Experience sets your insurance: a 2,000-hour pilot with recent training pays 30–40% less than a 200-hour owner, and student owners pay 20–40% more — on the same aircraft that is often a doubling. Location sets your hangar: a T-hangar runs $200–400 a month in the Midwest against $400–1,500 in a coastal metro, and an outside tie-down is less again. Engine reserves move too — a local shop reusing your serviceable cylinders can come in 30–50% under the national specialty-shop pricing we quote, though you trade the warranty and turnaround that comes with it. Reserves are money set aside toward a future overhaul, not a bill this year, and the annual inspection figure is the shop’s labor to look — whatever they find is separate.

Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. Annual inspection is the shop's labor to open and inspect — what they find is the maintenance line, which covers oil changes, plugs, tires, brakes, hoses, lights, a battery and vacuum pump amortised over their life, and the unscheduled squawks that are the largest and least predictable part of it. Reserves are sinking funds toward an overhaul, not a bill you pay this year — and note that a propeller is due on hours or calendar time, typically six years, so flying less does not put it off forever.

Overview

The Cirrus SR20, introduced in 1999, was the aircraft that launched a revolution in general aviation. It was the first certified production aircraft with a whole-airframe parachute system (CAPS — Cirrus Airframe Parachute System), all-composite construction, and a side-yoke control interface. Cirrus essentially redefined what a new GA aircraft could be.

The SR20 is the entry-level Cirrus — 215HP Continental IO-390 (G6+), fixed gear, and Garmin Perspective+ avionics as standard. It's used extensively by flight training organizations (notably ATP Flight School) and as a personal cross-country machine.

The SR20 has gone through seven generations (G1 through G7), with each adding performance, avionics, and safety improvements. The G6 (2017+) added the IO-390 engine with 215HP (up from 200HP) and increased useful load by 150 lbs. The G7 (2024+) brings further cockpit improvements modeled after the Vision Jet.

Total SR20 production exceeds 3,000 aircraft. The SR20 remains in production with a new base price of approximately $450,000.

Performance

The SR20 G6 cruises at 155 KTAS at 75% power — impressive for a fixed-gear airplane. The composite airframe produces significantly less drag than aluminum equivalents, and the speed pants on the fixed gear help further. The IO-390 provides better climb and cruise than the earlier IO-360 models.

Earlier G1/G2 models with the 200HP IO-360 cruise closer to 150 KTAS. The 15HP bump to the IO-390 is modest but the useful load increase of 150 lbs is significant.

The CAPS system adds approximately 50 lbs to empty weight and imposes a maximum deployment speed of 133 KIAS. This is not a limitation in normal operations but means CAPS is only available below certain speed/altitude combinations.

The SR20 handles differently from conventional GA aircraft due to the side-yoke control and spring-loaded trim. Pilots transitioning from conventional aircraft need 5-10 hours of dual instruction to adapt.

The SR20's 965 lbs useful load (G6) is adequate for two adults with full fuel and generous range. Four average adults with full fuel leaves almost no baggage allowance. The G6's 150 lb useful load increase over earlier generations makes a meaningful difference. Earlier G1-G5 models with ~815 lbs useful load are noticeably more weight-limited.

Mission Suitability

  • Flight Training (6): Widely used by ATP and other training organizations. The side-yoke, CAPS, and glass cockpit provide modern training experience. However, the high acquisition and operating costs make it expensive for primary training. Training-specific insurance is available but premium.
  • Backcountry (2): Fixed gear but low-wing. Speed pants vulnerable on unimproved surfaces. Not designed for backcountry.
  • Business Travel (6): Capable IFR platform but 155 KTAS and four seats limit its appeal for business travel compared to the SR22T.
  • Aerobatics (1): Not aerobatic certified. CAPS complicates any unusual attitudes.

Avionics Ecosystem

The SR20's avionics are standardized by generation:
