Overview
The Smith DSA-1 Miniplane — DSA standing for "Darned Small Airplane" — is a single-seat, open-cockpit, staggered-wing sport biplane designed by Frank W. Smith in the mid-1950s for amateur construction. The prototype first flew on 29 October 1956 and immediately demonstrated what remains the airplane's defining trait: an exceptional power-to-weight ratio in a compact, honest package that simply feels like fun to fly.
Frank Smith died of a heart attack shortly after completing the prototype. His widow Dorothy and son Donald continued to market the plans through the 1960s and into the 1970s, and Donald at one point worked on a two-seat derivative known as the Miniplane +1. More than 300 Miniplanes have appeared on the U.S. civil register over the decades, and the type remains a cult favorite among homebuilders who want a real taildragger biplane without the cost or complexity of a pitts-s1 or marquart-charger. Plans are still available (most recently through Sky Classic Aircraft), and a steady trickle of new Miniplanes continues to appear at fly-ins decades after the last original plan set was sold.
The Miniplane occupies a specific niche: owners love it for short local flights, mild aerobatics, and the visceral experience of open-cockpit biplane flying, not for cross-country utility or instrument work. It is very much a Sunday afternoon airplane in the best sense of the term.

Performance
Book numbers on the Miniplane are deceiving in both directions. With an 85 hp Continental and a light airframe, climb performance is genuinely remarkable — the prototype reportedly hit 2,500 fpm solo — and typical well-built examples will see 1,500-1,800 fpm at gross. Cruise, however, is an honest 115-125 mph (100-108 KTAS) no matter what you hang on the nose; the draggy biplane configuration puts a hard ceiling on top speed regardless of horsepower. Adding an O-235 buys you climb and takeoff margin, not cruise.
Range is the Miniplane's biggest compromise. With a 17-gallon fuel tank and a 5-6 gph burn, practical legs are under 300 nm with reserves, and open-cockpit comfort makes anything over 90 minutes a character-building exercise. Density altitude hits the Miniplane less than you'd expect thanks to the light wing loading (about 10 lbs/sq ft), and it remains a willing performer from high-altitude airports where heavier biplanes struggle.
Handling is the draw. Airbum's Budd Davisson describes ailerons that are "quick and light" with "enough rudder for nine airplanes and enough elevator for two," and notes that the nose pivots on a point with no adverse yaw — you can fly it feet on the floor if you want to. Stalls are gentle by biplane standards. It is not a Pitts — rolls are leisurely at 60-70 degrees per second — but it will do loops, rolls, Immelmanns, hammerheads, and spins with authority appropriate to its power and weight.
Payload & Range
The Miniplane is a single-seat airplane with a 384 lb useful load, and the payload-range analysis is unusually simple:
- Full fuel + pilot: 17 gal = 102 lbs of fuel, leaving 282 lbs for pilot and gear. A 200 lb pilot with 30 lbs of soft baggage fits easily. Range at 5.5 gph with 45-minute reserve is approximately 250-280 nm no-wind.

- Heavy pilot reality: A 230 lb pilot with full fuel pushes useful load limits, and a 250 lb pilot in bulky cold-weather gear is effectively at gross before loading any baggage. The airplane was designed for 1960s-era 170-180 lb pilots.

ADs & Common Problems
Experimental Amateur-Built aircraft are not subject to FAA Airworthiness Directives in the certified sense. However, the type has well-known failure patterns and pre-buy red flags:
- Wood spar condition: The wing spars are spruce. Moisture intrusion, glue joint failure, and hidden rot from decades of outdoor storage are the single most important pre-buy concern. A thorough spar inspection is non-negotiable on any Miniplane over 20 years old.
- Fabric condition: Ceconite or Poly-Fiber covering has a practical life of 20-30 years depending on storage. A punch test and UV inspection are essential.
