Note: There is technically only one model PA-12, but each surviving example is individually characterized by its STC modifications. The community informally grades PA-12s by installed engine horsepower: stock 108 HP examples, 125 HP, 135 HP, 150 HP, and 180 HP configurations represent effectively different airplanes in terms of performance. The 150 HP engine STC is considered the "big one" that transforms the airplane's utility, particularly for backcountry work.

The PA-12's immediate predecessor was the PA-12 Cruiser (often confused with the Super Cruiser), which was a three-seat version powered by a Continental A-65. Production was limited, and the model was quickly superseded by the Lycoming-powered Super Cruiser.

Performance

The stock PA-12 with its 108 HP Lycoming O-235 cruises at approximately 91 KTAS (105 mph), a significant step up from the PA-11's 75 KTAS. Rate of climb is 600 fpm at sea level -- adequate for a 1,750-lb airplane but not exhilarating. The later 115 HP takeoff-rated variant does not meaningfully increase cruise speed but provides better takeoff performance and approximately 700 fpm initial climb.

The PA-12's standout number is range. With 38 gallons of fuel burning 6-7 GPH at economy cruise, the airplane can cover over 500 nm with a comfortable reserve. This is touring-airplane range in a backcountry-capable airframe -- a combination that few aircraft of any era can match at this price point.

"60 mph is the magic speed for almost everything" is a common PA-12 adage. Climb at 60 mph, descend at 60 mph, fly the pattern at 60 mph. The airplane is straightforward and predictable. Stall speed of approximately 42 KIAS clean (36 KIAS with slips or modified flaps) keeps approach speeds comfortably low for short-field work.

Short-field performance is good but not exceptional in stock configuration. The 720-foot takeoff ground roll and 470-foot landing roll are longer than the J-3 or PA-11 due to the higher gross weight, but the PA-12 still accesses grass strips that would exclude most modern four-seat aircraft. With a 150 HP engine STC and flap STC installed, takeoff rolls decrease substantially, and the airplane becomes a legitimate backcountry performer.

The service ceiling of 12,600 feet is adequate for operations in the western United States, though climb rate above 8,000 feet density altitude with a stock 108 HP engine and full gross weight is marginal. The 150 HP conversion addresses this limitation decisively.

Flight Training (4/10): Not a primary trainer due to the three-seat configuration and wider fuselage. The tandem seating is offset (pilot left, observer right-rear and left-rear), making instructor-student communication different from a side-by-side trainer. Useful for tailwheel transition training, particularly for pilots who will fly larger tailwheel aircraft. Backcountry (8/10): This is where the PA-12 excels, particularly in modified form. Stock, it is a competent backcountry airplane limited primarily by the 108 HP engine's performance at high density altitudes. Airworthiness Directives
