Experience sets your insurance: a 2,000-hour pilot with recent training pays 30–40% less than a 200-hour owner, and student owners pay 20–40% more — on the same aircraft that is often a doubling. Estimate, not a quote. Where a line shows a range, the total, per-hour and per-mile figures use its midpoint— insurance moves most with your experience and time in type, hangar with where you base the aircraft, so your own number could sit at either end. Annual inspection is the shop's labor to open and inspect — what they find is the maintenance line, which covers oil changes, plugs, tires, brakes, hoses, lights, a battery and vacuum pump amortised over their life, and the unscheduled squawks that are the largest and least predictable part of it. Reserves are sinking funds toward an overhaul, not a bill you pay this year — and note that a propeller is due on hours or calendar time, typically six years, so flying less does not put it off forever.

AutoGyro GmbH, headquartered in Hildesheim, Germany, is the world's largest gyroplane manufacturer by volume, building roughly 300 aircraft per year as of the mid-2010s and holding a commanding share of the global gyroplane market. The company produces three core civilian models that share a common rotor head, pre-rotator, and Rotax powerplant family but differ radically in cabin architecture: the open-tandem MTOsport (originally the MT-03), the enclosed-tandem Calidus, and the enclosed side-by-side Cavalon. All three are pusher-configuration autogyros with a semi-rigid teetering two-blade rotor, tractor-equivalent Rotax 912ULS (100 hp), Rotax 914 turbo (115 hp), or Rotax 915iS injected turbo (141 hp) options.
The MT-03 / MTOsport was the company's first mass-market success after AutoGyro's 2003 founding, and Wikipedia notes it became a "market leader" in the open-cockpit gyroplane segment; an MT-03 set a world gyroplane distance record of 1,263 km in Australia. The Calidus (introduced 2009) added an enclosed composite cockpit for weather protection while retaining tandem seating. Performance
Gyroplane performance diverges sharply from fixed-wing intuition. The Cavalon cruises at only 85–90 KTAS regardless of power setting because the rotor imposes a hard aerodynamic speed limit near 100 KIAS (Vne) — pushing harder just burns fuel without gaining speed. Fuel burn at cruise is a modest 5.0–5.5 GPH on the Rotax 912ULS/914, giving roughly 4+ hour endurance on the Cavalon's 23 US gal usable fuel and a still-air range near 400 NM.
Unlike helicopters, gyroplanes cannot hover, but they can fly at 20 kt or less into a headwind with full control authority, making them exceptional observation platforms. The Cavalon's rate of climb is solid at ~980 fpm solo, but degrades meaningfully at gross weight and altitude — the Rotax 914's turbo normalization recovers most of that at density altitude, and the 915iS option further improves hot-and-high numbers.
Takeoff rolls are remarkably short (300–400 ft with pre-rotator spin-up) and landing ground rolls are essentially zero — gyroplanes can perform "zero roll" landings at idle power into any headwind above ~10 kt. Service ceiling is limited by rotor tip Mach and engine breathing more than aerodynamics; 13,000 ft is realistic with the 914 turbo.
Crosswind capability is exceptional: gyroplanes can land in 30+ kt direct crosswinds because the rotor disk simply tilts, and there is no fixed wing to weathervane. This is one of the family's headline selling points.

- Flight training (5): Gyroplanes require a separate rotorcraft-gyroplane rating, so the Cavalon is not a general-purpose trainer — but AutoGyro USA's flight school network uses Cavalons and MTOsports as primary gyroplane trainers. Scores moderate as a specialty trainer, poor as an entry to fixed-wing or helicopter ratings.
- Backcountry (7): Short takeoff, near-zero landing roll, huge crosswind tolerance, and benign slow-flight make the Cavalon a surprise backcountry contender. Ground clearance and tire size are the limiting factors versus a Carbon Cub or Husky.

Avionics Ecosystem
Stock Cavalon panels typically ship with a Dynon SkyView or Garmin G3X Touch single-screen EFIS, Garmin GTR 200 comm, Garmin GTX 335 ADS-B out transponder, and a simple autopilot-ready config (though autopilots are rare in gyroplanes).
