Overview

The Beechcraft Model 35 Bonanza, introduced in 1947, is one of the most iconic aircraft in general aviation history. Its distinctive V-tail design made it instantly recognizable and earned it the nickname "the doctor killer" — an unfair but persistent label stemming from its involvement in accidents often attributed to pilots transitioning into high-performance retractable aircraft without adequate training.

Walter Beech and his team designed the Bonanza as a postwar revolution: all-metal low-wing monoplane with retractable tricycle gear at a time when most GA aircraft were taildraggers with fixed gear. The original Model 35 debuted with 165HP and was an immediate commercial success.

Early models (35 through H35) span the evolution from the 165HP Continental E-185 through the 240HP O-470-G, representing a decade of incremental improvements. Approximately 3,100 early V-tail Bonanzas were produced between 1947 and 1957. Over 10,000 V-tail Bonanzas were built across all models before production ended in 1982.

Performance

The H35 representative cruise of 152 KTAS is respectable for 240HP, though later V-tail models with fuel-injected IO-470s and IO-520s would push well past 170 KTAS. Early E-185-powered models (35 through A35) cruise closer to 130-135 KTAS.

Real-world performance varies significantly across the early range. The jump from the E-185 (165HP) to the O-470-G (240HP) in the H35 represents a transformational improvement in climb rate, cruise speed, and useful load. Pre-H35 models feel noticeably underpowered by modern standards.

The V-tail configuration provides slightly less drag than a conventional tail, contributing 2-4 knots of speed advantage. However, the coupled pitch-yaw response of the ruddervators requires deliberate pilot technique, particularly in turbulence.

With tip tanks (60 gal total), range extends to 650+ nm but payload decreases accordingly. The early Bonanzas' 2,900 lb gross weight limits full-fuel/full-seats scenarios more than later models at 3,400 lbs.

Mission Suitability

  • Flight Training (2): Insurance costs are prohibitive for training use. Complex retractable with high approach speeds is inappropriate for primary training. Only suitable for advanced complex/HP endorsement training.
