Overview

The Beechcraft Skipper Model 77 was Beechcraft's late-1970s attempt to enter the two-seat trainer market against the Cessna 152 and Piper Tomahawk. Introduced in 1979 with a distinctive T-tail configuration, only 312 Skippers were produced before production ended abruptly in 1981 when Beechcraft decided the low-margin trainer market wasn't worth pursuing.

The Skipper has a unique place in GA: it's a well-built Beechcraft that no one asked for. The T-tail design was fashionable in the late 1970s (Piper used it on the Tomahawk too) but added weight and complexity without clear benefit. The O-235 engine produces 115HP — adequate for a trainer but not exciting.

Today only about 118 Skippers remain active. Rarity makes parts sourcing challenging, and the small fleet means fewer mechanics have experience with the type. For a buyer specifically seeking a Beechcraft-quality trainer at budget prices, the Skipper delivers — but the parts availability concerns are real.

The Skipper is MOSAIC eligible (Vs1 55 KIAS, max gross 1,675 lbs), which may increase interest and values as the MOSAIC rule takes full effect.

Performance

The Skipper cruises at 105 KTAS — competitive with the Cessna 152 (107 KTAS) and Piper Tomahawk (100 KTAS). Climb rate of 720 FPM at gross is acceptable on cool days but drops significantly in hot weather; real-world reports indicate 500 FPM or less on warm summer days.

The T-tail means the horizontal stabilizer sits above the wing wake, which provides clean airflow in cruise but can create unexpected pitch behavior in slow flight. Stall characteristics are actually quite good — plenty of pre-stall buffet through the tail warns the pilot before the break. However, the elevator authority at very low speeds is reduced compared to conventional-tail designs.

The low wing provides better ground effect than high-wing trainers, which some students find makes landing easier. Others find the reduced visibility in turns a disadvantage during pattern work.

Mission Suitability

  • Flight Training (6): Designed as a trainer and adequate for the role. Good stall characteristics with advance warning through tail buffet. However, the T-tail pitch behavior in slow flight is unusual, parts availability is a real concern for fleet operators, and the tiny fleet means limited training ecosystem. The Cessna 152 and Piper Warrior are superior training platforms simply due to parts and maintenance support.
  • Backcountry (1): Low-wing, low-performance, not suitable.
