Overview

The Cessna 180 Skywagon is one of the most revered backcountry aircraft ever produced. First flown on May 26, 1952, and entering production for the 1953 model year, the 180 established itself as the definitive do-anything, go-anywhere four-to-six-seat single. A total of 6,193 Cessna 180s were manufactured between 1953 and 1981, and they remain among the most sought-after tailwheel aircraft on the used market.

The 180 was Cessna's first truly rugged utility airframe -- an all-metal, high-wing taildragger with spring steel gear, constant-speed propeller, and enough power and useful load to haul people and cargo into rough strips where tricycle-gear aircraft fear to tread. It is the lighter, more nimble sibling of the cessna-185-skywagon, trading 70 HP for roughly 150 fewer pounds of empty weight and noticeably more responsive handling. Many backcountry pilots who have flown both prefer the 180 for tight strips where agility matters more than raw hauling capacity.

The 180 enjoys a fanatical following in the backcountry community. Organizations like the Cessna 180/185 Club and Backcountry Pilot maintain active forums, fly-ins, and knowledge bases. In Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and anywhere else there are unimproved strips, modified 180s on tundra tires or floats are a daily sight. The 1964 (180H) transition to the wider 185-style fuselage is the most significant airframe change. Pre-1964 aircraft are lighter and sometimes preferred for their slightly sportier feel, but post-1964 models offer more cabin room and the option for a fifth and sixth seat.

Performance

The Cessna 180 is a legitimate STOL performer in stock configuration. A 620-foot ground roll at sea level on a standard day is respectable for a 2,800-pound gross weight aircraft, and many modified 180s with STOL kits and tundra tires can improve on those numbers substantially.

Real-world cruise is typically 130-137 KTAS at 75% power, burning 13 GPH. Economy cruise at 55% power brings fuel burn down to around 9.7 GPH at 12,000 feet with a TAS of approximately 120 knots. The 88-gallon fuel capacity gives outstanding endurance -- over 6 hours at economy settings with reserves.

Rate of climb of 1,100 FPM at sea level is strong, though expect significant degradation at density altitudes above 5,000 feet. With the 230 HP Continental, the 180 still performs credibly at mountain strip elevations of 5,000-7,000 feet, though it cannot match the brute-force climb of the 300 HP cessna-185-skywagon.

The spring steel gear is legendarily tough. Combined with the tailwheel configuration, the 180 handles rough, unimproved surfaces that would destroy a nosewheel aircraft. Crosswind capability is excellent for experienced tailwheel pilots.
