Overview

The American Champion Scout 8GCBC is the utility workhorse of the Champion/Citabria family — a purpose-built bush plane, glider towplane, and aerial work platform. While derived from the same Aeronca Champion lineage as the Citabria and Decathlon, the Scout is a fundamentally different aircraft optimized for hauling, STOL operations, and endurance rather than aerobatics.

Key differences from the Citabria: the Scout has a 36-foot wingspan (vs 33-34 feet), 180 sq ft wing area (vs 165 sq ft), 2,150 lbs gross weight (vs 1,650 lbs), 180HP O-360 engine standard, and optional 70-gallon fuel tanks providing 6.8+ hours endurance and over 800 nm range. The larger wing area and lower wing loading give the Scout excellent STOL and load-carrying ability.

The Scout has been in continuous production since 1974. More than 500 were built by 2008, and production continues at American Champion Aircraft in Rochester, Wisconsin. The current production Denali Scout (2011+) features a 210HP fuel-injected Lycoming IO-390 for enhanced performance in demanding backcountry environments.

The Scout is MOSAIC eligible (Vs1 ~48 KIAS, gross weight 2,150 lbs).

The Denali Scout with the fuel-injected IO-390 at 210HP is the premium variant — fuel injection eliminates carb ice concerns critical for mountain flying, and the 30HP increase dramatically improves hot/high performance. The optional 70-gallon long-range tanks transform the Scout into an endurance platform capable of 6.8+ hours in the air.

Performance

The Scout cruises at 113 KTAS (130 MPH) at 75% power on 10.3 GPH. At 55% economy cruise, fuel burn drops to 7.7 GPH. With standard 36-gallon tanks, range is 361 nm. With the optional 70-gallon tanks, range extends to 838 nm at economy cruise — remarkable endurance for a bush plane.

The Scout's 180 sq ft wing (vs 165 sq ft on the Citabria) and 2,150 lbs gross weight give it a wing loading of only 11.9 lbs/sq ft — among the lowest in certified GA. This translates to excellent slow-flight handling, low stall speeds (43 KIAS flaps down), and genuine STOL capability. At light weights, ground roll can be as short as 210 feet.

Rate of climb at 1,075 FPM is adequate rather than impressive — the Scout is a hauler, not a climber. The 180HP engine is working harder at 2,150 lbs gross than the Citabria's 150HP at 1,650 lbs. The Denali Scout's 210HP significantly improves climb performance.

The Scout's payload flexibility is its greatest strength. With standard 36-gallon tanks, two adults with 134 lbs of cargo and 361 nm range. With the 70-gallon tanks, solo with 130 lbs of cargo and 838 nm range — exceptional endurance for survey, patrol, or long-distance ferry flying. Mission Suitability

  • Flight Training (5): Used for tailwheel transition training and specifically for glider tow pilot training. Not a primary trainer — too specialized and expensive. Good for teaching bush flying techniques.
  • Backcountry (8): Excellent bush plane.   • Surveying (8): Outstanding survey platform. The combination of excellent slow-flight characteristics, long endurance (6.8+ hours with 70-gallon tanks), high-wing downward visibility, and stable low-speed handling make the Scout ideal for pipeline patrol, wildlife survey, and aerial observation. Used extensively in these roles.
