge scarce, and insurance for training use would be prohibitively expensive for a 238-unit production run. A Super Cub or Citabria is far more practical for tailwheel training.

Backcountry (5/10): The tailwheel configuration and low stall speed give the PA-14 basic backcountry capability, but the 115 HP engine is marginal for serious bush operations at gross weight. The airplane works for light backcountry use with two occupants but lacks the power and community modification ecosystem of the Super Cub. Some owners have installed larger tires and minor STOL modifications.
