Overview
The Republic RC-3 SeaBee is a postwar all-metal, four-seat amphibious flying boat designed by Percival H. "Spence" Spencer and built by Republic Aviation in Farmingdale, New York. Republic, known for wartime fighters like the P-47 Thunderbolt, pivoted to the general aviation boom and produced 1,060 SeaBees between 1946 and 1947 before shutting the line down as the postwar GA bubble collapsed. Despite a short production run, the SeaBee earned a devoted cult following that persists 80 years later, with roughly 250 still on the U.S. registry and an active community centered on the International Republic Seabee Owners Club.
The airplane is unmistakable: high-mounted wing, bluff metal hull, and a pusher propeller mounted on a pylon behind the cabin. The cabin is cavernous for a four-seater — 5 ft 4 in wide — with a huge flat windshield and car-like doors. It was marketed as "everyman's amphibian," and in practice the stock Franklin-powered airplane is underpowered, slow, and thirsty, with anemic climb off water at gross. That reputation is what drove a 70-year cottage industry of engine conversions that transform the airplane into something genuinely capable. Today a "SeaBee" on the used market could mean a 215 hp stock bird puttering around a local lake or a 300+ hp Simuflight-converted airplane with modern avionics and a real payload-range envelope.

Frontmatter above reflects the stock Franklin-powered RC-3. A typical mid-market SeaBee for sale in 2025 is actually a Simuflight IO-540 or GO-480 conversion, and buyers should treat the stock airplane and the converted airplane as essentially different aircraft.
Performance
Stock RC-3 performance is marginal by modern standards and frankly dangerous in hot-and-high conditions. Published figures — 103 mph cruise at 75%, 700 fpm sea-level climb, 12,000 ft service ceiling — assume sea level, standard day, and clean hull. Real-world numbers in warm weather at gross: expect 400–500 fpm climb off water, a stall speed only about 40 mph below cruise, and a service ceiling that collapses quickly with density altitude. Pilots describe stock SeaBees as "always flying at 75% power just to stay in the air," which is why the stock fuel burn is a stout 13.5 gph for 90-kt cruise.
The Franklin 6A8-215 is the other half of the performance story. Franklin Engine Company went out of business, parts are sourced from Poland (PZL) and a shrinking pool of specialists, TBO is only 1,000 hours, and overhaul cost now rivals a Lycoming IO-540 reman. Many stock airplanes on the market have tired, time-out engines being nursed along. This is the primary driver of the conversion market.
A Simuflight GO-480 or IO-540 conversion changes the airplane's character completely. Sea-level climb jumps to 1,000+ fpm, cruise moves into the 110–115 mph range, takeoff water run drops to around 980 ft at gross, and useful load increases via the 100-lb gross weight bump. Fuel burn rises to 18–22 gph, but the airplane actually has reserves of power for go-arounds, density altitude, and overgross glassy-water departures.
Payload & Range
Stock RC-3 at 3,150 lb gross, 2,190 lb empty, 960 lb useful load, 75 gal usable (450 lb fuel):
- Full fuel + 2 adults (400 lb): 110 lb remaining for baggage. 75 gal @ 13.5 gph with 45-min reserve → roughly 4.5 hr endurance, ~400 nm still-air range at 90 kt.
- 4 adults (720 lb) + 100 lb baggage: 140 lb (23 gal) fuel allowance. About 1.5 hr endurance, ~125 nm range. The airplane is not practical as a four-person cross-country machine.
- 3 adults (540 lb) + 60 lb baggage: 360 lb (60 gal) fuel. ~4 hr endurance, ~350 nm range. This is the realistic mission profile.
With a Simuflight IO-540 conversion and +100 lb gross weight STC (3,250 lb, ~1,060 lb useful load):
- Full fuel + 2 adults + baggage: An extra 100 lb of payload at similar endurance. Fuel burn rises to 18–20 gph cruise, so still-air range is actually slightly less than stock (~350 nm) despite the extra power; cruise is ~100 kt.
- 4 adults + usable baggage + 3-hour fuel: Genuinely feasible. This is the mission profile that justifies the conversion.
Water operations always penalize useful load further: glassy water and hot days require conservative fuel loads, and beach operations demand margin for overloaded departures. In practice most stock SeaBee owners fly with 50–60 gallons and 2–3 people; converted airplanes actually carry four.

Mission Suitability
- Backcountry / water access (8/10) — This is the SeaBee's reason for existing. It is a genuinely capable amphibian with excellent water handling, a dry cabin (pusher keeps spray off), and the ability to beach-taxi up onto sand or gravel via its wheels. It outperforms a Cub on floats in payload and weather protection and lands on runways a Cub can't reach. Converted airplanes score higher. See backcountry-bush.
- Local fun flying (9/10) — A near-perfect "fly to the lake and swim" airplane. Character, ramp presence, a huge cabin, and genuine amphibian capability. This is the single best use case. See local-fun-flying.
- Cross-country (4/10) — Stock airplanes are too slow, too thirsty, and too short-legged to be serious travelers (90 kt, 450 nm). Converted IO-540 birds are tolerable (95–100 kt, 500–550 nm) but still uncompetitive with a fixed-gear Cessna on a per-mile basis. Bought for the destinations — lakes — not the transit. - Cargo hauling (4/10) — 960 lb useful load on stock aircraft is respectable in absolute terms but modest once you add fuel and water operations (you fuel conservatively). Converted airplanes add ~100 lb. Cabin volume is excellent for bulky light cargo.
- Flight training (2/10) — Not a trainer. Complex, amphibian-rated, vintage systems, and a fragile airframe for student abuse.
- Business travel (3/10) — Too slow and too unreliable (stock Franklin) for schedule-driven travel. Viable only for owners flying between lake homes.
- Aerobatics (1/10) — No.
- Surveying (5/10) — Dry pusher cabin and good low-and-slow visibility through the big windshield make it workable for wildlife, fisheries, and shoreline surveys in water-access areas.
Avionics Ecosystem
The SeaBee is not certified for IFR as originally delivered and most airframes remain day-VFR. Panels run the full gamut:
- Survivor ($90–120k airplanes): original round gauges, single nav-com, no transponder or ADS-B, Franklin-era bus. Often needs avionics work before annual.
- Mid-tier restoration ($140–180k): single Garmin GTN 650Xi or GNC 215, GTX 335/345 transponder with ADS-B Out, basic attitude indicator, audio panel, intercom. Legal and practical for day VFR seaplane ops.
- Full modernization ($200–275k): Garmin G3X Touch or Dynon SkyView HDX (experimental exemption or STC), dual GPS, autopilot (rare but possible in converted airframes), engine monitor, 406 ELT. Almost always paired with a Simuflight conversion.

STCs & Modifications
Engine conversions are by far the most important modifications and dominate the price spread on the used market:
- Simuflight GO-480 / GSO-480 / IGSO-480 conversion (STC SA615NW / SA5684NM): Lycoming geared engine at 260–295 hp, new nacelle, new engine mount, modified front and rear spar and aft firewall, Hartzell HC-A2V20 / HC-A3V propeller. +100 lb gross (to 3,250). 1,500 fpm sea-level climb, ~980 ft water takeoff at gross. Typical install cost (engine + kit + labor) $85,000–$130,000 in 2025 dollars on a core airframe. This is the gold-standard conversion.
- IO-540 conversion (STC SA5652NM, marketed by TAC / Simuflight): 250–300 hp direct-drive Lycoming. Simpler and cheaper to overhaul than the geared engines, wider mechanic familiarity. Comparable performance. $70,000–$110,000 installed. The most common modern conversion on 2025 listings.
- Continental IO-470-P "Norwegian" conversion: 250 hp direct-drive Continental with reversible propeller (hugely valuable for water maneuvering and beach-docking). Never STC'd in the U.S. — airplanes running this conversion are in experimental-exhibition or operated outside the U.S. (Norway, Canada). Engine supply is limited.
- Gross weight increase STC: +100 lb (3,150 → 3,250) bundled with conversions.

Parts availability is rated fair and mechanic familiarity is specialist — this is not an airplane to own without access to a SeaBee shop or an A&P willing to learn.
- International Republic Seabee Owners Club (IRSOC, republicseabee.com): The nerve center of the community. Runs forums, maintenance bulletins, parts sources, O-ring and fuel pump kits, Electrol PowerPac overhaul procedures, event calendar. Membership effectively mandatory.
- Simuflight (Renton, WA): The primary specialty shop. Does conversions, restorations, airframe work, Electrol overhauls, and parts. Wait times for full restorations run 12–24 months.
- Essco Aircraft: Prints and sells the RC-3 Parts Catalog and manuals.
- Franklin engine support: PZL-Franklin in Poland manufactures new parts; U.S. overhauls through specialty shops only. Overhaul cost $40,000–$55,000 when parts are available.

The used SeaBee market is dominated by engine status. 2025 ranges (observed in Controller, Trade-a-Plane, and IRSOC listings):
- $90,000–$130,000: Stock Franklin-powered airplane, mid-time engine, day VFR panel, no significant corrosion. Decent flyer, needs nothing urgent.
- $130,000–$180,000: Nicely restored Franklin airplane with fresh paint/interior and modern avionics, OR an older Simuflight conversion on a mid-time engine.
- $180,000–$230,000: Recent Simuflight GO-480 or IO-540 conversion, modern avionics (GTN + G3X or equivalent), fresh paint, low-time engine, documented corrosion inspection.
- $230,000–$275,000+: Full-restoration Simuflight conversion with every upgrade (MT prop, LED lighting, full modern panel, autopilot, low-time everything). Rare.

ADs & Common Problems
- AD 47-21-16: Fuel strainer drain (applies to S/N 5–250). Early production issue, typically long-since complied with.
- AD 53-23-03: Severe corrosion of the upper and lower lift strut fittings and fuselage wing lift areas. Required 25-hour / 6-month recurring inspections with internal inspection holes per Republic Service Bulletin 25 Supplement 2. Still recurring on unconverted airframes and the single most important pre-buy inspection item.
- Hull corrosion: The airplane is a 1940s seaplane. Saltwater operation accelerates electrolytic and galvanic corrosion around rivets, the step, the keel, the bilge, and gear attach points. A pre-buy without a thorough hull inspection by a SeaBee specialist is malpractice.
- Electrol 430 PowerPac (hydraulic gear/flap system): Original unit. Overhauls are a specialty item and the IRSOC publishes a 29-page overhaul procedure. Seal failures are the most common in-service squawk.
- Franklin engine availability: TBO is 1,000 hours, cylinders, mags, and internal parts are specialty-sourced. Many stock airplanes run past TBO or on nursing. A time-out Franklin is the tipping point at which most owners either convert to Lycoming or sell.
- Fuel cell leakage: Original rubber bladder tanks fail with age. Refurbishing kits available via IRSOC.
- Door hinge and latch wear: Recurring squawk; kits available.
- Tail-cone corrosion and empennage skin cracks: Common on high-time airframes.
- Windshield crazing: Original flat glass/acrylic windshields delaminate; replacement panels available from specialty suppliers.
Pre-buy red flags: Franklin engine near or past TBO, unexplained recent paint (hiding corrosion), hull bilge water staining, sluggish gear cycling, log-book gaps during private-owner ownership, absence of a current AD 53-23-03 inspection.
Insurance Profile
The SeaBee is underwritten as a vintage amphibian, which is one of the more challenging categories in GA. Underwriters care about:
- Pilot hours in type and seaplane rating currency. A commercial ASES rating with 200+ seaplane hours and 25+ in the SeaBee is the sweet spot; below that, expect either declinations or sharp premium steps.
- Dual/checkout requirements. Most carriers require 10–25 hours of dual in type for low-time seaplane pilots.
- Operating environment. Freshwater-only gets better rates than saltwater operation. Some carriers decline saltwater use entirely on vintage hulls.
- Hull value. Typical 2025 premiums: $4,500–$6,000/yr on a $120,000 stock airplane with an experienced pilot; $7,000–$10,000/yr on a $200,000 converted airplane; $10,000–$15,000/yr on $250,000+ hulls or for lower-time pilots.
- Availability. Only a handful of markets write SeaBees: Avemco typically declines, so quotes come from Starr, Old Republic, and specialty seaplane brokers (e.g., Traverse, Falcon).
