Overview
The Piper PA-32R is the retractable-gear version of the PA-32 family, produced from 1976 through 2009 under several names: Lance, Lance II, and Saratoga. It is one of the most capable six-seat, single-engine airplanes ever produced -- a fast, roomy, long-legged cross-country machine that carries big loads over serious distances.
The lineage begins with the PA-32R-300 Lance (1976-1978), which was essentially a Cherokee Six 300 fitted with retractable gear. In 1978, Piper introduced the controversial T-tail on the PA-32RT-300 Lance II and the turbocharged PA-32RT-300T Turbo Lance II. The T-tail improved cruise speed slightly but degraded slow-speed handling and pitch authority, earning a mixed reputation among pilots.
In 1980, Piper dropped the T-tail and returned to a conventional tail with the PA-32R-301 Saratoga SP, which became the definitive model. The Saratoga SP and later Saratoga II HP (2002-2009) refined the design with improved systems, better interiors, and eventually Avidyne Entegra glass avionics on late-production aircraft. A turbocharged variant, the PA-32R-301T Turbo Saratoga, was offered throughout the production run.
Production ended in 2009 with the final Saratoga II HP and Saratoga II TC models, after a total run of approximately 3,000 retractable PA-32R airframes. The type remains popular on the used market as a capable, if complex, cross-country traveler that seats six adults in genuine comfort at 155+ knots.

Notes on variant selection:
- Avoid T-tail Lance IIs unless you are experienced with the type. The T-tail reduces pitch authority at low speeds, making power-on stalls and go-arounds more demanding. Several fatal accidents have been attributed to T-tail handling issues.
- The PA-32R-301 Saratoga SP (1980+) is widely considered the best value in the line. It has the conventional tail, improved gear system, and 102-gallon fuel capacity.
- Late Saratoga II HP/TC models (2002-2009) with Avidyne glass command a significant premium but offer a near-modern cockpit experience.

Performance
The PA-32R-301 Saratoga SP cruises at 158 KTAS at 75% power, burning approximately 18 GPH. At a more economical 65% power setting, expect 150 KTAS on 16 GPH. The turbocharged models cruise at 170-177 KTAS at altitude while burning 19-20 GPH, though at lower altitudes they offer only 2-3 knots more than the normally aspirated version on similar fuel.
The retractable gear adds approximately 10-12 knots over the fixed-gear Cherokee Six, which is the primary reason for the added complexity. Over a 500 nm trip, that speed advantage saves 15-20 minutes.
Rate of climb at max gross is 1,010 FPM for the normally aspirated Saratoga and around 1,050 FPM for the turbocharged version at sea level. The turbo's real advantage is at altitude: it maintains 500+ FPM climb at 15,000 feet where the normally aspirated version is struggling.
