Overview

The Pitts Special is the most iconic aerobatic airplane ever built. Designed by Curtis Pitts beginning in 1943-44, this compact biplane has dominated aerobatic competition for decades — the US Aerobatic Teams of 1970 and 1972 won world team championships flying Pitts S-1S aircraft almost exclusively. The design has been refined continuously for over 80 years and remains in production today.

The Pitts comes in two fundamental configurations: the S-1 single-seat series (homebuilt and certified) and the S-2 two-seat series (certified only). The S-1 is available as plans-built or kit-built homebuilt aircraft through Steen Aero Lab; the S-2 two-seat certified models are manufactured by Aviat Aircraft in Afton, Wyoming. The S-2C is the current production model.

The Pitts is certified for unlimited aerobatics at +6G/-5G (S-2C) — among the highest G-limits of any certified production aircraft. It is the standard by which other aerobatic aircraft are judged.

Total certified Pitts production exceeds 700 aircraft (S-1S: 61, S-1T: 64, S-2A: 455, S-2S: 17, S-2B: 196, plus S-2C ongoing). Thousands of homebuilt S-1 variants have been constructed from plans.

Performance

The S-2C's 2,900 FPM climb rate with 260HP and only 1,625 lbs gross weight gives it a power-to-weight ratio that makes vertical performance effortless — the aircraft will climb vertically until airspeed bleeds to zero, enabling unlimited vertical aerobatic figures.

The Pitts has no flaps — the stall speed of 54 KIAS is the same clean and dirty. This simplifies operations but means approach speeds are higher than typical trainers (70-80 KIAS final approach). The lack of flaps combined with the biplane's high drag allows steep approach angles when slipped.

The 150 KTAS cruise speed on 14 GPH with only 28 gallons fuel gives a modest 277 nm range — the Pitts is not a cross-country airplane. The fuel system is designed for inverted flight with a fuel injection system that maintains fuel flow in any attitude.

The Pitts is notorious for its difficult ground handling and poor forward visibility during taxi and landing. The short coupled tailwheel design, combined with the biplane's limited forward view over the cowling, makes landings one of the most demanding tasks in GA. Ground loops on landing are the most common accident cause.

The Pitts is weight-limited for two larger adults. The 475 lbs useful load with 168 lbs of fuel leaves 307 lbs for occupants — two 150-lb pilots with no baggage. Heavier pilots must reduce fuel. Solo aerobatic flying with full fuel provides adequate range for a local aerobatic session (1.5-2 hours at aerobatic power settings). The Pitts is not designed for payload utility — it exists to do aerobatics.
