Overview
The Beechcraft Musketeer/Sundowner/Sierra family (BE-19/23/24) was Beechcraft's answer to the Cessna 172 and Piper Cherokee — an entry-level four-seat aircraft designed to bring new buyers into the Beechcraft fold with hopes they'd eventually step up to a Bonanza or Baron.
Introduced in 1963 as the Musketeer, the line went through several name changes and variants. The C23 Sundowner (1971-1983) with its 180HP O-360 engine is the most common and most representative variant. The Sierra C24R added retractable gear and 200HP for complex training capability.
These are solid, honest airplanes — well-built with Beechcraft quality, comfortable cabins, and docile handling. They're not exciting: the Sundowner cruises at a modest 118 KTAS and climbs at under 800 FPM at gross weight. But they're reliable, comfortable, and affordable to operate.
Total Musketeer-family production exceeded 4,400 aircraft across all variants.

Performance
The Sundowner C23 cruises at 118 KTAS at 75% power — honest but unspectacular. This puts it roughly on par with a Cessna 172 but behind a Piper Archer (128 KTAS) and well behind a Mooney M20C (140 KTAS). Economy cruise at 65% drops to 115 KTAS on 8 GPH, giving decent fuel efficiency.
The Sierra C24R picks up speed with retractable gear and 200HP: 137 KTAS cruise at 75% power, more competitive with the Piper Arrow and Cessna 172RG. Climb rate improves to 862 FPM.
The Sundowner's low wing provides a more solid ride in turbulence than high-wing competitors. The cabin is wider than a Cherokee 140 and comparable to an Archer. The entry-level Musketeer/Sport models with 150HP feel distinctly underpowered, especially on hot days.

The Sundowner's useful load of 908 lbs is decent, but four adults with full fuel pushes close to or exceeds gross weight depending on individual weights and equipment. Two adults with full fuel provides comfortable margin and good range. The Sierra's higher gross weight (2,750 lbs) provides better payload-range flexibility.

Mission Suitability
- Flight Training (7): The Sundowner makes a good primary trainer — docile handling, good visibility over the nose, comfortable cockpit, and reasonable operating costs. The Sport 150 was specifically designed as a trainer. The Sierra serves as a complex trainer alternative to the Arrow and 172RG.
- Backcountry (2): Low-wing with modest performance. Not suitable for unimproved strips.
- Business Travel (3): Too slow for serious business use. 118 KTAS doesn't compete for time-sensitive travel.
- Aerobatics (1): Not aerobatic certified. Normal category only.
- Cross-Country (5): Adequate for moderate-distance trips. 508 nm range is acceptable. The Sierra at 137 KTAS is more practical for cross-country work.
- Cargo Hauling (3): Four-seat cabin with limited baggage. Not a hauler.
- Local Fun Flying (6): Pleasant to fly, good visibility, comfortable cabin. Not thrilling but enjoyable for weekend flying.

Most Musketeer/Sundowner panels are basic:
- Typical ($5K-$15K): Single nav/com (King KX-155 or Garmin GNS 430W), basic autopilot or wing leveler, ADS-B transponder. Many still fly with largely original equipment.
- Upgraded ($15K-$40K): Garmin GTN 650Xi, Garmin G5 for AI/DG, GTX 345 ADS-B. A reasonable upgrade for IFR-capable Sundowner.
- Full upgrade ($40K-$60K): Rarely justified economically on a $75,000 aircraft, but some owners invest in GTN 750Xi and G500 TXi.
Panel space is adequate but not generous. The instrument panel layout is functional but can be challenging for extensive avionics upgrades.
